Why has this pejorative term become so popular lately? Sounds like everyone is using it all the time now.

Probably for the same reason most similar phrases catch on. A easy way to dismiss something, without having to go into detail. We are lazy like that.

Ex. - Back in early 2015 during all the talk of hacking and info being released, the Hype was a real dumpster fire.

Same way that idiots all over the world say their Facebook was "hacked" when they really either left it open at work or somebody posted something from their phone. As Darth said, people are lazy. I'll also add most people are stupid.
