Do You Think After-Credits-Scenes are Marvel's Territory?

First off, I want to say I'm a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's arguably my favorite modern movie series, therefore this is NOT in any way a jab at Marvel.

I know there are many movies that do not use after-credits scenes, but I'd like to look at three cinematic universe-style movies that have come out recently: Rogue One, Wonder Woman, and the remake of The Mummy (I love Rogue One and I haven't seen either of the last two). I don't know Wonder Woman's rationale for not having an after credits scene, but both Rogue One and The Mummy used the excuse that after-credits scenes are Marvel's thing.

This kind of rubs me the wrong way because I never have (and still don't) equate post-credits scenes with Marvel, at all. Sure, Marvel uses post-credits scenes (and has created a unique application for them), and they make more films a year than most movie series' so it may be more noticeable; but I grew up with movies that used after-credits scenes long before Marvel started. Many Pixar movies (and animated movies in general) had cute scenes after the credits, heck even the first Transformers (which came out a year before Marvel started) had after-credits scenes that are very similar to what Marvel does today. Wikipedia even gives a history of post-credits scenes, and it pretty much dates back to the beginning of cinema:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-credits_scene

On a side note, I don't think there's anything wrong with not having an after-credits scene, but I'd argue leaving it out can be a missed opportunity. (sort of like what I said about credits songs in another discussion).

Anyway, what do you all think? Are credits-scenes a Marvel thing, or not?

Post-credit sequences used to be short, fun additions to a movie.

But the way Marvel Studios uses them, to tease upcoming movies, they can have that all for themselves. Most of the times they're forced and uninteresting. James Gunn did an awesome job on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though. But he kept it all in context. No teasers about Spider-Man or anything else.

Studios should focus more on what's in the movie itself, rather than what they could possibly do in sequels and spin-offs. One step at a time.

Disney has used them in animated films, as well. Winnie the Pooh and Froze are the two in particular I can think of. I think anyone can do it if they want, but it would feel out of place in Star Wars.

Even some of the Marvel ones should've just been in the movie instead of the credits.

I also prefer movies to be as self contained as possible, although I don't mind a setup for a future movie here or there, as long as it's done sparingly.

I wouldn't want an after-credits scene in a main Star Wars movie, but I think the spinoffs could stand to have them. Rogue One already played with the formatting by eliminating the crawl and whatnot, I was actually slightly disappointed that they didn't do anything differently for the credits, like a scene or even a song. (I loved the movie though, it's really just a minor nitpick.)

Definitely not. Post-credits scenes have been done for decades. A bunch of classics from the 80s had them, most famously Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Exactly. I grew up with post-credits scenes long before I even heard of the MCU, I'm actually pretty surprised so many people think of them as a Marvel thing.

Nope, they were a thing long before the MCU even existed.

The first one that I remember seeing was at the end of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The first one that I remember was in Airplane! with the guy in Striker's cab at the beginning of the movie still sitting there waiting for him to come back.

They're not Marvel's thing although Marvel has sort of perfected the art of using them to tease future movies. I'm not sure who started that trend.

My only problem with Marvel post-credits is they are usually at the very end, which means the audience needs to be there, watching the credits roll.

They should be in the middle of it

I'm not a huge fan of post credits stuff anyways, now if the whole credits is a scene like inland empire then its different. I already have to sit through half a dozen or more trailers before the movie...don't feel like sitting around even longer once it's done.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it, I like it when movies do something unique with the credits like GOTG 2 did, so they're interesting to watch.

People think the advertising element of the post-credits scene is a Marvel thing.

Ah, that makes more sense.

They didn't start with Marvel, but now they've been so identified with that studio, that if you're going to do one, it better be good.

Personally, I wouldn't mind end credits with the cast singing

Nope. Even modern franchises like Fast and the Furious and Pirates of the Caribbean did it before Marvel.

Even that's not true. For example, The Matrix Reloaded did it back in 2003.

No, plain and simple. Why is this even a thread?

I just created it because I've seen more and more people implying that after-credits scenes are a Marvel-exclusive thing recently (not necessarily on this site, just in general) and I just find that kind of odd. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that the majority of people replying here realize that post-credits scenes predate the MCU (and were used semi-frequently before then).
