Sci-Fi Dune

I just hope arrakis feels like an alien planet to some degree, not just like an earth desert or another tatooine/jakku. If they go with that purpleish tint hinted at some time ago that would be cool. Since the spice is in everything in arrakis they could give it some kind of colored haze.

I'll be surprised if Arrakis looks anything more than Earth's desert (with some extra matte paint work). But it's good for me. I think Dune needs realism. It takes the subject of ecology and nature seriously and it needs to look convincing.

It still can look striking and interesting if used right. You don't need purple sand or glowing trees for that.

It probably will look pretty grounded and realistic, going by Villeneuve's style. If the leaked script is to believed there will be scenes on giedi prime. Which would be a better opportunity for a weird toxic landscape. BR2049 had some interesting vibrant color choices here and there, I am figuring the same will be for Dune.

I bet Arrakis, Caladan and Giedi Prime will look futuristic enough. Realistic nature will be counterbalanced by futuristic architecture and interiors.

By the way, we should get something in couple of hours.

I like the new take on the still suits. Not sure about that landing armor/suit. But these are just stills.

I still don't get the casting for Liet. Seems like a pointless change to me.

When Paul encounters the Fremen, they are inherently patriarchal. It just tells me they are going to bleach the aspects of the Fremen audiences might not find acceptable.

It's Paul and Jessica's influences that tweak, alter the ways of the Fremen.

I hope they keep the blue eyes the way they are in those stills, and dont add a glow effect.

Still suits look good.

The combat armor is good in some ways, and bad in other ways.

I think the elements under the plating looks good. The plating itself looks weird. Sort of has a cheap/fake look to it.

Listen, to be clear, I don't hate the suits. I'm just a little mixed on them.

I don't hate armor either. I don't hate anything about this movie so far. Combat armor just doesn't look practical (neck area especially looks dangerous as hell) and feels like it was crafted from pieces of furniture or car parts... I don't know. It's OK. With a helmet it will probably look better. But so far it feels like it belongs to Mad Max, not Dune.

The best costume work is Atreides uniform. Stlillsuits are super-basic, rather unimaginative. But they look functional and it's probably enough if storytelling is good.

Robed Jessica looks too much like you know what.

Why Fremen wear those ugly drapes - I dunno. I hoped for something more culturally rich. Textured robes, capes, some variety in outfits... Just feels like a missed opportunity. But maybe within context of the movie it will feel more organic.

I know nothing about Dune at all. Never read the novel or saw the original film. But I like a lot of the cast and crew involved with this one, and those stills look great. Can anyone fill me in on the basic premise? Will this film be more of a remake of the original or more based off the novel?

It's not a remake of the original. It's a faithful adaptation of the novel. First half of the first novel.
I think Vanity Fair article does good job of introducing the setting. Give it a read. Or if you don't want to, it's basically Game of Thrones in space, with ecology, religion and politics subtext.

I've only seen brief snippets of the movie and mini series from time to time. The concept and terms were hard to grasp for me.

I would lol if Denis had an updated version of the end credits from the movie.

Stillsuits and armor are a bit underwhelming. I mean, i guess i should blame myself for having those delicious moebius drawings stuck in my brain.
Still beyond hyped for this film. In fact, i havent been this hyped since TDK.

All looks great to me, been a while since I read the book but tend to watch the Lynch version every now and again just due to how bonkers it is.

Do yourself a favour and read the book. For anybody who's a regular on this site, it should be a quick and easy read.

The stillsuits reminds me of the ones from the Lynch movie. Just with more fabric added.
