i'll get **** for this, but the longest year took some of the weaknesses of the original and improved on them. very satisfied with the 2005 remake.

I love the Fly, and The Thing, but I've not seen the originals, so can that count for this thread?

Oceans is utter self indulgent crap, if the remake is that 'good' I fear for the originals.

I love the Al Pacino/De Palma version, but I haven't seen the original so I can't really compare.

De Palma's Scarface is very much different from the 1930's Scarface, however it does borrow certain elements from the original (the world is not enough, falling for the boss' girl, certain lines in the film) that makes me very comfortable in saying that De Palma's Scarface is a remake. If you like 1930s gangster films in any way, the original Scarface is definately worth checking out.
