Sci-Fi Dan Trachtenberg to direct Predator film ‘Badlands’

Yes. And no.

You’re killing me here.

Yes, a Predator movie will have a theatrical. I’ll tell you very simply. After Prey became a success, Dan [Trachtenberg] came back and said he didn’t want to do Prey 2. And we’re like, “What do you want to do?” And he rattled off a bunch of ideas that were really crazy but really cool. We’ve actually done two of them. Two are coming out next year. One I can’t talk about yet, but the other one is the live-action Predator film with Elle Fanning that just wrapped in New Zealand. That’ll be out theatrically sometime next year.

Wait, so there's second one and it's not Prey 2? Colour me intrigued.

Doesn’t sound like it’s a full length movie if he had time to film it while prepping Badlands too IMG_4320.jpeg

The Predator franchise has, over the years, given us all kinds of heroes. We got Arnie’s rippling muscles in the original; Danny Glover’s LA cop in the sequel; a gaggle of reprobates in Predators; and, most recently, Amber Midthunder’s Comanche warrior Naru in Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey. But for his next Predatorouting, Trachtenberg has something very different planned. 2025 will see the release of Predator: Badlands (as well as another film in the franchise that he shot simultaneously in secret), which isn’t exactly a follow-up to Prey but a future-set tale taking place on an alien planet. And, most importantly, it brings a very different kind of Predator protagonist: the Predator itself.

“The creature is front and centre, leading the charge,” Trachtenberg grins, speaking to Empire in the Andor Season 2 issue. “He’s still badass, but there’s something there that touches you emotionally, too. Creating a character you connect with, but are also super-intimidated by, has been challenging. But exciting.” The idea, he says, came from a desire to “find another essential piece of cinema that does what Prey did spiritually — pushing the franchise’s boundaries, letting us root for a hero we rarely get to root for — but in a different way. And that transformed into this big idea of rooting for the Predator.” Finally, the ugly mother-effer’s day has come.

While audiences will be asked to empathise with Badlands’ dreadlocked hunter, there will be humans in the mix too – notably Elle Fanning, who will play more than one character. “She faced intense challenges on this movie — dramatically, physically, logistically,” Trachtenberg teases. A Predator lead and multiple Elle Fannings? Get us to the chopper, asap!

Wont be surprised if this turns out to be a movie about one Predator marooned in a world filled with Xenomorphs 🤔

A hero Predator if it works is a great lead in for another Alien Vs Predator movie.
Yeah. The problem with AvP 2004 was that the titular characters basically amounted to bruisers and cannon fodder, most of the humans were basically forgettable, and the plot was pretty aimless and just kind of there. The movie doesn’t really know who it wants you to root for, so the experience feels kind of fun but also a little meandering and tedious.

Having the Predator be the protagonist in a potential AvP film already solves most of the issues and removes a lot of the pitfalls the previous attempt fell into, because it gives you an emotional anchor, someone to follow and root for, want to see succeed and make it out of the film alive.

Yep. And we already know Trachtenberg can create compelling human characters along the way. I am really looking forward to Badlands.

Already was excited for this after Prey, but now I can not wait to see it with a Predator as a protagonist. I love that Trachtenberg clearly loves this franchise and is actually doing something new and original with it, and I really hope it leads to a new AvP movie that doesn’t suck.

The 2025 preview issue of Empire has now been released, and though the snippet doesn’t include any new images, it does contain some intriguing tidbits including that Predator: Badlands will take place on another world!

Director Dan Trachtenberg also spoke on the film’s tone in comparison to Prey.

“Prey tapped into that adventure-move spirit, but this goes further. There’s more ‘fun’ and ‘funny’ in it, but it’s way darker than Prey, too.”
When asked if he felt any pressure following up his critically acclaimed 2022 film Prey, Trachtenberg expressed confidence.

“That’s one thing I’m not scared of, because I know audiences are driven by new experiences. And this [Movie] is a brand -new experience.”

I prefer the Predators as monster heels but this sounds intriguing, just didn't realise Elle Fanning was in it.

Honestly, making the Predator basically the protagonist of this film is probably one of the more novel ideas this franchise has had and I can’t believe nobody ever thought of it sooner. Like, of course, it’s so obvious it seems like a no-brainer.
