Animation Disney's 'Moana'

When are they going to actually start showcasing Moana? So far all of the publicity has centered around Maui. We know a lot about him but almost nothing about her.

Moana is only the supporting character. :mnm:

Or Disney marketing would like to lead people to believe. :sly:

Yeah, they're doing a great job of that. So far she's pretty much done nothing in the trailers except react to Maui. Why is that the only thing they're showing?

Name a movie Moana. Have a character named Moana that is ostensibly about her. Mainly showcase the oversized co-star (in every sense) instead of the actual star. Confuse the hell out of your potential audience.

I guess because it's Dwayne Johnson who is really big (especially as a name) they want to focus on him to the detriment of the actual star of the movie.

When is this released? Is it too early for long range tracking? I think Disney have high hopes for this to carry on their streak.

This is the same strategy that Disney has been employing since Tangled. Basically they figure that they have girl audiences in the bag and so instead focus the trailers around the male lead to try to pull in other audiences.

This is coming out November of THIS year right? I'm seeing more promotion for Trolls than this film.

^ Nope. End of December.

EDIT: Wait no you're right, in most countries it does come out in November. Unsurprisingly, mine is not one of them.

It's marketing. Little girls are going to see this movie regardless, because the Disney-princess vibe is there regardless of which character gets screen time in the commercials. They need to get little boys to want to see this movie too, so in order to do that, the marketing needs to focus on the big action-hero guy with The Rock's voice.

Because no way in hell little boys can identify with a female character. Yuck. Cooties.

It's like studio heads think like children.

Well, it is what it is. There are probably some little boys that are talking about Moana, but their parents are probably a little more....open minded, I would say.

It might not be politically correct, but it's pretty damn true. Boys by and large won't consume properties that are perceived as being girl-centred, while the opposite is less true. If Harry Potter was a girl, would that franchise have the same following? When was the last time you saw a boy at a con or at Halloween dressed up as Kristoff from Frozen? When you're Disney, you've got to go with the option that makes the most money.

I've seen rule 63 Elsa and Anna cosplays. Does that count? :hmm

:funny: I assume by the use of the terms "rule 63" and "cosplay" that the hypothetical boys in question are a little older and campier than the ones Disney wants to mass market to.

I can see that Disney wants to pitch to boys, but so far they're pretty much doing that exclusively. We have seen pretty much nothing that showcases just Moana except for one short clip. Everything else, including the song today, is all about her reacting to Maui. Why didn't we hear HER singing a song before we saw him do it?

I am actually getting kind of sick of Maui. I hope they start showing us some other characters soon.
