The man brought us T1 and T2. He's not overrated. (I can't speak for Aliens 'cause I haven't seen it.:o)

just good movies huh?

i don't think anybody can say they care for Avatar until the trailer, so everyone is pretty much in the same boat.

I agree with what you are saying about how it's in style to hate Titanic but I never liked it so I don't fall into that camp. Thankyou for explaining why I saw the directors cut. And I started this thread because I am wondering how Avatar is such so anticipated when no footage has been shown, and he hasn't directed a movie that I think could be considered a classic in 18 years. There have been years of speculation about what his next movie was going to be after Titanic and I think the reason he waited so long and was rumored to but never commited to any project was because he knew that he couldn't live up to his own hype. I don't hate Cameron but he remindes me of George Lucas, a product of his own hype that had a couple good ideas once. The only difference is that Lucas has finally exposed himself and Cameron hasn't. I think Avatar will be that project
Well I don't think he'll be the next George Lucas. So far, everyone who has seen bits and pieces of Avatar were absolutely blown away. The movie even got big directors like Speilberg and jackson impressed.

Can I add a :wow: to that?

Im excited about it because I've been hearing that its going to be groundbreaking and as I've said people have been really impressed by the little footage they have seen.

i and i mean myself never saw people talking how he has the best acting in hes movie. i dont remember anyone saying that he told the best stories.

but i know that we a lot of times are talking how he is always making visual groudbeaking movies. he almost always had groundbreaking CGI. i htink in titanic he for the first time used CGI crowds. CGI titanic was groudnrebaking and still holds up today.
a f.... CGI villain in terminator 2? hello? combines with stan winston's props it was magic. the guy created a new camera for hes new movie. 3D that is supposed to change everything. photorealistic facial movement. if Benjamin Button wasnt realesed in december he woudl be IMO the first to brake the Unncany valley. but Fincher did this. he was smart enough to make motion capturing facial movement without those stupid dots.

i think he makes visual groudnrebaking movies. and because of that he doesnt realese movie every 3 or 4 years. h is bringing something new to the cinema .

I think you could call him a visionary.

I dont know a lot of people that "over-rate" him, I think you have to be considered one of the best to be over-rated, and I haven't seen a lot people say he's the the best or even one of the best.

A visionary, technical genius, brilliant storyteller, can be full of himself...

I'm gonna have to say no. He's great. He knows everything and despite some of my problems with him (Titanic which IS overrated as hell) He knows what he's always doing. Yes he can be harsh on his actors, but I'd rather do that than being a director who pusifies everything. He wants to make a great film, he has a vision, and in order to do that, you have to get it across. He's a better storyteller than a writer, (he has great concepts, he seamlessly weaves them in all his films) And yet his dialogue in Titanic is just bad. How did that go wrong? Was he too focued on the research of the ship?

The man deserves his success. Though he's not God. He's a filmmaking God.

I like most of his films, he improved the way films are made and considered but I don't know why......he's never been one of my favourite filmmakers:gray:I'm not eagerly expecting his new projects !

Not that I completely don't care (Avatar seems impressive) but I won't spend a night awake to see the brand new trailer of his movies first (a thing I can do for a Nolan Batman for instance) ! It's a weird feeling......

Has there been anything released to be impressed by? I swear that movie has the biggest hyped based on nothing.

Terminator 1 + 2, Aliens, True Lies --- all 10/10 movies
Titanic --- most successful movie of all times, 8/10
The Abyss --- innovative and groundbreaking 8/10
Avatar --- will probably be the most stunning movie ever

No, he is UNDERRATED. He is, after Sam Peckinpah, the best director ever. People bash Titanic and then they praise Spielberg's sentimental garbage he often pulls out?

He captures emotion, blockbuster-ness and action (probably the best action director, with John Woo).

Guys like Nolan are JOKES compared to him.

You could really say any beloved director is overrated. Kevin Smith anyone?

Do you think James Cameron is over-rated?
I'd say.. totally. I honestly think his only GREAT movie is the first Terminator.. after that, downhill.......................:down Actually, he did great again with The Abyss, but then.. downhill.. yeah, pretty much from there..

I started talking about this in the Terminator Salvation thread but I decided to start a new thread so I wouldn't derail that one. I am a firm believer that Jame's Cameron is over-rated and the passing of time seems to have made him seem like a much better director then he really is. I'll go through his popular films and give my reasons

1. Terminator: A good movie that does well as a futuristic 80's movie. I doubt it'd be considered the classic that it is if there was no T2. I think if Terminator stood alone it wouldn't be considered on the same level as other sci-fi classics like Blade Runner

2. Aliens: This was one of his better films and I do think it deserves the hype it gets.

3. The Abyss: Long, boring, self-rightous story-telling. The directors cut is even worse. It's just one of those movies that thinks it's more important than it is and a lot of what would be called "suspense" I call drawn-out and boring.

4. Terminator 2: Now this is a classic, it dates itself in some ways but almost every movie does. This is the movie that redefined action and sci-fi films.

5. True Lies: Dumb action movie that tries to hard to put comedy in every scene it can. Now I get why some of you may like this movie, it's kinda fun, Jamie Lee Curtis was hot, nice action. But if this film was made by someone like Steven Sommers all that would be talked about is how dumb it is and what a crappy director Sommers is. But for some reason Cameron can get away with it.

6. Titanic: I said in the other thread that this movie was part of a histeria that caused everyone to go see it. It was always highly over-rated, shouldn't have been nominated for best picture, and really poorly acted. I never had one emotional responce to anyones death in this film which is sad cause the real tale of the Titanic is a tragedy.

So in 25 years Cameron has directed 6 films that people know him for, and in my opinion, only 2 of those are worth the praise they get. I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on this.

if it wasn't for Cameron the Predator wouldn't have looked the way he looks....

If by James Cameron you mean Quentin Tarantino then yes he is overrated.

As for Cameron only time and more precisely "Avatar" will tell.

I think Avatar will disapoint story wise.

Technology wise, no. But I hope Cameron is smart and keeps the **** in your pants stuff until we sit down and watch the film.

The trailers shouldn't reveal much, they need to get the point across.

OMG they should reboot James Cameron!!!!11111shift+1

Aside from Titanic, I like all his films. He's a flawed writer, but what he lacks in storytelling he makes up for in sheer technical prowess.

JAMES CAMERON is JESUS CHRIST reincarnated and Everyone will find out December 18th!

I like all his stuff, aside from The Abyss, and Titanic. I just hate them both now. Used to love them when I was little...but man....

I find Blade Runner overrated, though I like what Ridley Scott was trying to do with it. The story doesn't work for me as well as The Terminator's did. True Lies is pretty good. The boy in me wants to say it's just because of Jamie Lee Curtis (:o), but more than that, it was an action/spy genre trope that made me laugh along with it. Titanic...yeah. The less said about it, the better.

I haven't seen The Abyss from beginning to end, but the clips I have seen of it look okay, if a bit boring. I'm looking forward to Avatar. While Cameron's writing can go both ways, I haven't seen a film of his yet that hasn't wowed me in the production value.

(Assuming I see a frame of Avatar before I start having grandkids...)

I respect what you are saying Wiseman, i have to disagree
i think he is not overrated

hell no, the guy gave us T2 and personallly, i freakin' love Titanic.

Has there been anything released to be impressed by? I swear that movie has the biggest hyped based on nothing.

it's based on what's reported by several people who witnessed a part of what's coming next...not much I agree, but I wanna believe we'll see something big !

Never have i seen a thread title with such blaspheme......
FOR SHAME :cmad:
