If she's restricted from intaking a certain amount of carbs, that doesn't really mean she won't crave them.
It's saying that it causes cravings, which people without control or awareness over what they eat and/or drink will almost certainly indulge in.
I'm not trying to argue that either is better, really... Like I said before, if you want to lose weight, drop soda completely.
However, I do sincerely doubt that she dropped 30 lbs. with NO diet change. Either that, or the Mountain Dew was her one (and only) vice.
Phase 1 of The South Beach Diet is designed to break carb cravings. After that, it's a lifestyle change to elimnate bad carbs. I really doubt that if aspartame caused cravings for everyone, it would be included on carb restictive diets. I don't think it's the sweetener, it's the caffeine, which increases metabolism.
As for the woman for which I worked, that was the single change she made. She was elderly and really didn't care to stop eating her favorite foods ( she even ate fast food quite a bit) but making the switch to diet soda worked like a charm for her. I wouldn't have believed it could have such an effect on someone ( and I doubt it would for everyone ) but for her, it did.
