I just saw this. Was pretty cool. I dont know anything about Captain Marvel besides what I learned from the JLU episode Clash and Public Enemies.
The voice acting was good. It was a little talky at times, but it had heart.

It had the same problem with the other shorts...too damn short. Just when I really get into the story it's over

Also this film suffered from magical negro syndrome:cmad:
:o

I'm thinking about picking this up tonight. Are all the shorts extended like it says on the back cover? :D

This was OK....

I was hoping for a more EPIC fights in this but Clash was still better.

Don't get me wrong, the fights were still good

Extended scenes???

I never noticed any extension at all.

I clocked the Spectre to be at 12 min. and 12 seconds, GA around 11 min. and 40 seconds and Jonah Hex at 12 min. and 50 seconds

I was about to buy this and realized it is just a bunch of shorts. Aren't most of the shorts available on other DC Blu-Ray titles? I have already seen the Spectre, Jonah Hex, and Green Arrow on other DC/Batman Blu ray animated movies. If Shazam is the only short to watch, this seems rather pointless to even release all of them on one blu-ray.

^You could make the same arguement about Pixar's shorts. I agree with you though.

after watching this I was thinking about the superman V thor fight. thor wins because of his magic lightning. JL v avengers had superman winning which I thought was a load of rubbish.

great animated short though.

I have to say, these shorts have the best animation in any superhero animated effort yet, and DC as a whole is pounding Marvel into the ground animation wise. They axed their best effort unceremoniously and for no reason (Spectacular Spider-Man), and all they really have left is Avengers.

They better get back in the game, because on the other side of the coin, The only thing animation wise I have seen and not liked in recent times is Superman/Batman Public Enemies (yeah, I know some of you loved it, but that's beside the point).

Anyway, I only had the Jonah Hex short in posession, so I was ok with getting this dvd. I am glad I did. I loved all the shorts, especially the Captain Marvel one. I think that was probably the best looking Superman I have ever seen in animation, and the fights were awesome. Every movement felt fluid and the hits actually felt like they had some weight behind them during the throwdowns. I love the first time Marvel hits Black Adam in the air and how it is animated.

Uh, they didn't ax SSM, Sony did.

yep. SSM was the only thing marvel made that comes close to DC. that and hulk vs which I thought was frigging awesome.

Damn they put a lot of detail into Black Adams face. He looked like Robert Loggia.

Loved this short, it was grand.

This was pretty good. Didn't know Black Adam could shoot lightning from his hands but oh well.

It all depends on how the magic is used. If it is to control a force of nature (which Thor does most of the time), then it won't effect Superman. The lightning that the Marvel family (Black Adam included) uses is actually the power of Zeus, which is magic, so it has a detrimental effect on Supeman.

So apparently this had a soft debut on the home video market... :csad:

According to Bruce Timm, this may spell the end of the DC Showcase shorts (rumoured to be Catwoman, Lobo, Blue Beetle/Booster Gold... to be anchored by Batman: Gotham by Gaslight)

no, it's how we can afford to do the dc showcase shorts AT ALL

like it or not, making cartoons costs money....the revenue generated by the shorts as "bonus features" on other films simply doesn't cover the cost of making them...the "double dip/compilation/extended edition/exclusive 20 minute anchor film" format was the only way we could monetize the production costs...and even THAT strategy is an economic roll-of-the-dice -- the jury's still out on whether or not the showcase project is something that's profitable enough to justify making more

it's not like warner bros. is sitting there wringing its hands, chortling "okay, we made a gazillion-jillion dollars off the first go-round of the shorts, let's figure out a way to get the suckers to buy them AGAIN, heh heh heh!"

it's too early to tell if any of this is going to pay-off -- frankly, i'm just grateful that WBHV was willing to take a chance on the initiative, because, honestly, they really didn't need to....but the bottom-line is, if the compilation doesn't sell well, it's pretty much a guarantee that we won't be making any more "dc showcase" shorts, it's really as simple as that

I was really looking forward to the Batman Gotham by Gaslight short, *sigh* :csad:

Is it just me, or was this by far the best one. I loved Green Arrow, though I didn't like the very small scope, or the randomness of Black Canary (to the non fan, I knew who it was, but oh well). The people I was with actually turned up their noses and made wretching noises for Spectre and Jonah Hex.

Oh well.

thor controls lightning and the lightning is magic because it is conjured out of thin air (unlike storm).

it didn't sell because people either had already seen or owned the shorts with the exception of superman/shazam. so DC is effectively asking people to shell out the price for a full movie for a 20 minute cartoon.

if DC hadn't included the shorts on the previous movies I'm sure the numbers for shazam/superman would be greater.

I'd forgotten this was even coming out and now it's been on the shelves for over 2 weeks.

I really want to see the Shazam/Supes throwdown but I'll probably wait a while until the price on this falls. I've got the movies with other shorts anyway. I hate to drop $ for something I've seen the majority of. Couldn't they have at least dragged out from 20 mins. to 40-45 mins. and then included the other shorts?

What's so hard to believe about Superman kicking Thor across the universe? Marvel's Thor is fairly vulnerable, slower and is proven to be unable to stop the Hulk. Superman is INVULNERABLE, faster than Thor and has beaten the Hulk.

Worse, technically Thor has to spin his hammer and release it to change direction. Supes can pull precision high gee turns in radii of centimeters. Outmaneuvered by a factor of many decimal places.

Supes vs. Thor would be a good fight, but based on the fact that Thor looses to Hulk and Supes and Hulk are suppose to be the strongest in the respective universes/mediums. Then I guess Supes would win. Although, I never really believed that Thor gave his all to beat the Hulk seeing how he knows the Hulk is inherently good, just doesn't always do the right thing.

I never really like the fact that Supes was so powerful. God level never really appealed to me, and is probably the reason why I stayed away from the comics. He's an alien, a damn strong one, but no more than that. I think they should revamp Supes so that he isn't as powerful as he has become, that way force, plasma, nuclear, radiation, electric, energy what-have-you blasts have more of an effect of hurting him.

The rationale that magic hurts him and that he isn't invulnerable to it, just doesn't work for me. H*ll everyone is invulnerable to magic lol. Let the man get his arse kicked once in awhile geez.

Anyway Capt. Marvel (Shazam! for legal purposes) is the man! Bout time they did dude right. Always liked him more than Supes. I want to see more of him in a feature dvd or hopefully on film. The whole showcase was dope the. Each story was good. Didn't know the Spectre was such a bada**. Green Arrow was my least favorite, but not by much. Story was simple, but the action was dope!

^^I think you mixed up Green Arrow with Green Lantern in that last sentence.

Anyhow, I enjoyed Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam, I just wish it was longer. At 25 minutes it feels like a pilot for a SHAZAM series with Superman as the special guest star helping introduce us to the Big Red Cheese. I guess they really wanted to get this out on the shelves before the animated All-Star Superman. I think I would have preferred waiting for a longer version of the story.

Thanks I fixed that. Yeah, I wished they could've been longer, but I did enjoy seeing all the shorts, plus the bonus episodes with Jonah, and GA. Make sure you guys watch the bonus episodes.

I think we already have! Heh. It's sad to hear that DC Animated won't be continuing their line of shorts, I was hoping they did get the chance to adapt more third-tier characters in one-shots. Aw well, as long as they keep giving us promising DTVs I have no qualms.

Dang, I didn't no they were discontinuing the shorts. That would've been nice to see other characters, as you said. Oh well, I'm waiting on a JSA & JLA direct video to come out.
