DiCaprio and Winslet Reunite on Revolutionary Road

Love the new trailer. Definitely watching this and Valkyrie back to back.

so what is this movie about

i was kinda hoping just before the trailer finishes a dinosaur foot would stomp on a car

The script is fantastic. I almost wish this movie were longer. If Mendes is on his game, this will be an amazing movie. So simple a concept and yet so, so powerful.

I'm going to a screening on Tuesday. I have a feeling this is going to be a packed house. I will be there super early. I should bring a chair and a catheter. :hehe:

This was really great, loved the costumes, Winslet was on point, DeCaprio was great. You'll laugh, you'll cry....

Kate Winslet took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for this movie tonight.

I'm sad that neither this nor Frost/Nixon have opened at my local theater yet. This is playing in a neighboring town, but I'm not sure I want to make an hour drive to see it over there...hopefully it'll open soon. I'm very much look forward to seeing it.

Very happy about Winslet winning - it was totally deserved, imo. I'd say she and Meryl are tied for best performance of the year by a lead actress, but I give Kate the edge b/c A.) She had a slightly richer character to work with in this film than Meryl did in Doubt, and B.) She's long overdue. I hope the Oscars don't try and give her Best Supporting Actress as a consolation prize (like I thought the Globes were going to do when she first won it). She really deserves it in the lead category this year.

This was very good. Michael Shannon was excellent. Winslet's Globe was well earned and DiCaprio did great as well.

Saw this a couple days ago and was stunned at how pedestrian it was. The film doesn't say a single thing of interest that wasn't said in far better films such as Little Children, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf and Mendes' own American Beauty. Even the acting was troublesome: Winslet was good, if unremarkable, while DiCaprio was badly miscast. As for Shannon, who played Professor Plot Device, he was unbearably hammy, and annoying. His character was essentially only needed to provide the audience with a literal understanding of the themes and concepts of the film, as well as reveal what everyone was thinking. Subtelty be damned, I suppose.

This is the worst kind of Oscar-bait: Sledge-hammer symbolism, preach-to-the-cheap seats performances and bland, uninspired "safe" direction. What a waste of time for all involved, as well as the ticket-buyers.

And what the hell was up with Dylan Baker's ridiculous accent? Holy smokes!

Saw this last night. Thought it was pretty good. One of DeCaprio's better performances, actually, and probably one of Winslet's most impressive as well. I don't think either of them were miscast. It's certainly not a brilliant concept, nor is it particularly subtle, but it's interesting as a film, because it's a completey unsubtle movie which often features a lot of subtleties to the acting performances. There's a great piece of acting toward the end where Decaprio is screaming, about as enraged as an actor can get, and for a few scant seconds, he breaks down into these seizure-like sobs like a small child in the middle of it, and then goes right back to being angry. This was a joy to watch because of the performances. I wouldn't exactly call this "pedestrian", but it's true that it doesn't take too many risks in the direction or tell us anything we don't know. And yeah, the themes in it have been touched on before (what hasn't?). You have to essentially look at it from the point of view of people in 1955 for the story elements to have much impact at all, and the story isn't anything amazing. It's a very small, personal film. But overall, it's a well crafted film, albeit a safe one, although there are some hiccups toward the end, where Winslet sounds like she's reading her "preachy" lines. I thought the chemistry between DeCaprio and Winslet was phenomenal, far beyond anything they displayed in TITANIC. The supporting cast is also very good. The music was a bit reminiscent of...well, everything else Thomas Newman has ever done, but very good nontheless. I thought that Michael Shannon stole the show and was very funny in a limited role, and Kathy Bates was also fantastic in a smaller part. I suspect Dylan Baker's accent was to cover up the fact that his character was boring and mostly useless. I did sort of wonder where the Wheeler's kids went to during the film, as they were only in about two scenes. It's a depressing movie, to be sure, but I came out of it looking at it as more of a cautionary tale that made some statements about conformity. The ending, where Kathy Bates is petting the cutest dog you'll ever see, and talking to her husband, and what comes of that, is great.

I really wasn't interested in this movie after the trailers but I found myself totally captivated for the 2 hour run time, watching the sparks fly and the tension build between DiCaprio and Winslet.

The movie is simplicity itself, the broad theme is simply "is living a "normal" life the true definition of insanity ?" but it's the painful way it unfolds and the emotions it stirs in you as you watch and ask what you would do that makes it such a compelling watch.

Both leads have never been better, despite some grandstanding dialogue both Winslet and DiCaprio cut through it with a raw, biting emotion that brings every scene to life, DiCaprio's depiction of Frank Wheeler's frustration at his inability to stop the downward spiral, mixed with his angry confusion at why it is happening, is some of the best acting ive seen, and feels eerily real.

Are Michael Shannon's few scenes that good?

I'd say they were ok, I figured his character who is nuts, being the only one who thought Winslet's fantasy idealism to be logical, was just an unsubtle way of driving home the central theme.

Gotcha, I saw the behind the scenes and they didn't look amazing like described by many....do you think Leo deserved a nomination?

I'd need to see all the nominations to form a fair opinion but to me it is the second best performance of 2008 that I have seen so far.

just saw the movie and it was really good. It's such a shame that Leo was snubbed for best actor nom. I think Kate should have been nominated for this movie too.

I saw this last night. Such an amazing film. Leo and Kate both should have been nominated for Oscars... the fact that they aren't pisses me off. I also can't believe that they ignored Mendes and the film itself. I'm glad Michael Shannon got recognized, but he was hardly in this movie and if he beats out Ledger, then I'm never watching the Oscars again.

This is such a great movie! Very well done, and well acted. I agree, Revolutionary Road deserved alot more nominations than it got.

Michael Shannon was the showstopper; he was awesome as Kathy Bate's crazed son~
