Holy smokes! A recent SciFi.com interviewed revealed that Doug Jones's voice wasn't used in the 1st Hellboy film. It was an uncredited David Hyde Pierce! Whoa! :wow:

That's correct. Doug went into the job knowing that his voice might not be used but requested that he at least be considered for it. In the end it was down to Doug and DHP's voices and the suits wanted the more well known name to throw around. DHP, being the prince of a guy that he is, refused credit for a role that he truly felt was Doug's.

>^^<

But DHP wasn't credited. How would the audience have known?

David asked not to be credited, and he refused to do any press or attend the premieres, screenings etc. He is one of the most generous and nicest guys in the business to do that, as he felt - quite rightly - that Abe was Doug's creation. The unfortunate thing was a lot of people recognised David's rather distinctive voice, and were either confused by Doug's name being attached to the character or thought David actually PLAYED Abe, would you believe. Some of the crazy questions I was being asked about it were unreal.

Still, all is well now as Dougie is playing ALL of Abe - voice, body ... da woiks. :D

It's really nice David Hyde Pierce didn't take credit for the performance as so much of it was owed to Doug Jones, but I still wish they'd re-hire him for the sequel. It's been established THAT is Abe's voice (I thought it was perfect!)... so unless Doug Jones' voice is quite like DHP's, I think I'll be dissapointed. :(

Well, Doug has voiced Abe in the two HB Animated films and done a fantastic job - people have accepted it with great relish, and although his voice is different, it is still calm, educated and very distinctive. It is deeper, granted, but he has created a voice that actually David had to mimic in the first place. I love Doug's voice as Abe - and as much as I adore David Hyde Pierce (the man is a genius) I think Doug should be all of the character he worked so hard to create. And anyway, it's only a voice - they change actors for roles all the time - think James Bond! :D
