Does anyone find it odd that Doug Jones is oing the Voice of Abe Sabien in the upcoming Hellboy Animated ventures?

Sure he played Abe Sapien in the Movie, but he has voiced in the film by David Hyde Pierce (though Uncredited)

as of yet DHP is not attatched to the Live Action Sequel so maybe they will be having Jones provide his own voice this time around in which case I wonder why Jones didn't voice Sapien in the first place.....Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks

And why is it that who ever voiced Abe (Apparently it wasn't all Jones) tried really hard to impersonate DHP....And DHP actually did a voice in The Amazing Screw-On Head....Now why woulnd't he just do Helllboy as well.

This whole thing is causing me to lose sleep....well not really but it's picking at me a bit.

Jones is going to provide Abe's voice in the sequel. (DHP didn't find it fitting for his voice to take precident over Jones acting, or so I've heard.)

Oh...that's kinda cool.....Then Hopefully Jones get's to voice Silver Surfer too....I can see how it's insulting for the actor to have his voice done my someone else.....though Prowse would have sucked as Vader's Voice.

Ok, the story of DHP and Doug Jones and the voice of Abe.

When Doug took the job to play Abe he knew from the get go that he may not be the one doing the voice. Even thought Doug knew that he may not be the voice of Abe, he asked that he be considered and from what I understand, did an excelent job doing both voice and body of Abe. In the end though, The Suits wanted a big name associated with the movie that they could throw around to get people's attention hence the reason why they had DHP do Abe's voice. However, since DHP considered Abe to be Doug's creation, he refused to take credit for the part since he didn't want his more known name to outshine Doug's. DHP is a prince of a guy and those of us who are big Dougie fans could just give the man a big squeeze.

Now for the story of animated Abe and his voice.

When they were first working on Sword of Storms, they had asked DHP to do the voice, but since at that point Abe's part was just a little guest part, he wasn't interested. They then tried to get another actor to do the voice, but he ended up trying to sound DHP when he played Niles. They weren't really happy with how it came out (I heard the guy's voice at SDCC and I have to agree that the voice just didn't fit) so Ron Perlman, in his oh so subtle way escentally said, 'Cut the crap, just have Doug Jones do the voice.' And that's pretty much how Doug ended up doing the voice of animated Abe.

Doug will be providing the body and voice of Abe in Hellboy 2 and I for one am very excited about it.

Let me give further clarification because there's still some stuff that's been propagated incorrectly.

Doug did not get chosen to do the voice in the first film because at the time, he simply didn't do as good a job as David. Guillermo had always heard Hyde Pierce' voice in his head when he cast Abe's voice so there you go. It may have had some to do with the studio, but it wasn't a choice that Guillermo disagreed with. He always preferred David's performance better.

Fast foward to the animated show and David actually recorded some audio for the first movie, but as said.. he dropped out seemingly at the last minute because (its not clear in actuality, but this is the productions line), because there wasn't enough in the role for him. At the time he really didn't have any lines so, it's understandable. The rest about Doug coming on because Ron Perlman suggested him, that's true...and so on.

Anyway, I really like Doug's voice in the animated show. It's a much better reading than he did on the live action film. I can definately see why he's being cast in the sequel. Good for him and good luck.

Doug did an excellent job at his looping session for Abe in the first film - and that's from Guillermo himself. And it has never been denied that G had DHP in his head right from the start. GdT and I discussed this at length (and very candidly) two years ago, and he asked Doug to do a mid-Atlantic Niles Crane type of voice, which he did. He just wasn't DHP, and the Suits (and ultimately Guillermo) decided to go with David. And that is the only reason.

Doug voiced ALL of Abe on HB ANIMATED: SWORD OF STORMS. When David turned the job down, the production team found a voice actor to replace him and asked the poor soul to try and imitate DHP. Baaaaad move. Sounded terrible. Doug went into the ADR session and the voice you hear is the one he created for Abe three years ago, and is entirely his. He didn't try and imitate anyone - he did his own thing, as he should. And a great job he did of it too. :D

He will, incidentally, be voicing Abe in the HELLBOY video game alongside Ron.

Doug would certainly be my choice - he's very passionate about the character and has a voice that works for the Surfer, believe me. ;)
