If you have an official digital copy of a movie, is it of lesser quality than a blu-ray copy?

The digital copy of a movie is usually the same quality as a DVD being 480p resolution as far as I know.

By far, as has been mentioned above, not only are they 480p versions, they are also incredibly compressed, so even though they are 480p they are not very good 480p versions being that they are somewhere around 1.5GB.

Full BR movies at 1080p are approximately 50GB in size. So a 1:1 digital copy will be approximately the same size, hence why you only get a 1.5GB digital copy.

A lot more plays into getting very good digital rips, you can have a decent 1080p rip at 4GB in size, or a decent 480p rip at 1.5GB in size.

But their full size or larger size digital counter parts will always be better rips, copies, versions because the more you compress and shrink down the size of the digital rip, the more you lose.

720p 1.5GB <<<<< 720p 4GB <<<< 720p 8GB
