Who do you think did a better job in their respective roles?

Dean Cain for me.
I know most people complain that his Superman wasn't strong enough... but it was absolutely the intention of the show. They were TRYING to make Superman seem like a characature because they were making Superman out to be the disguise. That's not a flaw on Cain, whether you like that interpretation or not.
And for me, he just owns his character in a way Routh simple didn't. He's a much better actor IMO.
Every line Routh speaks sounds like it's rehearsed. For me, every line Cain speaks, sounds sincere. And he has a much better range of emotions and facial expressions.
Plus, Cain had 1000x more chemistry with Hatcher than Routh did with Bosworth![]()
Cain definitely left his original mark on the character, but it wasn't a good mark. It was downright embarassing at times.
I'd rank the Superman actors like this.
Christopher Reeve
Henry Cavill (probably)
Brandon Routh
George Reeves
Kirk Alyn
Dean Cain

It's easy to rank Cavill. He can either be not as perfect as Chris Reeve or better than Reeve.
He doesn't have much competition from any of the others. That isn't a compliment to Cavill. It's more of an assessment of how weak the other Superman interpretations and performances have been.
They are easy to top.
You have the Superman from an outdated Donner sequel.
The Superman from a campy 60s kids show.
The Superman from campy serials for children.
The Superman from a cheesy romantic comedy series.
Aside from Reeve, Superman has been fail in live action.
The one thing you can say cain had for sure over routh was charisma. He was at least engaging in the role. Routh's superman i found quite dull and listless. Reeve had charisma as well. Routh sort of took that role and dulled it.

Reeve's Superman and Routh's Superman are identical
Cain of course. He did amazing work portraying the character on TV. Routh, nice guy, terrible actor.

You forgot to add Box Office Cancer to Routh's description.
And this really isn't a fair comparison. Out of the two, only Cain was able to play Superman more than once...
What movie Cain starred in let alone played in that was a box office hit?
Four seasons on a SUCCESSFUL NETWORK SHOW > Three FAILED feature films.
Deal with it.
