DBFC-PV_08-06-15.jpg

Sega has released the first in a series of trailers introducing the character roster from Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, its upcoming fighting game featuring characters from Dengeki Bunko novels.
Showcased in the first trailer include:

  • Asuna (Sword Art Online) – The sub-leader of the Knights of the Blood,
the strongest guild in Aincrad. Her nickname is “The Flash” due to her speed with her rapier, Lambent Light. Kirito is her boyfriend.
  • Kuroyukihime (Accel World) – The Umezato Jr. High student council V.P. She’s nicknamed Kuroyukihime, or “Snow Black,” because of her beauty. Her Brain Burst avatar is Black Lotus and she is Legion Master of the Nega Nebulas.
  • Shizuo Heiwajima (Durarara!!) – A debt collector who dresses like a bartender. He hates violence, but when he loses his temper, he’s the strongest man in Ikebukuro. Flying vending machines are a clue that he’s around.
  • Tomoka Minato (Ro-Kyu-Bi!) – A basketball ace at Keishin Academy. Her mother does traditional dance and her father is a tea master, so her manners are impeccable. But when she starts to play basketball…

Meet Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax’s Quenser, Erio, Mashiro, And Dokuro. August 13, 2015 . 1:30pm

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax will be the first time people get to meet many of its characters, so get to know Quenser and some supports before you play the game.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Vita on October 6, but people coming to the game may have a little trouble completely enjoying the game. Why? Because some of these characters are from properties that haven’t enjoyed as much exposure overseas. They’re almost completely new to us.

One of them is Quenser Barbotage, from Heavy Object. He’s the star of the series and a playable fighter in Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax. In the source material, he’s an Alaskan mechanic learning to repair Objects, military weapons that are huge, mechanized takes on futuristic tanks and airships. He ends up being being part of the 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion on the front lines of war for the Legitimacy Kingdom.
[YT]jigyLJcIXoI[/YT]

What’s interesting is that Quenser is primarily a Trainee Mechanic in Heavy Object, despite being a soldier. So while a lot of his attacks feature guns and bombs, he calls upon his more combat-worthy friends for his special attacks in Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax. With one of his special moves, Heivia Winchell appears with a rocket to cover Quenser from the air as he drops a bomb and retreats. In another, one Climax Gauge bar can call Object Pilot Milinda Brantini in with the Baby Magnum for a follow-up to his attack. They’re always together in the series, so of course the team stays together in the game.

Heivia is important as he ends up being Quenser’s best friend in Heavy Object. The two end up working together to event take down Objects on their own in the series without actually using an Object, which is a rather big accomplishment. Milindia is the primary heroine and, of course, the love interest for Quenser. She’s referred to as the Princess, and proves herself to be a kind and exceptional pilot throughout the series.
[YT]K2WXYez3MoA[/YT]

Erio Towa is the heroine in Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. She’s a young girl who disappeared, reappeared with amnesia, and believed she was an alien after the experience. She eventually recovers, but the disconnect drives much of the story.

In Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, her defense support skill is taken straight from her behavior in the manga. When she gets anxious or upset, she wraps herself up in her futon in the series. Should she come out to protect the player’s fighter, she’ll be hopping out in her futon to act as a shield. Her attack support is more generic, as it sees her running in and tripping to do damage.

Mashiro Shiina from The Pet Girl of Sakurasou is another support character that may not be too famous. She is in the series she’s from, due to her being an exceptional artist who’s come to the Suimei University of the Arts to become a manga artist after achieving some some worldwide acclaim for her drawings. She’s the love interest of the main character, Sorata.

Her support abilities in Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax both draw from character traits found in the series. For example, she loves baumkuchen cakes, and one of her attacks sees her assaulting the opponent with them. Also, Sorata is a big fan of cats and has many of them as pets, and she’ll summon four of his pets to attack as her second support.
[YT]aMEvCd7XVrQ[/YT]

Which brings us to the final character in this feature, Dokuro the angel from Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan. She was sent to the past to kill the series’ hero, Sakura Kusakabe, but doesn’t since she’s fallen in love with him. Comedy ensues.

In Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax she has two support attacks. In one, she wields Excalibolg, her spiked club, and uses it to beat the opponent. In the other, she drops from above to attack the foe. Which fits, because she’s an angel and all.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on October 6. It will include all of these characters and more. It will be $39.99 for the console version and $29.99 on the handheld.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition adding The Irregular at Magic High School’s Tatsuya Shiba this fall
Published 45 mins ago. 2 comments.

Miyuki Shiba also getting support character spot.

The Irregular at Magic High School protagonist Tatsuya Shiba will join Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition as a playable character this fall, Sega announced.
Previously, only Tatsuya’s sister Miyuki was playable, with Tatsuya available as a support character. Now the roles are reversed, with Miyuki also getting a support character role in addition to her playable appearance.
Tatsuya’s main attacks consist of kicks. Although he doesn’t carry a long-range weapon, he is a tall character, so he has a bit of reach in himself. While he moves at standard speeds, he has a technique that lets him approach the enemy in an instant, and is an easy to use character for both beginner and advanced players

.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Ignition is an updated version of Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax, currently only available in Japanese arcades. It launched on July 28 with two new characters, new systems, and character balance updates. A console port has not been announced.
Thanks, Dengeki Online.

so....wait......the Ignition version is Japanese arcade only and not the same one that's coming to the PS3 in October?

if that's the case, I can see that as an "excuse" for porting the Ignition version to the PS4 later on.

We'll see he'll most likely be DLC for the game on ps3 and still show up on the ps4 .

yeah. we'll see.

hope it does well enough on the PS3 or enough consumers show interest to warrant a PS4 port.

The Cast of Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax Aren’t Interested in Talking Things Out. October 6, 2015 . 7:30pm

With all these different personalities running around you have to wonder: what exactly do all these people have to say to each other?

One of the biggest strengths of crossovers comes from the concept of bringing together characters from a myriad of different worlds. Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax is no exception to that idea, bringing together fighters ranging from Sword Art Online to My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute in order to battle for supremacy. But with all these different personalities running around you have to wonder: what exactly do all these people have to say to each other?

In most of Fighting Climax’s modes, surprisingly little, it turns out. Some characters have very brief introduction and win quotes with each other, but most of it is pretty unsubstantial (Kirito is impressed with everyone’s weapons like they’re MMO items, Kirino thinks everyone is cute, etc.). The arcade mode has a story, but one that focuses solely on a conflict between your character and a dream-hating monster thing called Zetsumu. Throughout the story Zetsumu steals the identities of various characters, but there’s no real interaction between any of the roster since you’re just battling imitations.

The most substantial interactions are in the game’s Dream Duel mode. In this mode you can choose from one of six different scenarios per character. Each scenario consists of a brief conversation with another character on the roster, told in a visual novel-style similar to the arcade mode. After the conversation’s over, you beat the character up and get sent back to the menu.

My favorite character in the game has to be Shizuo because I’m a big fan of Durarara!!, so naturally I had to try out his Dream Duels first. His first opponent is Mikoto Misaka from A Certain Magical Index. Mikoto zaps Shizuo with a giga-volt, and then gets surprised that he survived. Shizuo justifiably gets upset, and they start to fight. It’s kind of a nothing conversation, unfortunately.

Things picked up a little when Shizuo met Kirito. Shizuo immediately notices that Kirito looks and dresses like his long-term rival, Izaya, and starts getting angry. However, somehow Kirito manages to convince Shizuo he’s a good guy. It’s an amusing enough conversation, but it didn’t really capture the characters all that well to me.

My favorite conversation was the last one with Tomoka Minato from Ro-Kyu-Bu. Tomoka naively suggests that instead of being angry all the time, Shizuo should just talk things out with Izaya. Shizuo seems to take this advice to heart… before slowly devolving into maniacal laughter. It was the first time I felt that the character was genuinely nailed, and the conversation was pretty funny to boot.

Playing through the Dream Duel mode with Shizuo was probably my most enjoyable run through it, but that isn’t really saying much. I’ll admit I don’t know much about a lot of the cast members, but for the ones I do, it was very rare that the Dream Duel conversations were both interesting and managed to capture the character in a way that didn’t feel shallow. On top of that, the conversations themselves don’t last more than a minute before going into the fight. It’s understandable that writing crossovers can be difficult, but it’s hard to imagine fans of any of these characters being satisfied by the interactions going on here. I certainly wasn’t.

It’s a shame, because beyond Dream Duels there really isn’t much interaction going on between all these characters. Crossover fighting games don’t necessarily have the best reputation for showcasing character interactions, but I’d say even Marvel Vs Capcom 3 win quotes are more interesting than this. Seeing as Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax already has a visual novel-esque system set up in the game, it just feels like a wasted opportunity.
