Relevent parts here, full interview in the link above:

You were also involved with AVP and AVPR, which are two great franchises, but they haven’t been able to work as a joint franchise. When are we going to see them go separate? Or are we going to see a third AVP?

John Davis: Well, the Governor has mentioned to me that when he ceases to be Governor, if he doesn’t run for the Senate and all of that stuff, he’d like to do a movie or two again. And I don’t know, maybe we could restart the Predator franchise.

So if Arnold wanted to do it, it’s going to get made?

John Davis: Well we’d have to come up with a really good script and a really great angle on it, but Predator was the first movie I was ever involved with, so it’s always going to have a really soft spot in my heart.

So is the AVP franchise on hold for now?

John Davis: I think we’ve logically done what we could’ve done with the two AVP movies.
But I think there’s something to go back to with Predator .

How do you see the character that Arnold plays to that franchise?

John Davis: I don’t know yet. But I think Predator is a great character and a great monster.

I'm so happy that AvP has died, the entire concept was always an abortion. It would be like Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise being crossed over with Shoot 'Em Up (The one where Clive Owen slaughters half the Earth's population).

I think audience familiarity hindered the Alien films after the third one. However because Predator can be more action focused, that wouldn't be a problem.

I hope they do a The Rock style deal with Arnie in the Sean Connery role and Gerard butler, Jason Statham or Thomas Jane in the Nic Cage role. To top it off get Sylvester Stallone to direct!

Thoughts? Where you AvP fans? Did you hate them? Would you rather solo Alien films? Solo Predator films? Both franchises continued (Anyone who says reboot should kill themselves immedietly)?

I never saw either of these films. I loved Aliens and most of the Predator movies, but the idea of combining the worlds never intrigued me; it just seemed like a cash cow.

I am all for the return of standalone Predator movies.

This proposed Predator movie would still be at Fox though right ?

The Predator is literally the most convincing alien lifeform Hollywood has ever come up with. I love the Preds, they are my favourite movie monsters (even moreso than werewolves). Much as I think the Alien movies are better, during the AVP franchise I always root for the Predators.

It's too bad we'll never see a AVP movie that was properly made. :down

The original AvP comic book mini-series was actually quite good. That could have been done as a quality film IMO, but it would have taken some serious money since it took place in the future on another planet.

The problem is that the storylines were dumbed down and corners were cut by having the action take place on modern-day Earth. Lame.

Since the AvP series has been screwed up so severely at this point, it seems like a return to solo series is the only way to go.

I agree, and I think it's because the Preds have been depicted as an advanced species and highly intelligent - not too far from the realm of believability if aliens really did exist. Most previous sci-fi or horror movie monsters are either just animals/monsters (no offense to Aliens but that's pretty much what they are) or plain stupid & brainless. Pred 1 and 2 along with AvP Requiem show this species as highly technologically evolved, quick thinkers, & able to fight mano a mano when necessary. And they carry their own "code of ethics" into battle which makes them relatable, they're not just indiscriminatory killers.

I have thought about the possbility of Predator 3 for some while. I think it could work nicely if it keeps to the rules established in the first two movies- that the predators are hunters attracted to heat and conflict. To which end, it should be set in sub-Saharan Africa, which has plenty of both, plus fantastic geography and flora and fauna.

Or - to get away from the already-been-done jungle environment - perhaps the Middle East?

Team up Arnold with Danny Glover ;) The first Predator was awesome, the second one not so much.

I'd actually love to see a Predator film set back in older eras. Maybe see it during Samurai Wars or even the Civil War.

I did think about that, but I think it would only really work as an exploitation horror movie (Predator kills American soldiers in a country they are occupying), or some other politically heavy-handed allegory. Also, I don't think there is anything innately wrong with revisiting the jungle. It gives the best visual representation of pred's cloaking device. But if we want some fresh terrain, then how about savannah?

Absolutely. Predators through history. In the middle of a war, men from both sides realise they are ultimately on the same side - humans against alien hunters.

Predators are incredibly flexible. You can have them from the dawn of time all the way 'till the end of time and you can still craft a believable story. Anyway, Paul Verhoeven needs to start directing Predator 3 yesterday.

That sounds interesting. Creating new environments for them to interact in would be a writer/filmmaker's dream. Quite a challenge, but perhaps you are right in stating that Studio execs didn't foresee it as a plausible way to collect on the only thing they're concerned with. Seriously, when marketing departments are controlling what is given the green light or canned, I'm shocked when great films are made. Is film really even considered as an art medium on the majority of projects anymore?

The problem is that the storylines were dumbed down and corners were cut by having the action take place on modern-day Earth. Lame.
That's very irritating. Audiences have been going to movies for years; why do visual mediums always need detailed explaining? Francis Coppola said that contemporary films are too formulaic because they don't challenge the viewer to think and determine. So many of the latest releases prove him true and from the sound of your AVP description, those films are the same way.

Since the AvP series has been screwed up so severely at this point, it seems like a return to solo series is the only way to go.
Hopefully they get it right this time. Sci-Fi films like these have so much potential t creatively awe the viewer. Oh wait: Fox is in charge.:(:down

So last we heard, Neil Marshall was one of seven contenders according to AICN to direct the Alex Litvak penned reboot PREDATORS, based on Robert Rodriguez’s treatment.

LatinoReview has exclusively learned that director Nimród Antal, not only is he one of the seven names, but is also the top contender and the guy most likely to get the gig.

Who?

I said the same damn thing. Then found out he directed Sony’s ARMORED and VACANCY.

Don’t know how far the negotiations have gone but I fully expect Harry Knowles to ask Robert Rodriguez if there is any truth to my story.

That being said, keep in mind when I said the same thing about Jackie Earle Haley being Freddy, the producer denied my story until it ultimately ended up true.

Robert Rodriguez is the producer on the PREDATORS movie so if negotiations just started, keep in mind like it has time after time this past year, "THAT PRODUCERS LIE".

AVP dead, Good
Predator 3, Not Good

The dude's name is "Nimrod"? That's all kinds of awesome.:word:

Predator 3- good....

Predator 3- controlled by Fox...not good.

My thoughts exactly.

I hold the original Predator so high on my list of badass ness. Its probably right there after Terminator 2.
