DC Co-Publishers Announce End of Wild Storm and Zuda Imprint

Uh, why? So they can sit in DC's main publishing office not being used instead? They've already said there's no plans for any of the characters they brought back. And not to mention they canceled Madame Xanadu and, I suspect, maybe even Unknown Solider because of that. So, yeah, now even those characters that weren't being used by DC, and probably won't ever be used to any real significant extent there, and were being used by Vertigo can now not be used just as much as the other characters they recalled. And, of course, then there's the whole contradiction of not taking Constantine, a character that started in the DCU as well, and shows how dumb the whole thing really is. There's a reason Vertigo had these characters, and that's because DC didn't give two ****s about them and would never use them outside some occasion guest spot or one-shot that went nowhere. It's the perfect example of mucking around with something just for the sake of doing so, and that kind of stuff leads to bad places.

There are rumors that Swamp Thing is going to be used in Brightest Day with the whole Star City forest story going on. And honestly, if DC gives it a chance, I think a new Unknown Soldier book under the DC imprint could be a new Jonah Hex, R.E.B.E.L.S., and Doom Patrol.

As for Hellblazer, the reason for that is probably because his book has been going on for a really long time.

And if DC wanted individual characters, they could have just done that. If they wanted Swamp Thing to not use in their office instead of not being used in Vertigo's, they could have just taken him. They've done it before with stuff like Doom Patrol, Animal Man and Kid Eternity before, and this proves recalling characters isn't hard for them.

Personally, I think that Vertigo just might be better off without DC characters and simply use it to focus on creator driven works like Busiek's Astro City, Simone's Welcome to Tranquility, Aaron's Scalped, Snyder's American Vampire, Lemiere's Sweet Tooth, and get BKV back to do more work.

I find nothing wrong with them looking at Vertigo writers and offering them work and so-and-so, but I'm not fond of the idea of DC editorial directly going through Vertigo editorial specifically to farm their talent. I prefer Vertigo to stay the more art-inclined, indie like imprint

The two go hand in hand. Vertigo can stay indie like while DC uses it to farm for talent. And like I said, this prevents another Beechen or Henderson from popping up.

I don't see why farming for talent at Vertigo is a bad thing. I very much doubt DC is twisting any of the would-be indie folks' arms by offering them the chance to work on Batman or the JLA or other characters that were probably childhood favorites of most of them.

But does a guest appearance in some silly psuedo-event really matter at the end of the day? Plus, that may be the rumor, but just a few weeks ago they did say outright there was no plans for these characters they brought back (not to say that doesn't de-confirm big S won't show up, but the other characters won't).

The point I'm driving at really is this: Does it really matter to the point of having to cancel a series or two if these character are rotting in limbo under Vertigo or DC's main publishing arm, since they'll be rotting in limbo regardless? It's just muck for the sake of muck.

Personally, I think that Vertigo just might be better off without DC characters and simply use it to focus on creator driven works like Busiek's Astro City, Simone's Welcome to Tranquility, Aaron's Scalped, Snyder's American Vampire, Lemiere's Sweet Tooth, and get BKV back to do more work.

Well, considering how we probably wouldn't have gotten Madame Xanadu, Constantine, Unknown Solider, Sandman Mystery Theater, and some of the later Doom Patrol stuff with this idea, I'll have to respectively disagree.

I don't have problems with them keeping an eye on that and offering talent jobs, I'm mainly against this editorial team connecting and doing anything directly within Vertigo. Just do it from a distance, don't get into direct contact. It may seem harmless, but when you open direct contact, it always risks opening more, and we all know how that road will wind. I think it's just for the best to keep the two as disconnected as possible
