Okay what was the better movie of 2009? They were both hyped. Both of them are movies where the human race is pitted against extra terrestrials, and humans are the bad guys. Both were excellent movies.

What did we like better?

I checked with the mods first to make sure it was okay for me to start this thread, because I know we already have two avatar threads and a District 9 thread.

I really liked District 9, but I prefer Avatar. Just more along a visual & action standpoint, but District 9 had more meat to the story.

yeah I think the story was better too in district 9 but it wasn't as impactful as Avatar. I wasn't captivated at the same level, which is by no means a stab at district 9, because it too was very captivating.

It's sad all that talk about how awesome it was a original, thought-provoking sci-fi film had been done on a cheaper budget in the age of overbloated CG budgets. Fast-forward six months and some people are falling all over themselves for exactly what they derided months earlier.

It's like people have the memories of goldfish sometimes.

I donn't really see that happening. Only two people had posted in the thread before you, and neither one of us did that. we both think district 9 was awesome.

District 9 was the best movie this year, by far. One of the greatest movies ever made IMO.

I'll wait until after I see D9 before I vote on this poll. Just wish that Netflix isn't so backlogged with D9 queue that I can't get the chance to see it yet.

District 9 was my second favorite movie this year, behind Avatar.

I think it is great when films can succeed with a low budget. That doesn't mean I think large budget films are stupid. I really don't care either way. I just want a good movie.

And we both thought Avatar was good too, so I don't know what the point is supposed to be. I think I posted a handful of times in the District 9 thread, and don't think I rode that "Most original thing evah" horse.

District 9 was the most emotional movie of year. I swear, it better get a best pic nod.

1-I wasn't talking about this thread.I was talking about the overall comments.

2. I love big, dumb action films. I have no problem with Avatar getting praised, but we know Hollywood will always make Avatars so when people go around trumpeting Cameron for Oscars(besides VFX) and such it irks me. We should be encouraging the nominations for Moon and D9 type films.

Wow I saw some of it while sneaking into a theater.. It looked good, but it didnt feel as good as Avatar or Startrek to me.

I will have to catch all of it on DVD or BlueRay, alot of my friends liked it though. They still think Avatar is the best movie of the decade and ST09 was second best of the year.

How was the ending CelticPred for D9?

Well, I thought Moon was good, but it's not quite there with District 9 and Avatar.

It wasnt really close in my opinion, im shocked its tied so far.

District 9 was 10000000 times better then Avatar. I love both, but D-9 had a great story, more original then Avatar's, better acting, and it wasnt entirly predictible.

It was very emotional....Avatar was very "You should feel this because you should"...not that being that is a bad thing...but i'm just saying.

Well, Moon wasn't brought up in this topic or the above poll, the author intended it to be a discussion between District 9 over Avatar.

I voted District 9 but I really like Avatar too

Eh, here is something worthy of a good, civil debate. I thought both films were highly derivative of the whole "Going Native" theme. The main difference is Jake is more willingly converted, and Wikus is like a character in a Twilight Zone episode because he transforms by accident and is thrown into all kind of flip-flopped my friend is now my enemy, and my old enemy is my new friend" king of way. Wikus was also pretty cowardly, in an Ash Williams kind of way, because eventually he balls up and does the right thing. Jake was much more welcoming of his body (for obvious reasons) and aggressive in his Alien form, and much more so once he turns.

While District 9 had a more original handling of the "going native" plot, Avatar was much more of an enjoyable film experience. I also didn't find the characters as "cardboard" and plot "thinner than Kate Moss" as others did. It was cliched, no doubt, but that doesn't automatically make it a bad film.
