Sci-Fi Dune

if it's done right, I'm all for it. at the sametime, i'm weary of shooting the entire movie infront of a blue screen. I'm sure Zodiac wasn't ALL blue screen.

isnt for everything in a movie?

Weary...
It never took off. Even i'm surprised by this actually. I would've thought that after 300 studios would've seriously considered shooting more pics against blue/green screens because of the cost reduction. But it never reallt took off.
2002 SW AOTC
2004 SKy Capt
2005 SIn City & SW ROTS
2007 300
2008 Speed Racer
2009 Avatar
2010 Tron Legacy
Yes each year there is a movie that's totally shot against a blue screen but it's just ONE movie . not several.

And you are right about Zodiac not being a 100% blue screen movie.

i used zodiac as an example because when you watch the movie there is no way that you think about bluescreen.

hmmmm maybe because they created city streets? obvious when you are on a fantasy planet you know that its created with CGI. ;)

I'm a huge fan of the digital backlot/Green Screen/Blue Screen thing. Not only from a cost standpoint, but you can shoot fairly quickly, Sky Captain was shot in less than a month if I'm remembering correctly. It's like doing an elaborate stage production, then you can get as epic with the background as you wish.

I wouldn't mind if Dune were done in this way, as long as it's done well. There have been a couple bad examples that look pretty horrid and a story like Dune needs to look top notch.

Some of my favorites: Sky Captain, Casshern, Able Edwards, Immortel (ad vitam), Sin City, Speed Racer, Sanctuary (the tv show), Spartacus (tv also).

Please no bluescreen for Dune...all I can think of with that are the horrendous desert backdrops they shot against for the miniseries.

Writer Chase Palmer Boards Dune

Source:The Hollywood Reporter
February 11, 2010

The Hollywood Reporter says Chase Palmer will work on the Dune script for director Pierre Morel (From Paris With Love, Taken) at Paramount Pictures.

Palmer will work Morel's ideas into original writer Josh Zetumer's screenplay. According to the trade, Morel is intent on staying close to the source material, Frank Herbert's classic 1965 sci-fi novel.

Kevin Misher and Richard Rubinstein are producing the new film.

i still don't think Pierre Morel is the most..mature guy to film a movie adaptation like Dune. He's like a more subtle French Michael Bay, similarly to another Luc Besson student, Louis Letterier.

I could be wrong; I just want to see how he does on a movie without the support of Luc Besson.

why not just get Jodorowsky again? His stuff for the earlier failed Dune pic are FANTASTIC, I would LOVE to see him make his film again... with all of the CG and tools available... they should bring him back

About Jodo version, I'am not sure, he might be too wierd for Dune and I don't think Hollywood would give him a decent budget anyway. On the other hand Moebius work could be recycled ( he did the costums, vehicule and building design if I am not mistaken ) but as much as I love HR Giger I don't think his view fits Dune ( have a look at the spice harvester ).
I hope this new version will be epic as LotR movies, Dune needs this kind of "grandeur".

It was pretty generic Lynch, what did you find weird beside the extreme short cuts made in the story ( weirding module, navigator folding space or the "magic" ending ) ?

Why is this being remade?

Was Lynch's film not like the novel? Because I've seen it and it holds up really well in terms of how it looks, it doesn't look outadate at all.

Why not a remake, it is Dune ! Dune !!! It is the LotR of Scfi :)

The designs are great yes but some SFX are very old school ( a lot of matte panting, almost stationary space ships ) but as you said it holds up.
The movie is the first two novels but it was very condensed and many short cuts were made ( see my previous post ).

Oh really? I did not even know there were multiple novels. I have never heard of Dune before I saw the movie, because I like some of David Lynch's work so I decided to buy Dune.

I did not know it was a very famous work.

I also did not know that Jodorowsky was going to make a Dune movie before, I like his work. Who is making this remake?

They are six books ( in my edition, vol1 is set in tow books ). I can't recommend enough you to read it, at least the first book, the pivotal volume ( the biggest ) is the God Emperor but if you can make it there you're close the the final book Chapterhouse: Dune which is very nice. Herbert's son and another writer wrote prequels books but they are not as good ( story and quality of writing ).

Herbert created a detailed universe, there is no hole ( almost ) in the story and you have a little lexicon in the first book as well as few pages that explain the background historical settings and if you are an "hardcore" fan ( like me ) you can buy the Dune Encyclopedia ( by Willis McKelly ).

Thank you very much, I like reading so I will check them out:yay:

Have you read EMPIRE magazine's article on this topic ?

As for the article , i don't understand why they don't shoot the pic against a blue screen. It reduces the cost greatly.

Link? Scans? on the Jodorowsky article?

watch the 8 minute jodorowsky interview on Dune on youtube... it's brilliant, he shows all these various sketches, they just look beautiful ...

The whole tone of the movie was wrong, the Harkonnen were portrayed as degenerated monsters (heart plugs? the portrayal of the Baron) instead of just power-hungry politicians. Dune is not a horror story.

What about the navigator folding space? They do that in the books (okay not them directly, their Holtzmann machines)

I liked the SyFy miniseries just fine really.

Honestly, I don't care for the sequels Herbert did either.
