CD's won't cease production. The music industry just won't sell them anymore.

DVD should stick around for a while. Not everyone has the bandwidth or internet connections to download bluray quality movies. And there's not been a huge surge to replace old DVD players.

I heard that blue ray is under performing because people are just satisfied with DVD.

GUY1 LOOKING AT DVD: Ok so it has the movie and blooper real and director commentary, and is $20.

GUY1 LOOKING AT BR: Ok so it has the movie, blooper real, director commentary, cast commentary, extra 3 minutes of never before seen footage, behind the scenes features, a documentary about the real world science of the movie, it'll make me breakfast in the morning, complements me when I feel self conscious, has the audition tapes of all the extra's in the movie(including guy that high fives the main character), I can make my own commentary, download friends commentaries, AND is better picture... all just for $45... *SHRUGS* I just want the movie.*Grabs DVD*.

GUY2: Dude... you could just download it for free.

GUY1:Even better. **** you entertainment industry.

I bought my first BluRay player a few months ago.

Mostly to stream Netflix.

I have yet to watch a BluRay on it. :p

Blu-ray is doing great. DVD will phase out, just slower than previous eras.

Honestly...I could never go back to DVD...it's like going back to VHS after seeing DVD.

I like DVD more. Then again I like older systems than the newer ones...

It took 10 years for DVD to kill VHS.

We're only entering the sixth year of BluRay.

I can't see DVD dying any time soon. BluRay may have better quality, but it's not a big enough improvement to kill DVDs.

DVD killed VHS largely thanks to computers.

Yeah, the switch from analog to digital was a huge factor in favor of DVD.

But BluRay is just a switch from digital to digital. And requires all DVD players, and DVD players in computers, to be replaced. And some (older) computers can't be switched, and are too expensive to replace (Macintosh).

Plus, the biggest benefit from BluRay comes when combined with HD TVs. And tons of people are still using old tvs because HD TV is still relatively expensive.

I'm just not sure Blue ray is that much better to warrant a real change especially at it's price point. I could see it going the way of laser disks.

Given things like netflix and itunes... and downloading in general, I imagine that all other mediums (DVD players, Blu-ray players, etc) will eventually become obsolete. Well, someone will always need hard copies, but that could be anything.

CDs are already becoming obsolete thanks to the mp3.

I love 90s technology....dislike iTunes/digital. I'm a 80 year old man like that. Love my CDs...my DVD..Blu-ray is okay.

VHS is still common in a lot of parts of the world. There are still hundreds of millions of VHS in circulation. Certainly doing better than Betamax.

Blu-Rays are better quality, but it isn't near as significant a jump from DVD as DVD from VHS. They are still essentially the same thing, just better.

Comparing a DVD to a Blu-Ray is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Porsche. Comparing a DVD to a VHS tape is like comparing a Honda Civic to a horse.

And riding a horse is badass.

Only if the media companies stop this SOPA ******** trying to protect their old business models, and actually start listening to consumer demand.

At least it's easy to record on a horse.

...wait

Well the change is inevitable. You think the horse industry didn't fight the car industry? Okay, that was a rather imperfect analogy, but I think you can see what I'm trying to say.

Blu-Ray quality completely destroys DVD. I can't even stand to look at "dvd quality" anymore...it just looks bad.

Most people don't really notice the difference enough to justify not going back to DVD, so quality won't make the transition any faster. Hell I notice the difference and I don't even care.

I don't really notice the difference that much and blue rays don't do things that DVD's can't. So unlike the change from VHS to DVD I just don't see bluerays offering something substantially better. Hey a better picture and a bit more content for twice the price? Nah. I have a blueray player and I've only ever used it over the holidays.

I agree. You'll only notice it if you have one of those ultra HD TV, and most people still don't have it due to its high price. Once every home has a HD TV, then we may see Blu ray getting more traction on the market.

I could see a lot of appeal to a more sturdy medium. Discs scratch so easily, and tapes wear out rather fast. If you could keep DVD quality (or higher) and make it more durable, that would be a real improvement.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. Not everyone has internet speeds capable of decent downloading/streaming or devices that can do it.

you can get a 40inch HDTV for like under $500 now.

Not yet. But just look at how fast broadband internet has been replacing dial-up. And there is no sign of its slowing down. In the next ten years, it will become ubiquitous.
