DC's Metropolis

Krypton... Metropolis... both tv shows that do not employ Clark Kent/Superman?

I mean is WB simply trying to work only on the supporting cast and develop them into actual standalone characters?

It's either that or CW/WB wants to rebuild up a thirst for Supe's stories--like if there isn't one already.

There’s obviously a moron at WB who doesn’t want the big characters used on TV, so we get a halfarsed prequel show that nobody wants or cares about. Superman isn’t popular because of Lois Lane and Lex Luthor.

This is another example of trying to milk an IP for all it’s worth, even though you can’t actually use that IP properly.

We could have a Tyler Hoechlin series. Instead we get this bull****.

Krypton I totally see how it works but this I can’t wrap my head around at all tbh. It may surprise me but I’m not holding my breath.

DC should just make a proper Superman TV series.

What amazes me is that WB has little to no faith in a movie about Superman but they think people will be interested in shows built around him in which he never appears.

Yeah, just give Tyler a friggin show.

Or maybe they just think they're interesting, and there are writers who are interested in working with those characters.

Probably. I'm not against the show. I just find it bizarre.

DC is giving fans a Superman world, without Superman.

Why not just make an original drama, unless they're just going to rehash half-baked crime drama ideas and submit it under this moniker... hehehe, use comic book logic to solve real-world-like problems.

Basically the Superman TV franchise is like this - Supergirl, Krypton, and Metropolis. All of which don't star Superman, yet Supergirl is the only one using him.

Now we also know why Lois Lane is not coming to Supergirl either.

They may as well let Supergirl use Superman full-time once Tyler finishes his other projects.

I always hoped for a Supergirl prequel show about Superman but it is what it is. I’m just hoping this show turns out good.

Superman has had plenty of movies and TV series, and there has been interest in Lois Lane as a lead for awhile.

Greg Rucka recently teased that he's closer than ever to writing his long dreamed for Lois Lane comic book series. She already had a trilogy of successful young adult novels that focused on investigating wrongdoing in Metropolis as a teenager with a young Lex's and Clark's help. She's also going to be heavily featured in the best selling and mega successful DC Super Hero Girls next month.

During Smallville, instead of Clark being everyone's favorite, characters like Chloe Sullivan (young journalist), Lex Luthor (evolution to evil), and Lois Lane (developing journalist) were often far more popular than Clark himself. Currently, one of the most beloved aspects of Supergirl is the friendship between Kara and Lena Luthor and the drama of whether Lena will follow in her family's evil footsteps. Before Gotham, people had some of the same concerns, but then they watched the show, and it's succeeded because of the overall world created, including compelling supporting characters and engaging plots.

Get outside a place like this and to more female-oriented spaces, and you'll find there is plenty of enthusiasm for this type of program. It has a lot of potential, and it doesn't negate Superman's presence in the slightest. He guest stars occasionally on Supergirl, and he will continue to have a presence in the DCEU even if it's not right away. Superman will be fine, and people who want to see him have been spoiled for years with Clark-centric TV series and films that have happened almost unabated for nearly 80 years. His brand, if the shows are good, will only be strengthened by these programs.

Spoiled, eh? Those who simply want their favorite Superhero shown and given respect in the chosen medium?

I mean is that grounds to call those kinds of fans spoiled?

Indeed.

And I’d hardly call one great movie, one good movie, and one okay TV series in 40 years ‘spoiled’.

Fans have had to suffer four awful movies, another mediocre one, and a TV series where he’s appeared only briefly in three or four episodes.

Superman deserves a series of his own, so do his fans.

In cases like Gotham, at least they have a younger version of Bruce Wayne where we get to see him go on a journey of how he will eventually take on the mantle of being Batman one day.

Why would anyone think that there would be any profit in doing a prequel show about Lois and Lex? One of the biggest reasons why they're so well known is because of their association with Superman. Take that away and you won't really have a selling point to work off of.

I mean It's like the folks over at Warner Bros and DC have daily meetings on how they can make constant terrible decisions with their properties.

Just give us a damn superman tv show already instead of this constant tease with shows such as Supergirl, Krypton and now this.

That's not what it means or what I meant. I don't mean it in an insulting way, meaning that I don't feel that it's wrong to want to see more Superman and to see him respected. As a Superman fan, I'm always keen for more.

It just means, in the grand scheme of things, Superman has had far more exposure than even characters like Wonder Woman who was created not long after he was. So think about how you feel about Superman, and then apply that feeling to others who may have their own favorite character who isn't Superman and who either constantly plays second fiddle or doesn't get exposure at all.

Basically, this isn't an either/or thing. A Metropolis show isn't taking away from Superman or taking anything away from you. Superman can still have and be all the things you want, and this show can exist. Moreover, these shows can flesh his world out and reach new fans.

I could understand them keeping Superman off the small screen, if he was doing well on the big screen.

Superman deserves nothing. He's a great character who has plenty of chances for getting attention. He's not going anywhere. There will probably always be Superman stories. The fact that the character keeps getting new shots despite his lackluster history is proof of that. The reason why Superman fans are spoiled is because they can't even embrace one Superman-related rather than Superman-centric thing without thinking it is an either/or situation. As if this show is taking away opportunities for Superman to get films, television shows, comics, etc. Imagine being a fan of a female character or character of color who rarely has the privilege of failing as often as Superman does.

How is that association being taken away?

By not having him on the show, let alone the premise of the show being where it takes place before he ever arrived in Metropolis.

Huh? It's a show called Metropolis starring Lois and Lex that is streaming on a DC service. There's no way those who watch the show will not do so, in part, because of its association with Superman. It can feature heaps of material from the Superman mythos that has been frequently underserved. We could see characters like Bibbo, Maggie Sawyer, Dan Turpin, Bruno Mannheim, John Henry Irons, etc.

I mean, I would be right there with you if somehow they connect Krypton, Metropolis, Supergirl into one big narrative of the big guy in blue and red.

But they all seem like one-shots and isolated. They can be easily viewed as throw away premises and feels like DC is leaving no stones un-turned as far as stories are concerned, when they haven't realized half of the stories written of him in comics over 70+ years. Some of those stories are in sore need of re-do and update as well.

There are many, many, many fantastic female and ethnic characters out there who deserve their chance of a series or movies. This is not an equality issue.

The point here is that WB are cynically attempting to ride on Superman’s popularity for financial gain, despite not actually using him. Nobody wants a Lois Lane/Lex Luthor series. This is mishandling of an IP, pure and simple.

Superman has been given the raw end of the deal in recent years. This does nothing to change that.

a Superman show without Superman.........sigh......what's the point?

Wow. I'm so glad you already know the fate of the show and its audience. It doesn't matter that Lois Lane has had a successful YA novel series. It doesn't matter that Lois Lane has heaps of fans who have been lobbying for this type of show or a comic book series for ages. It doesn't matter that celebrated writers like Greg Rucka are fully behind Lois as a solo character in her own right. You know all, right? Why doesn't Lois Lane deserve a chance? Why can't this Lois be a woman of color as she was in All Star Superman, Secret Identity, and American Alien? If Lois fails, then she fails. Let's test your hypothesis before assuming you are correct.

So what's the deal? Sounds like Lane and Luthor are the new Scully and Mulder - investigating wacky goings-on. And gradually, one assumes, Luthor goes to the dark side?

:hmm

Superman stories are about more than just him. The thematic core is about truth, justice, and hope. He ultimately makes Metropolis his home base and falls in love with Lois and falls out with Lex. To explore those important themes and illuminate what will make these important characters so appealing and aggravating to Superman has a lot of potential to hit the same notes that Superman stories do. I can't imagine being a genuine fan of Superman and not caring about these major characters and themes. Superman himself finds these people and places intriguing. I understand why.

Frankly, we have yet to have a true, modern day, Superman live action TV show.

You can't really count Smallville since the while premise of that show was about Clark Kent's days before he became superman. Even when he officially took on the mantle, because of Tom's unwillingness to wear the costume, we never got a proper version of Superman on that show.

yeah, but you can explore all of that and still have Clark Kent/Superman in the show.

if the show starts out before Clark/Superman arrives in Metropolis, but then he gets added to the show in Season 2 onward, then fine.

but if the whole show is going to be 4 or 5 seasons all without Clark/Superman then I can't say I'm too interested.

So in other words, milk the brand for all that it's worth without actually using the actual brand itself?

How does that make any sense? And like others have said, is there really enough interest out there to actually invest time and money into making a prequel about just these two characters?
