Disney Bringing Gargoyles To Life

Hopefully the latter reports of it being based on the cartoon are true.... if it's original, I wonder what it would be. I wouldn't wanna see some gargoyle come to life love story trying to cash in on the Twilight shtick :csad:

I guess most of the articles about the Disney Gargoyle announcement weren't that clear and bloggers got our hopes up.

Disney wants to breathe new life into gargoyles.

Zoe Green is in final negotiations with the Mouse House to pen a screenplay based on an original idea developed by Lauren Shuler Donner, who will produce the live-action film for Disney.

The project is not tied to "Gargoyles," the popular animated TV series that Disney produced in the 1990s, or a comicbook that was later produced by series creator Greg Weisman.

Instead, it centers around a world and mythology of the menacing stone statues that the studio was keen to explore, sources said. Both Disney and Shuler Donner were circling separate gargoyle projects and ultimately paired up and hired Green to tackle an idea hatched with Disney exec LouAnne Brickhouse, who is shepherding the project at the studio.
Shuler Donner will produce through the Donners' Co., which she runs with husband Richard Donner.

Project would fit in well with the high-profile projects Disney is looking to produce these days -- films that can become franchises at the megaplex and spin off popular videogames, merchandise, TV shows and theme park rides.

In addition to new installments of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "National Treasure," studio also is developing a take on "The Wizard of Oz" with Sam Raimi directing, and fable "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," with Peter Hedges helming. It also has a new film set to star the Muppets, a remake of "The Black Hole," and is revisiting "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" with David Fincher, in addition to Tim Burton's "Maleficent," a live-action feature on the sorceress from "Sleeping Beauty" with Angelina Jolie circling.

A bigscreen version of the "Gargoyles" series was being developed in 1996 with Weisman, show producer Frank Paur and Dean Devlin. But the right take never received a greenlight.

Green has a penchant for penning fantasy fare. She's written "Tigress" for Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment, based on the Disney lot. Pic follows a woman who starts getting tiger-like instincts. Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. of State Street Pictures are producers on the project.

Scribe is also tackling the script for Syfy miniseries "The Diamond Age," an adaptation of Neal Stephenson's 1995 novel "The Diamond Age: Or a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer," that George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing. She has also written for the animated series "Wolverine and the X-Men."

Meanwhile, bringing gargoyles to life wouldn't be all that strange for Shuler Donner. She's been heading Fox's "X-Men" franchise, whose pics have been packed with powerful mutants, since the first film bowed in 2000. She's currently overseeing "X-Men: First Class," that Matthew Vaughn is directing, "Deadpool," set to star Ryan Reynolds, and "X-Men Origins: Magneto."

This article pretty much sums it up best. Disney had two projects in mind, the TV series based Gargoyles and the Donner Gargoyle project and they went with Donner's idea. Strange very strange.

let me pt it that way. i will not have a problem with this movie if it is original..................and is not like a PG disney movie.

i dont want to see a movie where Miley Cyrus is the main character and her friends find statues that come to life. you know where i am going with this right?

original? why not. just make it a serious Pg13 movie. no kids BS.

At first I thought it was going to be based on the cartoon but I guess not.

I was about to say... why was this thread all the way in the bottom before I posted... then I read that...

I dont think it will be PG. I bet they target the Pirates/Harry Potter PG-13 adventures for families audience.

I do think the cartoon holds up in the same vain as Batman: The Animated Series. It has some great continuity and a great feeling of history.

Get ready for a live action Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers but with two Chippendale dancers who solve crimes.

Disney has been trying to get a Gargoyles project to fly for some time now.

The proposed film isn't tied to the animated series or the made-for-television flick of the same name. Instead, this is a new property the Mouse House hopes to exploit across various platforms - film, television, video games, theme parks, etc.

That said, Variety reports Disney has hired writers David Elliot and Paul Lovett to pen a script. They're the duo that gave us G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

Lauren Shuler Donner will produce. The film is being considered for live-action.

aroo?

Why would they make a new Gargoyles property instead of the Gargoyles that they already have?

It makes no sense. That are very passionate fans of the show and it has a build in fanbase bigger than the original movie I bet.If they were willing to revive Tron I don't see why Gargolyes shouldn't be the same.

Most disappointing deceptive headline ever.

This really makes zero sense. They already have a franchise called Gargoyles that can spawn what they want. Why not use that? What is the ****ing point in doing this? Can someone explain it to me?

Welcome to my life last year....
I have never gone from such an emotional high to a fit of anger as I just have in the last ten minutes and I place the blame solely on Disney and Comingsoon.net. It's like being told "Oh hey, honey, I'm pregnant! Isn't this great news? That settled in yet? Okay, well, just fyi, I ****ed your best friend and it's almost definitely his baby." That's how this feels. I am livid.

They fooled me into making a thread out of this crap. Eat ****, Disney! :cmad:

With Avatar/Davey Jones level motion capture, Gargoyles would easily be one of the most amazing movies of all time.

lol, As if it couldn't get any worse.

Disney: Oh... so these guys penned a mediocre adaptation of a beloved television series... PERFECT! Except this time we'll just take the name 'Gargoyles' and scrap everything else. Greate$t. Movie. Ever.

That's being awfully generous.

Simple... they didn't want to tell that particular story, but something different. So, rather than butcher the source material and turning it into something it wasn't, this they opted to make the movie unrelated to the cartoon series instead. Personally, I'd rather this than a movie that was about those Gargoyles but in name only (e.g. Double Dragon movie, anyone?). Granted, they could have chosen a different name but anything with the word 'Gargoyles' in it coming from Disney would get us all thinking about the original series anyway.
