David O. Russell's "Joy" (Jennifer Lawrence)

I love me some Jennifer Lawrence, but I'm not going to watch it cause of Russell. The reviews are also compelling me not to.

The reviews those and others are basically saying Jen is good but the movie overall isn't as good as most thought it would be. She basically got the best out of what she was given and that's all you can do as an actor.

But as I say go see it if you were interested in it before and don't just follow what they're saying.

I'm not following what they're saying. I wasn't going to see it cause David O. Russell is a horrible human being. The reviews seem to justify my decision to not see it because of him. (the film is not as good as it could be, but Jen-Law is)

Basically yeah.:funny:

Amy Adams and Christian Bale must be laughing their ass off. :funny:

It's sad to hear Jennifer Lawrence developing some weird Oscar dependence on him. She don't need him to get a nomination.

Seems like the biggest issue with this one is they rushed the heck out of it. It needed more time to be edited but of course DOR they wanted it out NOW because OSCAHS!!!1111.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting tired of David O. Russell's ****.

I sure am.

Lawrence will fade away into obscurity in the coming years. She'll be in a supporting cast for some franchise like X-Men. She'll beg them to bring her back. Or she'll go the way of Kate Winslet and do a Divergent type of movie in 10 years.

People who throw around phrases like "The Next Meryl Streep" so confidently don't seem to look back on history. Shyamalan was "The Next Spielberg". Shia LeBeowulf was "The Next Tom Hanks".

Shea about to direct, so maybe she's fine with it.

I'm over Lawrence. I can appreciate her candor on some things, but other times she just annoys the heck out of me. And frankly she's just too young to play these parts. I couldn't buy her as a single mom in SLP nor as Bale's wife in Hustle.

She wasn't a single mom in SLP, but I completely agree that she was too young for those roles. Not to say she wasn't good in them.

Her problem is that it's all gonna be "been there, done that" when she actually gets to be the appropriate age to be cast as such characters. Back when she was promoting Into The Woods Meryl Streep spoke about choosing age appropriate roles and how it has helped with her longevity, I think JLaw could stand to learn a thing or two from Meryl in that regard.

If Lawrence fades into obscurity, I hate Hollywood, because the woman is as talented as her Oscar record says she is. On screen, she is as authentic as they come.

She should apologize for taking roles that have earned her an Oscar? Did people really complain about her in SLP? American Hustle? When did it get cool to complain about those performances from Lawrence?

Surprised this isn't getting so much acclaim. Not disappointed though.

Where did I say she should apologize? Matter of fact where did I attack her at all? I'm noting that she may have a problem with longevity if she keeps playing in roles that are much older than her actual age. And I don't know about SLP but there were many people that noted how she seemed too young for her role in AH (and now Joy)and how that had an effect on her believability.

And I don't understand how she is going to have a problem with longevity when we are talking about roles that have earned her legit awards. Saying she was too young looking has become fashionable with these roles as she has become more tiresome in public with the general public.

Yeah, I'm surprised too, but not gonna lie, I can't decide whether I want to view it as karma for Russell's general horribleness as a person, or divine intervention coming to break Jen free of his hold over her. :oldrazz:

Let's go with both. :oldrazz: Despite my gripes over some things Lawrence has said, she's still good on screen but I feel her performances in his films, while highly praised, aren't really anything special. And I'd be lying if I said Russell being an abominable human being didn't make this somewhat sweet to see. :o

Shes 25 playing roles that should be given to women in their 30s and 40s. It doesn't matter the acclaim all that matters is that if she keeps playing roles meant for older women when she finally gets to be that age it could be very "been there, done that" from her potentially causing no excitement and if the public isn't excited about your movie it won't do well, and if her movies aren't doing well, eventually, she will stop being offered roles. Had Meryl played a witch when she was younger would it be as exciting and new to see her play a witch again in "Into The Woods"?

Oh and the "too young" comments are very valid regardless of if you agree or not.

I highly doubt Lawrence will fade away into obscurity. She is the biggest movie star in the world and with more mainstream fare than Joy lined up for the next few years--a sci-fi movie with Chris Pratt, a Steven Spielberg drama, and an Amy Schemer comedy--I don't see her star fading anytime soon.

You mention Kate Winslet, but Winslet is generally considered one of the best actresses of the last 20 years. Yes, she never was bigger than in her Titanic fame, but she followed that up with movies like Eternal Sunshine, Quills, Finding Neverland, The Reader, Revolutionary Road, Mildred Pierce.

Her doing Divergent for a paycheck unfortunately says more about the industry and our culture than her since she is over 40 and is being pushed into those supporting, antagonistic roles. That is a long time off for Lawrence, who will hopefully buck such a trend.

I'm glad this movie isn't anything. Maybe Jennifer Lawrence can stop starring in David O. Russell films now. Go out there and do something different.

They would be valid if she didn't receive acclaim for the roles. This is acting. She made enough people believe her in the roles that she got an Oscar and another nomination. It is bizarre to even suggest that because she is playing a 30-something year old, that it will become stale. Are there only certain types of roles you can play in your 30 and 40s year old actresses?

Also, am I to believe that if Emma Watson in 20 years played another "witch" people wouldn't be excited about it? I think it would be the exact opposite.

I should have never read those stories about him. Has put a stain on some of my favorite movies.
