Haha yep. I’m so glad Doom came back and turned into a mainstream success with tech specs/production standards as good as any modern game. Long may it continue.

Yeah. I just finished reading the book Masters of Doom which is all about the people who came up with it and it’s given me a whole new appreciation for it

The original doom. Geez it was well written. The perfect book for our times really. Really helped me understand a lot, not just about situations like the cyberpunk 2077 one but lots of different things

Nice. I think I’d be up for reading that. On a separate note, does it say much about happened with John Carmack afterwards?

Yeah quite a fair bit. Both carmack and Romero actually. Anyway I would definitely love to read more books about gaming. I think there’s one called ask iwata out there that looks interesting

Nice. Was very interesting when Microsoft bought Bethesda and Carmack expressed interest in reengaging with his old titles.

it’s interesting, I have a theory the reason why marvel let themselves get bought out by Disney, other than because of the truckloads of cash, was to try to get their IPs back. I wonder if carmack is also considering this? Imagine going into discussions with the might of Microsoft behind you

I mean what old IPs are you referring to? What IPs did id Software lose? The big ones are Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein, and maybe Commander Keen? Wolfenstein did go to other studios, but the IP is still part of id's parent company.

If you mean John Carmack, that's not really the same thing. A more appropriate comparison would be Stan Lee coming back to work on all his old creations again.

I really respect the id founders for how forward thinking they were and they did a lot of impressive things in a short amount of time. Not to mention, they went open source on all their game code. No matter what happens, the coding of the original id Software Golden Age will last forever.

To be fair I haven’t heard any more on it since the Bethesda acquisition was announced and Carmack put out a tweet expressing interest. Obviously anything could be happening behind the scenes and also could happen in future, but as of yet I don’t think anything has happened.

Yep, they are a pillar of gaming and the foundation of first person shooters. They will always live on in history for their efforts. I’m so glad Doom has been brought into the modern age and is a big deal again.
