Sci-Fi Dune

Okay. Time to decide. Who pulled off the look better?

I know nothing about Dune at all. Never read the novel or saw the original film. But I like a lot of the cast and crew involved with this one, and those stills look great. Can anyone fill me in on the basic premise? Will this film be more of a remake of the original or more based off the novel?

Do yourself a favour and read the book. For anybody who's a regular on this site, it should be a quick and easy read.

The book is currently $1.99 on the Amazon Kindle store.

Idk how long that price will last.

Not crazy about those armors either... Everything else looks solid. But I can't help but feel a bit underwhelmed.
Does this mean becoming a
dictator that leads to the deaths of billions of people
is in Thunberg's future?

isnt the costume design a little to basic and simple for a scifi movie?

I don't hate armor either. I don't hate anything about this movie so far. Combat armor just doesn't look practical (neck area especially looks dangerous as hell) and feels like it was crafted from pieces of furniture or car parts... I don't know. It's OK. With a helmet it will probably look better. But so far it feels like it belongs to Mad Max, not Dune.

flying in a futuristic vehicle with some turbulence and the neck will brake.

Looks... okay but I’m not exactly wowed by any of it. Really wish they had gone a different route with the nostril tubes because they just look silly.

I think it can break even in much simpler conditions. It can probably cut through your face if you accidentally land on your ass.

Go back in time and see how folks in the 1950s envisioned what we'd be wearing in the year 2020. Nobody dresses like that now, except @Marvolo.

Looks good to me honestly. Very practical and gritty which is what I kind of expected given Villenueve's style with his past films, but obviously it would be better to judge this stuff by seeing it on the bigscreen first. I will say that I do think Issac, Brolin and Mamoa look really badass in their uniforms/costumes though. Very much digging this first look at Chalamet as Paul Atreides too. I just want to see some damn footage already.

Love it. Can't wait to see the Harkonnen designs. The still suits are perfect. And I am glad that the face coverings are a part of it. That tends to be overlooked in stillsuit designs. The current tint of the Fremen eyes is perfect.

I still don't get the casting for Liet. Seems like a pointless change to me.

When Paul encounters the Fremen, they are inherently patriarchal. It just tells me they are going to bleach the aspects of the Fremen audiences might not find acceptable.

It's Paul and Jessica's influences that tweak, alter the ways of the Fremen.

Jessica is the one who exploited the safeguards the Bene Gesserit built into the Fremen culture. And gender politics is kind of complicated with Herbert, in the first books at least. I would not mind if they tweaked things a bit, because Herbert had some troublesome views that came out more in the later novels.

Its kind of complicated with Dune. Reading the books, you get less of a sci-fi vibe than you get a medieval vibe. And when the big sci-fi tech thing in most stories, computers, are banned, it can create a bit of a weird conflict.

Someone found out that stillsuits use Oakley gloves.

You said Batman looked cheap?
Fremen: hold my shai-hulud.

"Needs more badass wahmen" comment of Villeneuve is bit concerning. Comments like that are usually a sign of a bad movie. Villeneuve's track record is a stronger argument, but why did they even need to explain their choice...

That's such a generalization, though. For today's standards, the movie probably does need a slight update of the female characters vs. when the novel was originally written. That doesn't mean that this is going to be a sci-fi take on Elizabeth Banks' "Charlie's Angels," or that we're going to get an out of place slow-mo shot of the women as in "Avengers: Endgame."

Let's not take things out of context and see demons where there are none.

I am all for Chani not getting relegated to babymaker post timeskip.

Takes place thousands of years into the future and characters wear gloves that you can find in a store nowadays.

They don't look out of context and don't look cheap in the shots. Which is the only thing that matters. So someone found out they are Oakley gloves. Who cares?! They appear to mesh perfectly with the suits' designs.

I think they do.
