DC's Metropolis

DC seems so afraid to do a live action TV show about their most famous characters without some catch, like he's still a kid, still a teen, doesn't wear the suit yet, doesn't fly, hasn't been born yet, etc. But you'd think with how TV has changed that it would be the perfect time to break ground on having a major, well known superhero with their own live action TV series with no catch. I'd say of all heroes, Batman would have been the most common-sense choice for this, since you don't need a huge special effects budget for superpowers and huge disasters or alien invasions, just a bat costume, a fancy car, a cave set, and some costumed but usually powerless criminals.

DC’s ‘Metropolis’ Digital Series Shooting June-December In NYC

by Christopher Marc. February 14, 2018

Last month, it was revealed that WB Digital Networks would be developing a new DC Comics series for their DC streaming service. The show titled Metropolis would focus on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, already having a 13-episode commitment.

Set in the so-called City of Tomorrow before the arrival of Superman, Metropolis follows Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they investigate the world of fringe science and expose the city’s dark and bizarre secrets.

Omega Underground seemingly picked up on this early on via Lois Lane audition tapes.

Well, we’ve now learned that Metropolis is looking to film in New York City filming from June to December, which is a little shocking since most of the DC shows are traditionally filmed in Canada. The series will be written by Gotham’s John Stephens and directed by Danny Cannon.

Metropolis is set to be released sometime in 2019 on the DC Digital Service.

WB/DC seem set on not diluting the movie brands. They don't want simultaneous characters (for the most part.) But that's pretty standard, it's not like Marvel have a live-action TV version of Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America etc. They have Agents of Shield, which is similar to what DC are doing.

I was actually shocked they had Superman in the 'Supergirl' TV show.

I think if everything in the DC movies was more settled and established and consistent, then it wouldn't be seen as big of a deal.

NYC ?! Nice!
Maybe the show will look more real and grounded than the CW ones. Hopefully! That's a great news :)

I'm in two minds about having different live-action versions of a lead character running around. Not that I'm against it in principle - I like to think I could separate the two in my mind no problem! But some people I know who aren't comic book readers have a problem with there being a CW and a DCEU version of both Flash and Superman at the same time.

Wonder what "redeveloped" entails.

Not that I'm expecting it to happen but I would still love to see this show actually developed into a real superman show with Superman as one of its main characters.

We can only dream :sigh:

redevelop into an actual Superman show starring Superman.

I wouldn't even mind if the show was still more Lois centric, and you are experiencing the story through her eyes.

but it still needs to feature Clark/Superman as an actual character and presence, not just a mere figment or abstract concept or someone who can only be mentioned in name only.

Sounds a little like Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

I've only seen a few eps of L+C.

I haven't watched it since it was first shown but I seem to remember that a lot of the storylines revolved around her. She was certainly not a lesser character in a 'Superman series' - and of course her name came first in the title.

If it does go down this route, it could be the early stages of Superman, like we saw when Grant Morrison re-introduced him in the New 52, where he was young and starting out, getting used to his powers, fighting for the "man on the street" against corrupt politicians and businessmen, like he did in his early comics.

If they don't want Superman, they could still have Clark starting out in Metropolis. I guess that would be too much like 'Smallville' though...

If they start developing tv shows starring their top tier superheroes. Then that would be intriguing for me and a big reason for me to get the streaming service.

If the streaming service is nothing but a big tease, then that's a much harder sell for me.

It would be really interesting but I can't see it happening. At least not for a long while.

They already gave us Tyler Hoechlin as Superman in 'Supergirl', Grant Gustin in 'Flash' and a young Bruce Wayne in 'Gotham etc. So there are already multiple actors playing the same parts. So why can't they do it here too.

Why not just connect this show to the Supergirl show? Make it a spinoff of that universe?

It makes sense if you look at Arrow and Gotham, Batman theoretically can be done better on tv than movies. A tv series is also 20+ hour episodes, why should someone care about paying for one 2hour movie when they can watch an hour of Batman weekly for "free" on tv.

Agreed. "Gotham" has pretty much proven that you can successfully present Batman's best villains on TV as well.

Really the only big expenses that any producers would have to worry about when making a Batman show is creating a worthy Bat-Suit and Batmobile.

A prequel [to] Superman show isn't going to take I don't think; it'll either be a rehash of Smallville (which we really don't need), or it'll have nothing to do with Clark Kent/Superman and it'll just be a Lois Lane Media Reporter-type role.

If they go the way of Gotham, then they'll feature a young Clark Kent, but at the farm not in the city (Smallville) and we'll have Lois (alike Gordon) fighting the likes of Zod, Doomsday, Brainiac with words and news articles; maybe the revelation will be that Doomsday & Zod can't actually read, and are simply defeated by words.

Both her and Clark were the main characters but Superman was a peripheral character. The focus was always on the Lois/Clark dynamic. Teri Hatcher really was the definitive modern Lois Lane. She was perfect. In fact, all the best Lois' were TV incarnations.

All I know is if this DC Universe streaming subscription is just Swamp Thing, Titans and a bunch of animated stuff, I don't know that I can convince myself to pay for it.

It means they are rebooting the series even before it has started production. They hit a new level of absurdness.

I would consider it if it had the old Bruce Timm animated shows, the Adam West Batman, and let me read DC comic back issues.
