Dark Knight: Boy Wonder

I just finished reading the All Star. I like the the way Vicki was used again and I like how Batman says "I'm the goddamn Batman" LOL. Looking forward to Dark Knight: Boy Wonder

So, what the hell is happening with this? Has it been cancelled?

God knows. My guess is that neither Lee nor Miller really need the work, and they're at that stage in their career where deadlines don't matter. It's evident that they aren't passionate about the story, or finishing it for that matter.

No, they've both shown they are passionate about the story, and finishing it for that matter. On moebiusgraphics.com Frank Miller called the story "a seminal journey for Dick Grayson, and for Batman himself" and said he was very glad to hear from Jim Lee that Jim was getting caught up on the art so the series will get back on track.

"Thanks to all for your curiosity regarding ASB&R--which I prefer to call ROBIN, because that's who it's about.

ROBIN seems to be back on track, via Wildstorm. Jim's keeping me informed. I'm very glad to report this, since the story involves a seminal journey for Dick Grayson, and for Batman himself.

By the way, Jim's delays on the project have nothing to do a lack of diligence. He's an industrious man. Let's give him time: it'll be worth it.

FM"

Also Jim Lee himself explained that the delays "had nothing to do with Frank. He's been a prince through this entire process, and I've never had to wait on him. I was swamped with several projects at the same time that went longer than anticipated. I was continually playing catch up. Frank told me in our last meeting that I need to stop, take a deep breath, collect myself and set a realistic date where we could come back out on a regular basis, and that's what we decided to do."

They decided to officially name the rest of the series Dark Knight: Boy Wonder to make it clear to fans that this story is not set in a All-Star Universe but is actually set in the Dark Knight Universe continuity, taking place in-between Year One and Dark Knight Returns.

Here's a video of Jim Lee talking about the series to Newsrama -

Larry Fire talked to Jim Lee at his Icons book signing and reported that although Dark Knight: Boy Wonder did not appear in February as originally announced, Jim Lee assured him that it would be a 2011 title.

Obviously finishing the art on the remaining issues has taken Jim Lee longer than he thought it would, they are holding off on soliciting any issues of it because he is insistent that the rest of the series ships on a regular basis, monthly.

Sorry. Talk is cheap, mate. Years of delay doesnt equal passionate about finishing it. Not to me, anyway.

Frank Miller wrote the upcoming issues, Jim Lee never had to wait on him. Jim Lee has other commitments which have slowed him down. His position as Executive Creative Director designing the massive DC Universe Online game for Sony and Warner took up a lot of his time from 2006 to 2009. His new position as Co-Publisher of DC takes up a lot of his time now. Doesn't mean he's not passionate about Dark Knight: Boy Wonder and working on it. I'd rather he take his time and produce highly detailed art instead of rushing it and losing that attention to detail. I'd rather wait for the remaining issues to come out monthly instead of having long delays between each issue.

Good to know it's Jim Lee's fault. Excuses, excuses. ;)

jim lee should be more responsible with his commitments. he shouldnt be accepting so many projects if he can't give them the necessary time and attention.

I agree. Jim Lee took on too many projects at the same time. He shouldn't have taken on the job of Executive Creative Director designing the DC Universe Online game in 2006 while he was committed to illustrating All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder written by Frank Miller and at the same time he took on the job of illustrating 7 alternative covers for Geoff Johns' Infinite Crisis and at the same time he was also committed to illustrating WildC.A.T.S. written by Grant Morrison and only one issue of that project was ever finished and released.
In 2008 Grant said, "WildC.A.T.S. is happening! We're just waiting on Jim [Lee]." He pointed out that Jim is popular and busy, and that WildC.A.T.S. doesn't necessarily take first priority.

Agreed. Its a shame that the only incident where lee was on time this past decade was during hush, and that was because there was a bet to see if lee could get every issue done on time

I bet Miller couild pencil the remaining 6 issues before Lee gets off his arse. :funny:

If you're a fan of Miller's art you can check out this year his upcoming Xerxes and Holy Terror.

Uh, I 'm so sick of this psycho portrayal of Bats by Miller, and reading nearly in every panel the word "Godamn" "Shut up" etc. Oh and that Hooker and Lesbian angles in every DC Hero woman are really retarted. I read some issues back and dropped it shortly. This whole Anti hero - retarted dialogue in recent comics (see Millar also)makes me wanna vomit.

Sick of it? It's not like the comics world has been bombarded by it. There's heaps more of the "standard" Batman stuff out there for sale allowing you to perfectly ignore Miller's stuff. You're like those parents that complain about violent video games and violent movies... If you don't like it, just don't buy it! :whatever:

The story displays the reasons that Batman needs a Robin, that he needs a restraining figure. Batman's extremely brutal, ruthless and reckless behavior in the first half of the series displays this need for a restraining figure. It follows the established path of Batman mythology for Robin to humanize Batman, and take him from solitarily obsessed vigilante to a father figure. Robin’s whole existence has always been to contrast and temper Batman’s darkness. It makes sense for Robin to humanize Batman, pull him back from the brink. Frank Miller explained "Originally, my feeling was much like many other people's - I had always thought that Robin was a real pain-in-the-ass, but I now realize what a brilliant creation it was, because it really does give a human context to Batman's character. If Batman is done properly, he's such a powerhouse that he needs a restraining figure - and just a human being to be with him, especially a brightly-colored child, as perverse an idea as it is that a grown man would drag a child into the bullets! But it works very well. I think that back when they introduced Robin to the Batman series it was a very good move, and it's had something to do with the character's staying power. I love the "Boy Wonder" line, before he was turned into the "Teen Wonder," and almost a "Grim Robin." But I just love the idea of a young Robin. That's why I created Carrie Kelley in Dark Knight - I just loved the contrast between this stocky, tough, dark adult, and a colorful little pixie running around. I found that introducing Robin completes Batman as a character." As Frank Miller stated, this story is "a seminal journey for Dick Grayson, and for Batman himself." None of the women in All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder/Dark Knight: Boy Wonder are hookers and lesbians. Student/crime fighter Batgirl, house wife/mother Barbara Gordon, reporter Vicki Vale, thief Catwoman, crime fighter Black Canary, crime fighter/Justice Leaguer Wonder Woman, Attorney Donna Gugina and Neo-Nazi Bruno are not hookers or lesbians.

Um, i know there are diferent stories too except Miller's. I just said i don't like his take and it's not the violence he puts that i disagree. It's the over the top and cliched ways he presents all the elements of the story that i am sick of and think don't suit Batman at all. Just give me the Bill Finger version any day. At least the times then were more apropriate for cheese and over the top characters like Miller does today.

Over the top elements have been a part of Batman from the beginning. The Bill Finger version of Robin's origin has Boss Zucco as an over the top, cliched caricature of Edward G. Robinson's Little Caesar saying "I'm the boss of this town, see! Nobody can do that to me, see! I'm still Boss Zucco, see!" The times today are just as appropriate for over the top characters.

I actually like Miller's take as another offering... I also like Alan Moore's Batman, Paul Dini/Bruce Timm's Batman and Jim Lee's Batman... but it's nice to get different takes on a character we love. I think having Miller's "over the top" Batman is fun. In the very least, you can laugh at it.

You didn't actually, but of course it's your opinion, who else's is it gonna be? ;)

Its not Jims Fault he doesnt want to devote his precious time to Franks insane ramblings. Maybe if he had an idea where he was going with the story Jim would be more anxious and excited to draw it.

My 2 cents :o

Have you missed the last few threads in this topic? It seems that the story is done and Jim is the one we're all waiting on...
