Sci-Fi Dune

Science ficiton, science fantasy, or alien movies.
Honestly, just make the next film 2.5 hours again… first hour and a half is “part two” of book 1. Then, tag Messiah on for the final hour.

Then, film three can be Children if Dune - but I’d rather Children/God Emperor/Heretics/Chapterhouse just be 6-8 episode seasons that air every two years on HBO. With Denis overseeing this universe… maybe with some of his current Dune team working on these seasons.

That doesn't work. At all.

Not quite true. Jackson and co.'s changes seemed to multiple upon each other as that trilogy went on. If you directly compare Fellowship and Dune Part I, I think the former compares favourably with the latter in terms of faithfulness.

I need to see it again, but as much as I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was a beautiful bit of filmmaking, certain cuts bugged me. There was a part of me that found the narrative too streamlined and potentially lacking in depth. For instance, I would have loved to have a more fulsome plotting session with the Baron at the outset as in the book. I think it would have helped some viewers get into the world more and it would have been a wonderful moment to really establish the Baron as a wonderful classical scenery chewing villain.

Second, I found the cuts to Dr. Yueh's story hurt the narrative a little and I very much would have liked to see the dinner scene. In particular, I worry that the cuts to the traitor subplot will undermine certain character decisions later. It will arguably result in bigger changes in Part II, just as small changes in Fellowship begot larger changes in Two Towers and Return of the King.

We can only judge the faithfulness of the adaptation when we see the story in full.
How does any of this compare to the removal of Tommy B and Glorfindel, the use of Arwen, and how Aragorn approaches Narsil?

Tom Bombadil is a nice little side interlude that doesn't have a ton of effect on the rest of story. It is equivalent to Denis' cutting of various side plots here. Similarly, the removal of Feyd from this film and his role in the council meetings with the Baron being replaced with Rabban is similar to the swapping of Arwen for Glorfindel for Frodo's flight to the Fords. It's a small change meant to reduce the number of characters the audience needs to keep track of.

Now with respect to Aragorn's motivation and attitude towards Narsil...
You might say that the extraction of subplot of the Harkonnens' planting suspicion that Jessica is the traitor is similar. It changes the interaction between her and other key characters, such as Duncan, Thufir, Gurney, and even Leto. Also like Aragorn and Narsil, it sets up the need to make bigger changes down the line in Part II because the misinformation results in Gurney making an attempt on Jessica's life, which motivates Paul to take the Waters of Life since he did not foresee Gurney's attempt. Theoretically, they could bring this all up in Part II but it would be pretty tacked on.

Has Denis mentioned an extended cut of part 1 at all as I just want more of this. And while I only ever read the first book I am here for multiple movies in this franchise.

This is what Villeneuve said in regards to Momoa wanting an extended cut:
I love Jason but such a thing doesn’t exist! The Director’s Cut is what people are watching in theatres right now. There will be no other cut. Yes I could have made a much longer, more contemplative movie, but that was not the plan.

You can't end it with Messiah. Children is basically the end of the first "trilogy". Basically what you have is:

First trilogy
- Dune
- Messiah
- Children

God Emperor the connective middle story.

Second trilogy
- Heretics
- Chapterhouse
- Unreleased final story

Technically Unreleased Final Story exists as Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune by Brian Herbert. I don't consider them cannon personally. I don't read any of Brian's stuff. Just Frank's work. But supposedly those 2 books were based on Frank's Dune Book 7 outline. Supposedly.

I say, go for 5 movies, split up Children into 2.

Anyway, saw it in Imax today. I really, really loved this movie. All the changes that Villenueve made made sense to me. I will probably post a longer review raving over this later, but yeah, I loved it and want so much more.

I dont think Denis would stay on for Children of Dune. I just hope he stays and finishes through Dune Messiah. Especially if Children of Dune is split up, that is 5 movies and like a decade of the man's life.. my bet is he will want to do other stuff. Children of Dune I could see being the handoff to a new director, but yes....split that into 2 movies.

This is what Villeneuve said in regards to Momoa wanting an extended cut:
Frankly I don't need an extended cut, I just hope that when it comes out on 4K/Blu-ray it's jam packed with deleted scenes...and while I'm bringing it up I'd also love it if we got the IMAX aspect ratio changes but it's rare to see that on home releases these days.

I’d actually like an extended cut to flesh out the Harkonens more or perhaps more scenes with Leto Atreides. Anything really because this world is really fascinating

I agree with Denis. There is no need for an Extended or Director's Cut. Thank you for giving me the movie you wanted to make the first time. In the dang cinema
There is no need for extended cut because he likely sees Part I and Part II as just one movie. Which when Part II is released it truly will be. He can flesh out and put scenes there he didnt previously.

Never read past Dune, but I assume Messiah would only need to take one movie as it’s a shorter book. Denis can make that his full Paul trilogy.

I guess if that proves successful, a new director can jump on for Children of Dune since it’s a next generation thing anyway so can have a different style keeping in the same world. Hopefully I’ll still be alive by the time it’s all released lol

I don’t want Villeneuve making Dune movies for the next 10 years. He’s too creative and talented to waste that much time on one thing.

I loved Dune (haven’t read the books) and I’m sure I’ll love it more the second time. Super stoked for Part 2, but I’m also looking forward to him getting back to smaller films. He’ll likely make The Son (another adaptation) with Jake Gyllenhaal after Dune Part 2. That’s coming out as a limited series on HBO. Then maybe he’ll do Dune Messiah rounding off his trilogy (but based on what I know of Messiah, I think he should wait and make at least one more film between The Son & Messiah).

Then pass it off to someone else. And continue making original films.

Denis can easily do the Nolan Batman Begins/The Prestige/TDK/Inception/TDKRISES method.

Plus, this might make him go back to even smaller projects in between ala Prisoners - yet Nolan just matched his Batman movies with personal projects in terms of scale in-between (other than The Prestige).

Denis already mentioned wanting to do a Bond film, so I can easily see that coming down the pipeline in the next decade, but I don’t mind him spending the next five years making Dune sequels. After he’s gotten Dune out of his system, I’d then like to see him return to “smaller” films again with big ideas (ex. Arrival).

How about Denis does two more Dune movies? We barely have any high-budget sci-fi epics. He already made a dozen smaller films that range from OK to great.

Exactly my thoughts. I want to see him making more Dune films but I also want to see different things from him and escpecially the Nesbo adaptation which looks really cool and was first announced in 2016.

A gorgeous film with a great epic scope, terrific cast and great directing. The first half was great but the second half after the attack dragged a little and felt incomplete. That’s my only issue. I mean I knew going in this was only the first half of the book but I thought they would end it at a point that was going to be a tad more satisfying. Oh and I never read the book but knowing it’s reputation, I thought it was going to be a lot more dense. But this was a breeze to sit through imo. Very easy to keep up with. Denis did a great job. Looking forward to the conclusion.

While I would have loved that scene… staying away from the words jihad or catholic makes sense for a producer standpoint concerning GA.
