i don't know for a fact that is how they know in this case, but that is a method i've heard of before.

Not really. You just need to find people who you can as Danalys said be traced back to him and look at their genes. And since the Mongols practice was to consider any kid popped out by a guy as a legitimate heir ol' Temujin had many decendants. But the primary heirs of Temujin formed states (The Golden Horde, the Yuan dynasty of China, The Chaghatayid
Khâns of Mughulistân, and The Il Khâns ) who's geneologies are known.
