Do you think James Cameron is over-rated?

I started talking about this in the Terminator Salvation thread but I decided to start a new thread so I wouldn't derail that one. I am a firm believer that Jame's Cameron is over-rated and the passing of time seems to have made him seem like a much better director then he really is. I'll go through his popular films and give my reasons

1. Terminator: A good movie that does well as a futuristic 80's movie. I doubt it'd be considered the classic that it is if there was no T2. I think if Terminator stood alone it wouldn't be considered on the same level as other sci-fi classics like Blade Runner

2. Aliens: This was one of his better films and I do think it deserves the hype it gets.

3. The Abyss: Long, boring, self-rightous story-telling. The directors cut is even worse. It's just one of those movies that thinks it's more important than it is and a lot of what would be called "suspense" I call drawn-out and boring.

4. Terminator 2: Now this is a classic, it dates itself in some ways but almost every movie does. This is the movie that redefined action and sci-fi films.

5. True Lies: Dumb action movie that tries to hard to put comedy in every scene it can. Now I get why some of you may like this movie, it's kinda fun, Jamie Lee Curtis was hot, nice action. But if this film was made by someone like Steven Sommers all that would be talked about is how dumb it is and what a crappy director Sommers is. But for some reason Cameron can get away with it.

6. Titanic: I said in the other thread that this movie was part of a histeria that caused everyone to go see it. It was always highly over-rated, shouldn't have been nominated for best picture, and really poorly acted. I never had one emotional responce to anyones death in this film which is sad cause the real tale of the Titanic is a tragedy.

So in 25 years Cameron has directed 6 films that people know him for, and in my opinion, only 2 of those are worth the praise they get. I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on this.

I disagree with you on a number of the negatives you said.

Only one I slightly agree with you on is Titanic. It had young Leo to bring in all the little girls for repeat viewings, more of a love story than a tragedy, plus a big hit song(Celion Dion + studio control...sorry that song had manufactured for award status all over it, kind of like some films are made as Oscar bait). I found the movie alright but not nearly as great as everyone made it out to be. That and there was all the hype behind the fact that for the film Cameron literally rebuilt half-3/4 of the actual ship instead of making it all CGI.

Personally, I don't think he's overrated.

Terminator just didn't do as good as T2 in the theatres but had a good shelf life. It was a new film no one heard of and wasn't based off of anything already.

As for the Abyss, I'm chalking up your opinion to the fact that that type of film just isn't your cup of tea as opposed to actually being boring. I enjoyed that film when I was a kid back when I mainly only liked Comedys, Horror and Action films.

True Lies is probably one of the few movies that can blend comedy with action. Great moive. In fact, I want to watch it righht now.

no... but he sure as hell overrates himself...lol

Harlan Ellison disagrees.

I'm not sure how Cameron is rated to begin with to say whether he's overrated or not. I don't think anyone would argue that he's in the class of Hitchcock, Ford, Spielberg, or Coppola, directors of popular mainstream blockbusters. Nobody regards Cameron as a great art movie director.

But, within that general category, there's probably a good argument that he's certainly on the next tier with the likes of Ridley Scott and Michael Mann and above George Lucas and Michael Bay. Yeah, he probably didn't deserve a Best Director Oscar, certainly not for Titanic, but it's not like he isn't a significant director.

Seems to me that Cameron is rated fairly at present.

Never heard of Harlan Ellison before...so I looked him up.

What he claimed, just about anyone can claim for most film storys. Nothing is truly original, there's no saying that it was entirely coincidence or not.

I have greatly enjoyed every film of his that I have seen, so no, I don't think he is overrated.

the word overrated is over rated.

its like everything is overrated today. the second a lot of people like an actor or a director then someone says overrated.

Titanic was a great film... the only reason people call it undeserving and overrated is because it became a phenomenon. If Cameron had made the exact same film and somehow did it on a normal budget and it made a modest profit, and if it teenage girls didn't all become infatuated with Leo, it wouldn't get half the backlash it gets.

I don't think Cameron is overrated, personally. But I do agree that he overrates himself. He really does come off like an arrogant SOB who thinks he's greatest director of all time. I wouldn't place him in that category, but he's certainly talented.

Ellison does have the law on his side in this case. Not that it's important to the overall point.

It's true, the term is completely subjective unless you're actually referring to some sort of list. How often do you even really see people remark on how he's the best film maker? Usually if his name comes up, it's something negative.

Probably the best action movie director of all time his non action movies like Abyss and Titanic are as good as Spielbergs medicore movie list like A.I. or Minority Report.

I don't know anyone named Jame's Cameron but I do know James Cameron:p

You hated the movie yet watched the Director's cut too?

The Terminator: Really good movie

Terminator 2: Better than the first and is tied with Aliens as his best

Aliens: Loved it!

True Lies: Decent comedy but by his 'worse' film that I've seen (no, I havent seen that pirhana movie)...and it is a bit overrated. Its still a good movie though imo.

The Abyss: Loved it. I love the tone and atmosphere Cameron created it was just perfect through out the film

Titanic - Good movie...people hate it now because it made so much money and it got over exposure but I will still admit its a good movie

Although he has a very small filmography, most of his films are good (Im sure Pirhana is bad)....so overall he is a good director. Overrated? Maybe...but why does it matter.

A lot of people do that...especially if you watched a film that you heard was "good" but didn't quite like the theatrical version. I did it for Daredevil and hated the theatrical version (I still didn't like the directors cut but it is indeed slightly better)

sigh..this thread is overrated. i'm overrated.

I like most of his films, he improved the way films are made and considered but I don't know why......he's never been one of my favourite filmmakers:gray:I'm not eagerly expecting his new projects !

Not that I completely don't care (Avatar seems impressive) but I won't spend a night awake to see the brand new trailer of his movies first (a thing I can do for a Nolan Batman for instance) ! It's a weird feeling......

he's one of those directors that you like but people have to remind you of him.

"What about James Cameron?"

"Oh yeah, he's awesome."

I think it's because directs a movie every 1000 years. Hell, Terrance Malack is doing more movies than Cameron now.

I agree with what you are saying about how it's in style to hate Titanic but I never liked it so I don't fall into that camp. Thankyou for explaining why I saw the directors cut. And I started this thread because I am wondering how Avatar is such so anticipated when no footage has been shown, and he hasn't directed a movie that I think could be considered a classic in 18 years. There have been years of speculation about what his next movie was going to be after Titanic and I think the reason he waited so long and was rumored to but never commited to any project was because he knew that he couldn't live up to his own hype. I don't hate Cameron but he remindes me of George Lucas, a product of his own hype that had a couple good ideas once. The only difference is that Lucas has finally exposed himself and Cameron hasn't. I think Avatar will be that project

I think James Cameron is a good director, but I definitely agree that he's totally overrated. Terminator, T2, True Lies, Aliens, and especially Titanic, are all good movies, but that's it. Just good. I honestly could careless for Avatar. I guess we'll see when I actually see a trailer.
