I think the thing most people say in regard to Cameron is he is overrated cause he hasn't branched out (sans Titanic...which he won an Oscar for), but I don't think it makes him overrated. You shouldn't branch out for the sake of doing so to please critics. That is how a bad film gets made. Great films have your heart and soul into them, and your work and passion are at a peak. That is why they work. Now, bad films can be made with passion too, but it is far easier to make a great film with passion than a good one without it. Cameron makes films HE wants to make. Ones he has a passion for. I say that makes him more of an artist.

Yes. T2 is classic, other than that, I just don't care much for his films.

i dont really understand all the hate (or dislike) towards Titanic, it was an amazing film

Agreed. When I watched Titanic again after years of not seeing it, I was shocked at how much I liked it. It really is a great film.

As I have stated many times, few directors can boast having directed several films as good as The Terminator, T2, Aliens, and Titanic (again, I love it!). He may have done mostly Sci-Fi films, but that definately seems to be his passion. Thus, I can't say he is overrated for sticking with it.

I can't believe I still haven't seen The Abyss.

I voted "Yes", but its a yes(ish)

I fully appreciate that he is an excellent director with numerous top drawer movies in his resume, however....

Due to the gap between Titanic and Avatar and the success of Titanic, the phenomenon of "James Cameron- Is King of the World (of direction)" has grown.... (Oh wait thats mainly his overly inflated opinion of himself)....Had Titanic not grossed the revenue it did would we still think this of him? possibly not.

His movies to date are all entertaining, True Lies is a great example of this, however its IMO forgettable. Fair play with Aliens (a great sequel to an equally great original) T1, T2 both fantastic, and to a certain level The Abyss (even though the last 30 mins of the movie is self indulgent OTT rubbish IMO) and arguably its also forgettable as a movie.

Titanic was technically awesome, exceptional effects that moved that particular area forward. The last hour is undeniably exciting and impacting. Although the overall movie is just, well....ok really.

I think James Cameron is a extremely good director. Before you see any of his movies for the first time its a pretty safe bet that it will be entertaining and enjoyable, but is he one of the greatest directors (of all time).....well IMO no. I think alot of people rate him as one, hence I believe he is over-rated.

Yes I think James Cameron is overrated.

That does not mean hes a bad director nor an asset to visual effects. But he is treated like gods gift to film-making.

I think people think he's overrated because the fanboys on here go all ape**** over him and that leads to people wanting to think the same as them when they go to watching his films.

James Cameron brought us Aliens, Terminator and Terminator 2. He is a god. Do not deny it.

me either... its one of those benjamin button movies where you keep pushing it back for later lol
what ? you are going to tell me that in the last 15 years you were never at home infront of the TV when Abyss was on? :hehe:

I haven't seen it either. I've seen pieces of it. That's really the only Cameron film I haven't seen.

I'll openly admit, Avatar looks like complete ****.

James Cameron, overrated? Fine, then let it all hang out. Martin Scorsese is overrated, too. So's Clint Eastwood. Hey, let's just put Peter Jackson on the overrated list while we're at it. Cameron may be something of a *****e, as a human being, but as an artist, his work is in no way, overrated, even though I could do without Titanic.

-so sayeth the mastermind-

I don't think Cameron is overrated at all. He is one of the great visionary film maker. That said as much as I enjoy Cameron's take, I think Alien is much better than Aliens.(just my opinion).

I prefer Alien as well, but Aliens is just as good. He did it in the most brilliant way possible. He took what he loved and was interested in in the first film and did his own thing. That's how you do a sequel. And the result is probably my favorite Cameron film.

Aliens
T2
T1
True Lies
Titanic

Would you ask God if he was overrated? :o
