It seems that Spider-Man 3 is doomed. How do I know this? Because this weekend, Tobey and Kirsten are hosting a Comedy Central special to promote the movie. It's an automatic death sentence in the movie industry. No film to ever cross-promote with Comedy Central has ever achieved critical success. In fact, health professionals advise that pregnant and nursing women not even enter a theater playing one of these movies.

Among the films to fail miserably as a result of the Comedy Central special are Benchwarmers, Employee of the Month and Let's Go To Prison. And scientists have proven that the longer the promotion, the worse the fate of the movie. This was proved with the tragic "Fantastic 4th of July Weekend" of 2005.

Sorry, Spidey fans. Looks like SM3's gonna fail miserably and kill the careers of everyone involved. Such a shame.

This is in fact a joke. While this pattern has proved quite true over the years, I don't believe that SM3 will follow it. Just pointing out a funny occurrence. Please don't respond with angry posts, please. :p

Correlation is not causation. Just because other movies failed, doesn't mean that the Comedy Central special causes the movies to fail. They failed because they sucked. (I know you were just joking, I just wanted to say this though). I bet Spider-Man 3 will do better than Spider-Man 2.

That's kind of weird that they go from promoting those derp "comedies" to a huge blockbuster like SM3

The fact that he was joking was obviously not lost on you or I, but I bet that this thread unfolds into a pretty funny thing.

All jokes aside, I really think you are right and it will do better than Spider-Man 2. First, ticket prices are higher than in 2004. I checked my SM2 ticket and it is $1.50 less than the tickets are selling for now. Second, tickets are already selling out. The 12:01 showing at my local googleplex is sold out already and they are selling tickets at a good clip for the matinees on Friday.

I'm a psych major, so I'm well-versed in the differences between correlation and causation (and part of the joke was implying that there could be causation in that direction). But you gotta admit, it is interesting that Comedy Central only chooses/is able to promote such crappy movies. There's obviously no causation, but before SM3, the correlation coefficient was 1.0 :p

Again, all jokes aside, Comedy Central is now huge. It is broadcast in many European cities now. The network has an enormous demographic. Since it's a Viacom company, once it's on CC, it can be broadcast whole or in part on any other Viacom network, like MTV. Plus, CC is huge on the web. Shows and clips are re-broadcast millions of times. It is the smartest move for Sony.

*cigar falls out of mouth* Who did what to the who now?

I'm a psych major too! LOL :yay:

Now, tell that to all the morons who think that a change in cast is a movie's automatic death sentence.

:sarcasm on:

Gosh! If Benchwarmers and Employee of the Month failed, how does Spider-Man 3 even stand a chance!

:sarcasm off:

My original post was obviously a joke, but now I'm sort of embarassed because it ended up being kinda true. The Comedy Central Special curse continues on!

This thread is obsolete. The special came and went, and as it seems Spidey 3 is doing pretty good for itself. :)

I don't know whether to laugh or feel sorry for the guy that started this thread.
