I lucked out, and got the PS3 without BW/C so, I had to keep my PS2.

I can play silver-lined discs, but whenever I pop in a bnlue disc (ala Lego SW) I get disc read error. Do I need a new one?

Since your PS2 is probably really old and you won't mind voiding the warranty, just open it up and clean the lens inside. It is extremely simple. I did it just before I sold my PS2 for a 360 (and because I kept getting disc read errors), and I was a little pissed because it made it work so much better.

If that doesn't fix it, then yeah you need a new one.

Wasn't some japanese tech company creating some kind of converter thing for the ps3 so we could play PS2 games? ....whatever happened to that?

Awesome. Thanks :woot:

Yeah, cleaning the lense revives what would otherwise be a dead system. Though a pro of using homebrewed stuff for me is that the laser isn't used anymore at all.
