I also have some issues with the way the media presents the issue. I really wish this would be left in the hands of scientists. However, I also understand the urgent need to curb emissions, which have effects beyond climate change and are in no way beneficial to the environment. So it seems that politicization is a necessary evil, in this case...

This may be a coincidence, but right now, here in Iowa, we are getting hail/ice storms and thunder and lightning. By this time several years ago, we would have had 4 feet of snow.

Burrrrrr! I'm in upstate New York right now and it is freezing here! Yeah, I know what you're saying, because it's cold in some places, that totally means global warming doesn't exist...

Oh, except the United States is in a nationwide drought, the Arctic ice sheet is separating, half of the earth's species are estimated to die out within the next one hundred years, and several countries are experiencing drastic water shortages... all of this, by the way, is linked to the changing climate...

So, because it got colder where you live, that doesn't mean climate change isn't real. That sort of thinking is representative of the worst anti-intellectualism I have ever come across on this topic.

This post is truly ridiculous. 94% of scientists agree that global climate change is a real threat to the well-being of the human race, and because people actually agree with what the scientific community has to say (go figure, people in this country actually listen to scientists sometimes), you are equating them to psychotic religious extremists?

You know that icebergs... are NOT the same as an ice sheet, correct? An ice sheet takes up a considerable volume of water. An iceberg is comparable to a sliver in a hardwood floor.

The ice sheet is more important. Did you know that the Northwest Passage opened up for the first time in the history of human expedition last year? Did you know that the ENTIRE ice sheet is expected to melt by 2010 as a direct result of warming temperatures? Your "2 percent of icebergs" figure is complete and utter trash.

Unless all the icebergs in the ocean plan on getting together and forming an ice sheet in the Arctic Circle next year, the evidence you have provided me with which "discounts" climate change as a legitimate problem is worthless.

Not when natural cycles such as the greenhouse gas effect are being thrown off balance due to human development. The world isn't going to balance itself out if the greenhouse effect continues to get more intense; it is going to suffer as a result of human activity. Biodiversity will shrink significantly, the Oceans' waters may rise as much as a foot, several thousand species we currently reap the benefits of today will be gone, and our natural resources will be depleted. Then you have to worry about food shortages and water shortages, which directly impacts humanity.

That isn't a balance, that is disaster in waiting.

Awesome, and when we find out in forty years that we have wasted our planet and that there's nothing we can do about it, I'm sure you'll believe that the situation will just "balance itself out."

It most certainly does. In fact, the systems that our planet employs to balance a number of things are quite elegant.

The problem is that we're taking an established system of balance and tweaking it severely (e.g., the Carbon cycle), and while the earth most certainly WILL balance itself out, the question is whether or not it will do so quickly enough and with what consequences? The truth is that changes that we regard as insignificant or inconsequential may in fact my magnified many times by said systems of balance, and the resulting initial instability may lead to changes that we as a species (not to mention countless other species) may NOT be able to cope with. Even if we CAN, the potential for amplified effects is so great that it's not a stretch to imagine scenarios of famine and severe resource shortages.

That's the issue. Life will go on. But the potential for SEVERE consequences is very real and, frankly, scary.

The sad thing is that it IS a game to many people. It amazes me that somebody who so firmly believes that this world was placed here specifically so that WE as a species could live could take its utter desecration with such levity.

It's like taking a gift directly from God, looking him in the face and telling him, "**** you, this is mine to do with whatever I damn well please."

Yeah, that's what really gets me. IncrediNate is a Christian who claims that the Earth exists because God created it for us to enjoy its treasures, yet we have destroyed the planet to a degree where we won't even have the basic treasures we were supposed to enjoy. And instead of believing that we should conserve our resources and do everything we can to prevent this emerging climate crisis, he thinks its perfectly fine for us to go on the way we are living, trashing the Earth and ruining its ability to sustain future generations.

So, I can't be too sure... but I believe IncrediNate is sinning with these beliefs.
