Sci-Fi Dune

Science ficiton, science fantasy, or alien movies.
There is zero reason to do that, so I'd remain extremely skeptical until it's proven.

Does it matter ? Wouldn’t change the character one way or the other.

It doesn't matter to me personally but if you are truly being faithful to the book which Denis has said he's doing it makes no sense.

That report might not be entirely accurate (that woman has been spotted in shooting locations so she might have a role in the movie) since the source isn't very reputable (never seen that site before). So take that news with a grain of salt.

Exclusive: Denis Villenueve's Dune Film to Gender Swap Liet Kynes - Bounding Into Comics

While Kynes will be gender-swapped, her role in the upcoming film appears to be the same. She will still be an Imperial Ecologist and act as the Judge of the Change as control of the planet Arrakis is handed over to House Atreides. Not only that, but Kynes will be the mother of Zendaya’s Chani. Readers of the book know that Chani is the lover and eventual concubine of Paul Atreides. She also bears his children. As to who could be playing Liet Kynes, my source speculates it will be actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster. She is credited on IMDB as having a role in Dune, but they don’t detail which specific role she is playing. Duncan-Brewster previously portrayed Senator Pamlo in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and plays Fran Baxter in Years and Years. She also played Maggie Cain in Doctor Who.
Why? Why does Hollywood feel the need to do this?

One can be faithful to a source material without being pedantic.

(((

I hope it's not true.

Meh, as far as concessions to political correctness go, this is small potatoes. Not a hill worth dying on. Or, better put, not a sand dune worth dying on.

I'm calling fake news on this report until an official source confirms it otherwise. I do see Sharon Duncan-Brewster playing Shadout Mapes though.

I don't see the point of gender-swapping Liet Kynes, but whatever. I don't see it being a big success anyway :)

I would be interested in seeing Feyd being played by a female actor and be able to mercilessly beat Paul pretty easily through out their fight until the end. That would make for an incredibly interesting dynamic and tension between the two characters. An actress built enough with an imposing presence that Paul finds extremely intimidating. It would be a really interesting change up. I doubt they would go for that but I would love to see a similar protagonist to antagonist set up akin to this like in a Bond movie. Few films have done this like T3 or MOS and only MOS did a decent enough job of it

Interesting idea, but Feyd really should be male. He's kind of a take on evil Aryan warrior perfection.

Yeah. Plus, it would essentially make the Baron straight because he’d be drooling over a woman the whole time.

Have you read the novels? Gender very much matters in this universe. The Fremen in particular would never have a female leader. Doing so would require their entire culture to be re-written.

I don't remember if this line was in the book but in the mini-series Stilgar was impressed with Jessica's powers and then says "imagine what a man could do with it"

The Bene Gesserit being female and Paul being a male are also integral to the story. This is not a story that invites gender-swapping. It's meant to be based on past and present societies so bringing in this Woke nonsense would make no sense.
It is a patriarchal society where men find power more easily, for sure. But there is nothing to indicate a woman being in a leadership position is unreasonable (the Fremen do bow to their Reverend Mothers, after all), nor would accepting that element change any of the dynamics of the story, characters, or their relationships. It sounds like people who inexplicably against this are projecting their own ideals into this story.

The Bene Gesserit and Paul retaining their genders are in fact more important to the story and their characters. As you will notice, their genders have been maintained and Liet Kynes is neither Paul or a Bene Gesserit.

It is so long since i read dune that i can't remember specifics. Nothing comes to mind of any reason they can't gender change liet. Or race change for that matter, although probably should look middle eastern.
