Just thought to start a thread about how you would compare the final theatrical movie to the leaked 2010 script. Did you think the movie or the script was better?

As the writers Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick said in interviews and as you can see in the final film, pretty much 70% of the script remained the same, but due to budget constraints, some elements had be cut or changed:

- Garrison Kane, Sluggo, Wyre was merged into Angel Dust. I liked the physicality Gina Carino brought to the role, but I would have liked to have seen Garrison Kane etc as they are involved in the Weapon X creation of Deadpool in the comics, plus I think they maybe would have added a bit more 'colour' to the action scenes with Garrison's bionic arms that change shape & Wyre's wires coming from his hands etc, but I understand why they were cut and doesn't bother me.

- Patch was in original script as the bartender in Sister Margaret's like in the comics, but was merged into Weasel's character to save money. This was a good choice merging the Weasel & Patch character into one.

- Groundhog Day suicide montage montage was cut. This is probably the only scene from the script I would have LOVED to have seen as I can imagine Wade coming up with gory/creative ways to kill himself.

- Two action scenes where cut involving a huge gun fight in a building for the finale and an extended motorcycle chase with Ajax on the highway. Once again, I would have liked to seen these set pieces, but understand why they were cut.

- Dr Killebrew showed up at the end before the credits as the TRUE creator of Deadpool, potentially setting up for sequel, but was cut.

- During the fight with Wade & Ajax in the flaming workshop, Wade carved something into Ajax's forehead and later on find out he carved a name tag into his forehead saying 'Hello, my name is Francis'

- Francis was actually locked up for 5 years after the fight in the workshop and in the script, Wade actually waited 5 years for his revenge and during then, he was taking mercenary jobs in a montage. But in final film, he wakes up from rubble and the montage is instead him searching for Francis and Ajax is not locked up for 5 years in final film.

There are some other little scenes cut as well like SLIGHT structure differences and Amy Winehouse jokes, but guessing had to cut because she died a year after they wrote that 2010 leaked script.

Anyways, what are thoughts on these cuts/changes. Do you think the final film was better than the script or vide versa?

There's another scene, in South America, where Wade confronts a quack doctor and kills him. It was actually filmed, but cut. The writers also revealed that the Dr. Killebrew scenes were also filmed, but ended up on the cutting room floor to simplify the story.

What I think the film (and the final script) does much better than that first draft, is tackle on the story of Wade's cancer and his love story with Vanessa. The bulk of it was there in the script --- but it was mostly just there. I thought that needed some work, and luckily the filmmakers thought the same, too, and developed the characters and serious aspects of the story further.

I remember, for example, the scene in which Wade and Vanessa discuss the cancer in his apartment (the X-Men Origins: Wolverine action figure / Wham! album scene): in the script he tells Vanessa that he's leaving, but she makes him promise that he'll come back if he survived. And that's it. It's a deal, they shake pinkies, and out he goes. It has much more weight in the film, as do the workshop scenes and other welcome additions to the dramatic and romantic side of the story.

The first draft was a GREAT starting point, but still needed work (and of course they further worked on the script, having written a draft every year). Despite budget cuts the final product is much more fleshed out and the characters more three-dimensional.

P.S.: I think Negasonic Teenage Warhead brought enough color to the final fight, and some more superheroism on the good guys' side, which was a demand from director Tim Miller.

You make GREAT points and these are my thoughts exactly! Oh wow, I never knew that they actually filmed the South America and Dr Killebrew scenes, but they cut them in editing. Is there an interview link where they say this? Is so, that's fantastic! I'd LOVE to see them as deleted scenes.

Sure.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick talk about that and much more in this lenghty podcast.

And Ryan Reynolds talks about the Guadalajara scene here and confirms it'll be on the home video extras:

Wow, that's great thanks! Now I love this movie even more now lol I have some more scenes to look forward to on the Blu-ray and they are actually scenes from the leaked script!

Still surprised they didn't include the suicide montage as that would have been the cherry on top for me.

My guess is, they couldn't come up with a good place within the narrative to fit a suicide montage, at least without displacing something else more important.
