Dreamfall: The Longest Journey sequel

Dreamfall Chapters production to be funded by Kickstarter

Dreamfall Chapters is the long-awaited return of a classic adventure game series, so you've probably already guessed that it'll be funded by Kickstarter.

"We will be doing a Kickstarter," creator Ragnar Tørnquist told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "Not right now, but we will be doing it in the near future, simply because although we received a grant from the Norwegian Film Institute, which was announced today, that is only for the preproduction phase. That allows us to get started on a prototype but in order to fully develop Dreamfall Chapters we're going to need more money and we will be going to Kickstarter."

The new studio working on Dreamfall Chapters, Red Thread Games, will be "completely independent of Funcom," Tørnquist said, though Tørnquist will continue to work as creative director on The Secret World for Funcom, and the two companies will share revenue from Dreamfall.

I've only played the sequel, but I loved it. I really need to get around to the first one.

Same. But it's hard to find the first one where I'm at. I do hope this sequel to them both get's made though.

No, you're not dreaming, that's an actual work-in-progress screenshot from Ragnar Tornquist and Red Thread Games' Dreamfall Chapters. Beyond the single screen, the Red Thread website provided a handful of details about the long-awaited continuation of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

The game will return to the magical city of Marcuria some time after Dreamfall: The Longest Journey took place, and "things have changed." Exactly how they've changed is something Red Thread is keeping secret for now.

Furthermore, the game will take place across multiple seasons, with the new screenshot representing autumn. And that's really all we know for the moment, though Red Thread promises "tons more very soon."

The Longest Journey creator Ragnar Tørnquist opens up in Reddit AMA

by Jessica Conditt (1 day ago)

Ragnar Tørnquist, the creator of The Longest Journey adventure game saga and founder of Red Thread Games, is answering all the leftover questions from his mind-numbing puzzles with an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit, right now. Tørnquist and Red Thread have a live Kickstarter for Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey, a continuation of the Dreamfall tale that's been rooting around development for six years. If all goes as planned and the Kickstarter raises $850,000, Dreamfall Chapters is scheduled to launch on PC in November 2014.

If you have a question for Tørnquist, check out the AMA thread on Reddit, but be warned, hackmed already asked the most important question: "How the hell did you guys come up with that rubber ducky puzzle?"

Dreamfall Chapters stretch goals to be Mac, Linux releases, possibly Ouya, Steam Box

The Kickstarter campaign for Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey is getting initial stretch goals for Mac and Linux versions in addition to PC, and potentially ones for Steam Box and Ouya too. Speaking in yesterday's Reddit AMA, series creator Ragnar Tørnquist confirmed Mac and Linux are to be the first additional platforms unlocked by achieving stretch goals, with iOS and Android stretch goals "definitely" in line beyond that. Tørnquist said he'd also love to bring the adventure game to Steam Box and Ouya, but only listed them as possibilities, while next-gen consoles would come after all of the other platforms, and even then wouldn't be a "focus area" for his team.

When pushed about other stretch goals, Tørnquist indicated they'd be based around additional content like side stories and returning characters. He also hinted at "a pretty huge stretch goal" by cough-dropping the acronym 'TLJH.' Tørnquist mentioned TLJH earlier in the AMA when asked about the different challenges in making a 3D game as opposed to a 2D one, saying cryptically, "2D is easier, in a lot of ways. I'd like to go back to 2D again. We have had discussions. There are ideas. TLJH."

Stretch goals are likely to play a big part for Dreamfall Chapters, given that the fundraiser sits at just over $600,000 of its $850,000 target at the time of writing, with 26 days left to go. An update on the Kickstarter page says developer Red Thread Games will divulge more on the stretch goals once it's in "battling range" of the $850K finish line, so expect them to be revealed shortly.

Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey's Kickstarter fundraising drive has accumulated more than $1 million of crowd-sourced capital, with 15 days still left to go before the campaign comes to an end. Having reaching this stretch goal, developer Red Thread Games plans to add "new characters, locations and things for players to do, see, interactive with and talk to" in Chapters' two works, Stark and Arcadia.

The Norwegian developer also recently updated its Kickstarter with the above video, an in-engine look at "Europolis," a dystopian, crime-filled city that appears to be home to the world's most successful umbrella salesman. Continue Reading

In the final week of their Kickstarter campaign, Red Thread have released the first proper trailer for Dreamfall Chapters. It (re-)introduces everyone to the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia, and also attempts to break the record for number of times a narrator says “dream”, or some variation thereof, in a three minute period. It stops just short of chanting “dreamy dreaming dreamer dreams dreams.

I'm playing through the original that started it all right now. It's really wordy for an adventure game. If you want mountains of text and a crazy amount of spoken dialogue, then this is what you want. As for how it plays, eh, I'm not too engaged by anything other than the cool setting and world building. It's easy but tedious and somewhat poorly paced for a point-and-clicker. I still prefer Broken Sword, for example, to this original. It's iffy if I'll make it to playing the new Dreamfall.

Do you mean the very first in the series? yeah that makes sense with the pacing.

The Longest Journey (the one before this up coming one) how ever was on consoles and I remember besides my self playing that a lot of people loved it both reviewers and gamers. I think mostly for the exploration part of it, more then anything.

The developers at Red Thread Games have a talent for crafting scummy futuristic places that you really, really want to visit. They did it with both The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, and they’re reusing the classic formula again in Dreamfall Chapters. This latest gameplay footage of the Kickstarter-funded sequel shows off a sinister section of Prague.

more on a previous story that was mentioned earlier.

Dreamfall Chapters Developer Aiming To Release The Game On Wii U. July 25, 2013 . 8:30am

“Nintendo approached us last autumn, immediately after Dreamfall Chapters was announced—they were, in fact, the first console manufacturer to do so,” says lead developer Ragnar Tørnquist.

Last month, Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey’s lead developer, Ragnar Tørnquist, revealed that the game is headed to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, in addition to the PC. At the time, Tørnquist said that a Wii U release was uncertain, but that the studio was going to get the game running on the platform and check for market possibilities.

Speaking with Edge Online more recently, Tørnquist revealed that the studio is in fact aiming to release Dreamfall Chapters on the Wii U, complete with GamePad support. In fact, Nintendo were the first of the three console manufacturers to get in touch with the developer.

“Nintendo approached us last autumn, immediately after Dreamfall Chapters was announced—they were, in fact, the first console manufacturer to do so,” Tørnquist shared. “At that point, however, we weren’t ready to make any commitments regarding engine and platforms, so we decided to wait. We got back in touch with Nintendo in late May of this year, and they were very interested in working with us.”

He added, “So far, they’ve been very helpful and supportive, and it’s been a painless and surprisingly rapid process.”

I've never been one for the "adventure games are dead" argument, but blimey, there sure are a lot of them on the horizon. Thanks to Kickstarter and the gentle milking of nostalgia glands, we're not only getting new adventures from Double Fine and Revolution, but also the creators of The Longest Journey. Red Thread's Dreamfall Chapters is still in pre-alpha stage, meaning backers will have to use Other Game on PC for a while longer. To ease the wait, though, here's a half-hour walkthrough of the game's Friar's Keep prison escape.

Dreamfall Chapters Is Now An Episodic Game, Due To Scheduling Problems. June 27, 2014 . 11:01am

Dreamfall Chapters is being turned into an episodic game once more, Red Thread Games have announced

Dreamfall Chapters is being turned into an episodic game once more, Red Thread Games have announced. This decision, the developer said, is the result of the unpredictable nature of game development.

When it was originally conceived in 2007, the sequel to Dreamfall was to be released as an episodic title published by Funcom. After the project was re-imagined in 2012, the episodic format was dropped, but the “Dreamfall Chapters” name was kept.

However, Red Thread Games say in an update on their Kickstarter page, “the story we’re telling has turned out to be bigger and more ambitious than first envisioned.”

The update continues: “We’re not on track to meet the release date we estimated a year and a half ago, and we’ve had to take a long, hard look at our schedule and budget. After much internal debate and careful consideration, we’ve decided to return to the episodic format.”

As a result, this Autumn, Dreamfall Chapters Book One: Reborn—the first of five planned episodes—will be released for PC, Mac and Linux. All Kickstarter and Paypal backers will receive all five episodes free of charge, and new customers will be able to purchase a season pass for the game via Steam, GOG and the Humble Store.

A more in-depth explanation regarding just why Dreamfall Chapters has moved to an episodic format can be found here.

Red Thread Games have released a new trailer for Dreamfall Chapters Book One: Reborn, the first of five episodes that will constitute the Dreamfall Chapters story.

Over on Twitter, creator Ragnar Tørnquist stated: “Okay, this is a pretty good trailer. Almost two minutes of scenes from Dreamfall Chapters Book One. And still SO much we’re not showing.”

He added in another tweet: “Also, the trailer has some cool little clues & easter eggs. Some won’t make sense until later books, but some might be obvious already…”

The announcement that Dreamfall Chapters is now an episodic game was made earlier this week. Red Thread say that scheduling and budget issues led to the decision, and you can read about it in more detail here.

Dreamfall Chapters On Console Is A Timed Exclusive, Developer Confirms. August 15, 2014 . 9:59am

Red Thread Games have confirmed over Twitter that Dreamfall Chapters on console is a timed exclusive for PlayStation 4.

This isn’t really very surprising, but Red Thread Games have confirmed over Twitter that Dreamfall Chapters on console is a timed exclusive for PlayStation 4.

“PS4 gets Dreamfall Chapters first. After that we’re open to porting to any & all platforms if we can afford it,” the developer said in a reply to Twitter users enquiring about platform exclusivity.

They explained in a follow-up tweet, “We’re small and need to focus on one console platform for now. It’s a timed exclusive.”

Dreamfall Chapters will launch on PC, Mac and Linux this Fall. Following that, the game will be released on PlayStation 4. Red Thread have also said they’re interested in bringing the game Xbox One and Wii U at some point in time.

Red Thread also appear to be considering creating a Wii U game. In a tweet, they shared, “We would love to make a WiiU game. Something that fits the platform better than Dreamfall Chapters. We have some ideas!”
