Sci-Fi Dune

Zendaya really was fantastic in Euphoria. I was not impressed with her the least bit in the most recent Spider-Man movies, but I no longer doubt her talent as an actress anymore and hopefully Villeneauve can also bring out that great potential in her as well.

While she wasn't given much still in the MCU... she has shown more potential with what she was given over Dunst or Stone.

Hell, one episode of Euphoria [Z] > s2 of Fargo [Dunst] > Easy A [Stone] >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ________________ anything else Dunst/Stone have done.

Villenueve is easily the next in line, behind Nolan. On this tier of filming and popularity.

The next tier are directors like Flanagan, Lanthimos, Waititi, Gerwig... finding their niche, but established.

Anyone else that are coming down the trenches to be the next Nolan/Villenueve are still a few films short of getting a "blank check" even though they have a strong voice or built-in fanbase within this nice middle ground of art meets popularity that Kubrick essentially created and Spielberg tried to adhere to.

Ala...

Lowery
Ross Perry
Safdie(s)
Cooler
Saulnier
Garland
McDowell

Fincher, Mendes, PTA are all more established than Nolan even though being more on the artier side of things compared to the general public. And, Tarantino is a tier above Nolan and Villenueve... He's almost an outlier post-Lucas and Spielberg.

I think that Tarantino is solid but sometime his tone and movies feels a bit the same. I prefer Nolan's work to be honest and Villenueve, while being a weaker director... has already directed two movies that are on par with any Tarantino film except Pulp Fiction. We need to see how Dune goes...

I will always look forward to Nolan's films after he released TDK and Inception, which are in my top 10 favorite films for sure. Also, Fincher's filmography is not as strong as Nolan's or Tarantino's IMO.

Alien 3 - don't remember much

Se7en - amazing

The Game - great

Fight Club - overrated tbh but a good film

Panic Room - don't remember

Zodiac - great

Benjamin Button - haven't seen

The Social Network - amazing

TGWTT - great

Gone Girl - haven't seen.

Alien 3 and Panic Room for sure aren't better than any of the listed director weakest work except Spielberg's, which has higher highs.

The movie looks breathtakingly gorgeous, but I feel they are making the same mistake they did wit BR2049. They are not doing a good job about telling the audience what this movie is about. As someone who is not familiar with Dune, I don't understand what the hell is going on. I understand why fans familiar with Dune will probably not want this, but I hope the 2nd trailer goes deeper into the story.

I don’t know why, but I thought we weren’t getting sand worms in this installment, so I am very happy to have been wrong on that. As cool as the Pink Floyd sample is, I was selfishly hoping this trailer would give us 2-3 minutes worth of Zimmer’s score. :funny:

Whiplash is an all-time great and one of the best movies i have ever seen and i liked the other movies that Chazelle has directed (less obviously). Also, PTA is a great director no doubt but i didn't enjoy the Adam Sandler one, it feels a lot unrealistic and boring at the same time.

Having only seen Parasite, i can't say much from Bong-John Oh and neither for Park Chan Wook, having only seen Oldboy.

Fincher is one of the most consistent ones, and he surpasses Denis with Se7en and Zodiac IMO.

Cameron has directed T1, T2 and Aliens which are still great and i personally liked True Lies and Titanic. Haven't seen the rest in ages.

1917, Skyfall and American Beauty are also great (not 1917) from Mendes. I agree that Spielberg's lastest films aren't that great but he's still solid and an all-time great. I mean, he directed Schindler's List which is a classic.

Why you don't like Tarantino?
Personal preference --I don't like Tarantino films very much. lol

Cameron IMO is in similar spot as Spielberg and he has done very little directing works -- dude is all about Avatar in the last 10 years lol. His films while very popular, are not that good.

Bong Joon Ho --Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer & The Host, are all excellent modern films.

Had a look at the list, it should be:

Scorsese
Nolan
Fincher
Bong Joon Ho
Villenueve
PTA
Aronofonsky
Tarantino

I watched the trailer again with Brian Eno's Prophecy Theme playing on the background and it got significantly better.

Cool trailer. I've seen the first film but it was years ago and so I only vaguely remember some stuff. Will have to rewatch it before this one

this is true. my friends watched the trailer and they had no idea what its about.
i had to give them a general overview: house attreides, house harkonnen, the spice, giant sandworms, etc. lol

This is a new adaption of the first half of the book. Theres really no need to watch the original Dune movie unless you are a fan of it.

Paul's father is the Duke and ruler of a planet. He is going to the desert planet to also rule it and he will gain control of the Spice on the planet. Spice is pretty much everything in the Dune universe. Spice is in the sand and it is harvested. Without it civilization falls apart. The disgustingly fat guy is Baron Harkonen. He wants to destroy Paul's family and take the desert planet and the Spice. The desert people are the Fremen. A nomadic people that live off the Spice. It turns their eyes blue.

Thats the basics.

Will somebody who knows nothing about Dune be able to tell what the movie is about from that trailer?

They can tell that it is about competing factions one of which is a royal house on an alien planet. Thats about all.

I've watched the trailer like 10 times today and while I really do like it overall I just can't get over how much I don't like that gospel/church cover of that Pink Floyd song.

I have no problem with the lyrics or anything either, but it just doesn't fit IMO. Maybe they wanted to save the Zimmer score for the next trailer which I probably won't even watch to be honest.

Also, as much as I'm enjoying the trailer judging by the reactions here and elsewhere it still looks like they did a pretty poor job selling it to the general audiences which is always a bad sign when it comes to your first trailer out the gate.

I really hope this doesn't suffer a similar fate as Blade Runner 2049 did, because Warner Bros horribly botched that movies marketing.

Saw this on twitter, a trailer for an old Dune video game. I feel this does a better job of setting up the universe and plot much more clearly than the movie trailer.

Is that enough for the unitiated?
What this teaser implies and shows is barely the tip of a gargantuan plot iceberg, and it doesn't even scratch the surface of Herbert' world building. As it is, the teaser is pretty generic scifi.

That was MUCH clearer than the trailer for the live action version of the original novel.

It really does, the game trailer sets the table. There's this planet with spice, spice is needed for damn near everything, space travel, superpowers, political power etc, the planet has no water meaning it's a F'ed up place, because of the value of spice you have three houses battling over it. Boom! ready, set, and go.

The movie trailer is all over the place, Tim's character is kissing Zendaya, now he's hugging Jason Mamoa, fat dude in a bathtub, Batista walking all mean, oh and there's a pain box. Like seriously, lay some ground work for people not in the know.

Considering Baron Harkonnen is in cahoots with the Emperor, and that the Emperor is the one assigning House Atreides to Arrakis in the first place, isn't it a little weird that the Emperor isn't in this? He seems pretty relevant to the plot to not be present at all.
