Sci-Fi Dune

I wonder what general population of Star Wars geeks will think of Dune... Will they be interested in it?

I guess we shall see. Dune and Star Wars have space opera elements and such, but they are really as different as night and day. Dune is far more ambiguous. The "good guys" are not always very good and heroic.

Many a Star Wars fan knows Dune. After all, Star Wars heavily takes from Dune, specifically the first 3 books. Most Star Wars fans I know, are also fans of Dune. But they are legit geeks as well, so.

Well, given some of Herbert's ****ty gender politics won't survive to a modern adaptation, that may also piss off a lot of geeks. Granted, a lot of the worse stuff doesn't surface to the later books, that we are unlikely to get to.

You're thinking of a different kind of movie. Another one that I'd highly recommend.

Frank Herbert's

D O O K I E

Following a vicious assault on his family by the evil Baron Scatimir Harkonnen, young Poop Atreides escapes into the desert of Fartakis to embrace his destiny as leader of the enigmatic Fecalmen.

Yeah... that is why I stop with Children of Dune. But honestly, There is the first book, the next two and then the rest. Whether it comes from Herbert or his son.

With everything we've seen so far, I'm honestly more stoked than I thought I would be.

Really hoping WB ramps up the marketing for this movie. I don't want another John Carter or Blade Runner 2049, good sci-fi movies that unfortunately flopped because of either lackluster marketing or a lack of widespread interest.

Comparing the marketing of a film and a cable series might be a bit apples and oranges, but I feel like some lessons can be learned from however HBO distinguished Game of Thrones from a more Tolkein-esque fantasy. Now, granted, there was a pretty decent gap between the LOTR trilogy and GOT’s premiere, but I think those movies cast a pretty long shadow. With this, they can’t leave any doubt in the audience’s mind that this is NOT a Star Wars knock-off.

And, yeah, also don’t play coy with the details like BR2049’s marketing.

Lets see. Heavy on the people of color cast. Multiple female leads. Generally less action. LOTS of politics. They will hate it.
Maybe they should market it towards Game of Thrones folk? But those probably don't go to movies.

I doubt the younger fans have ever read Dune.

Yeah, let's hope unlike with BR2049, we know what the story is going in.

They told us what we needed to know in the trailers for Blade Runner 2049. The rest was up to the movie to reveal.

I'm grateful they didn't spoil the experience.

I know they are totally different stories, but I really hope this can pick up and succeed where the last 2 mainline Star Wars movies (TLJ and TROS) failed. I.E give us an engaging story with characters we love and whose journey we stay interested in throughout. Hopefully having the books as the basis will help with that.

This shouldn't fail with that cast and the director, but stranger things have happened.

There are native animal/species to specific planets (I.e. The Sandworms are essential story element of the planet Arakis/Dune)
However by intention the focus is different humanoid races spread throughout the known system, some who have *"evolved" either naturally or towards specific ends.
*Mutated humanoids, or rather over time humanoids diverging towards different beings, is a big part of the overall world building.

Really can't wait to see our first Sandworm, they were a highlight of Lynch's movie.

I don't tend to read books twice but it's been so long since I read Dune I may give it another try.

And navigators probably won't even appear in the first film.

We don't the fish Navigator in the first book only 2 humanoid Guildsmen.
The stillsuits look good in the pictures, the robes could have been heavier though.
The body armors seem misplaced when you know that people use body shield and Atreides battle technique is about agility(among other things).
