Defining Superman's Powers In A Reboot

I remember another that was just as bad. It was near the end when he was flying in the clouds.

i dont know why they felt the need, the look like very simple shots. and his cape was obviously cg in alot of scenes. and then you have the elevator change that looks like he is standing on a box

Here it is. How the hell did I forget about this one? It's amazing that they could have honestly thought that we wouldn't notice CGI as bad as this. This is truly terrible.

I'm reminded of The Polar Express.

Who knows why. maybe with such a large budget they felt brave and wanted to try new/different things.
Overall it looked pretty good except for those shots.

Showtime, the scene you`re talking about is CLEARLY a CG shot. And it`s one of the worst.

Not when he is stopped in mid air, maybe just before that shot, but not the frame or two where he comes to the stop. There was footage of him in the rig during that shot on the internet or on the dvd.

Holly s**t that looks awful. It reminds me of that awful first wallcrawling shot in the first Spider-Man movie, you know the one when he has on the make shift cotume as he chases Uncle Ben's killer? Man did I hate that shot. How come I didn't remember it (SR's) CGI looking that bad? Sony Image works is spotty as hell.

Pardon me, I thought it was near the end, it's only 47 minutes in. Here it is.

Dear lord that is that bad. Gosh maybe I blocked these shots out of my mind. Seriously, put dude on a rig and call it a day. I like rigging and erasing wires when protraying flying. Atleast you don't have to deal with a CGI character all of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love CGI but it shouldn't be used all of the time and shots like these prove that fact.

Agreed. I HATED that shot in Spider-Man too.

Why didn't they use Brandon on this shots? I just don't get it?

Whether you liked, loved, or hated S.R., there's no getting around the fact that that's bad CGI right there.
I hope they get someone else to do the FX in M.O.S., or at least use live action shots more.

This is when he is flying to Lois's house right?

Yes. Right after he flew down the street above the people.

Why didn't they use Brandon on this shots? I just don't get it?

What happened is, Singer didn't like some of the shots or did not shoot some of the shots, so they were added with CGI.

That being said, the CGI was awful for Superman. The CGI in the rest of the movie was decent, but the CGI Superman came out awful. Did it prevent me from enjoying the movie, no way, but when you look at it it is indeed pretty laughable.

Heck some of my favorite movies are from the late 70's into the 80's where CGI was an afterthought. Now a lot of us won't enjoy the movie if the CGI is "bad". I think Superman Returns had some other issues that were much more major than CGI.

thats true, we woulnt be going crazy over the suit, the colors, lois, cgi etc.. if the movie was executed properly.

Imho the studio's have spoiled us with some really fantastic CGI in films the last few yrs.
Now we expect every CGI shot in every film to be photo realistic, and when there not, we complain.(raises hand)

I think you guys are overreacting a bit.:o

I wouldn't mind if they went with a different effects house (ILM or WETA) and yes there were some bad CG shots (such as the one qouted below) but IMO the majority was well done. And a not unimportant fact is that the SR effects team got recognition for their work from their peers with nominations for Visual Effects Society, BAFTA and Academy awards.

IF Imageworks were to return they will more than likely improve upon what they did last time.

That picture right there is the worst CGI shot in the entire movie, for me. The rest was fine. From fine to pretty impressive. All the main sequences had very good CGI, as far as I can remember.

I hope nobody believes that I in anyway insinuated that bad CGI was the worse of SR's problems. I was just commenting on the poor CGI shots that I didn't remember and would perfer to not see again. I've got on the TIH fans about them acting as if the CGI will ruin the movie for them so I'm no CGI snob. I am going to voice my opinion about poor CGI though.

I agree. That first shot was horrendous. He looked like a character on Shrek.

Wow talk about overreacting and being negative as can be!

I definitely agree with everyone about the fact they could have used a rig for some scenes instead of cgi, but man Superman looks pretty good considering he's COMPUTER GENERATED!

SR's SFX were very good, though of course ILM could do a better job, their the top dogs.

I really hope MOS uses more real shots of Routh next time so everyone won't complain so much

The problem is HANCOCK has surpass SR in the sense of ability but not beacuse of sfx but style. Supes just sort of stands there while they hit him and then just pushes them over if you get what I mean. His powers have only been showcased at one-at-a-time. The only exception is when he flys and uses strength. What is needed is him to use all his powers such as shooting heat rays while punching a villain to death in midair.

I agree. MOS is going to have to show some feat of ability( non strength) that the makes the audience stop and look at just how powerful Superman is.

I think Singer is right for this after seeing X2. Magneto's escape/grenade pin incident, Nightcrawler's attack, and Storm's tornadoe sequence shows he understands how to show style with a character's powers even if Singer's fight cheoreography isn't very good or exciting.

I disagree. I loved the fight between Wolverine and Lady Deatstrike (sp?). It was more than just the choreography and style, there was real emotion and purpose, and that's why I like Singer as a director. He makes me care about the characters, and what happens to them. It feels very real.

Another example is the way Mystique fought, especially in X-2, pretty cool, IMO. And what to say of the Nightcrawler's attack in the White House. Yeah, Singer may not be the best ever at action, but he has done some real good stuff, IMO. And he is still very young. I'm sure he is paying attention and has the capacity to learn; who knows, he could surprise us.

The Wolverine House Attack was probably the better instance of showing Wolverine cutting lose( I think the solo will at least show Singer how to use Adamantium even if the movie blows), but the idea of two indestructible metals going toe-to-toe just screams for something more exciting.

But we agree that Singer has certain why of making action interesting in different ways(Mystique in X1 vs. Wolverine), but there's something to be said for that gut-busting, primal feel of seeing a brainless fight.

^I doubt you'll ever see "brainless fighting" in a Singer film.
