Sci-Fi Dune

I really thought when
Duncan rises up for his final stand he was gonna grab the laser cutter and take down a slew of Sardaukar. Would have been a cool way to punctuate the end of that scene and given it a little more tangible of an action beat.
If I remember correctly, lasers and shields don't mix together well and cause nuclear explosion or something like that. One of the reasons everyone uses cold weapons.

Seems Dune has decent word of mouth. It just pretty much crossed threshold of being profitable with $306M worldwide and counting. Good news for Part II. Despite Part II being announced you still want Part I be decent box office success.

Maybe I'll like this more when Part 2 comes out. I dunno. Movie just felt like a 2.5 hour prologue.
I don't have issues with the hanging threads or where the story ends.

It's that I was given no reason to care about anything the previous 2 hour 35 minutes.

There is zero urgency in me to want to see part two because at no time did these characters or story grab me or engage me in a meaningful way.

I have some questions about the 2nd act:

Clearly some stuff was cut out of the surprise attack. It's kind of annoying because I can think of other sections and scenes that easily could have lost the time better. I think the most pronounced thing is something happened with Duncan Idaho that we don't get to see because during that sequence we suddenly see him walking down halls with his blade and a bloody spot on his shirt. Anyone know what exactly they cut?

Then, and maybe this wasn't a cut but just wasn't shot... Thufir Hawat? I know what happens in the book and Lynch's movie but it was weird to me how much Villeneuve actually spent some time with the Mentat but then, unless I just missed it somehow (and I might have because, again, this section of the movie was pretty choppy and murky) we don't even get a single shot of him during or after the attack.

I would imagine they cut this bit (from the script):duncan.png

And they also did film a scene of Thufir Hawat being apprehended by the Sardaukar.

This kind of cuts make me sad. I get you cut some longer scenes which includes conversation to get down some run time. But when you cut scene like Thufir Hawat being apprehended feels just wrong. This kind of scene is tops 20 seconds long. You telling me you couldnt show it or insert it into 2 and half hours?

After the financial failure of Blade Runner, Villeneuve was really trying to make a crowd-pleasing movie (he has said it himself) and I guess he figured that means making the movie as short as possible.

Earlier than Villeneuve suggested but kind of necessary if they want to hit that October 2023 release date.

That's not a particularly important scene right now though. They can easily establish that he was apprehended in the next film when it will be of relevance to the plot. I don't see any fault in making the audience wonder about the state of characters that we didn't see die. It's quite common to do that.

Oh man, can you imagine if Dune 2 is a huge success so they go ahead and make Dune Messiah? Lol

And to be quite frank, it won't be very important for the next movie, either. Hawat's story it is the most non essential of the next movie.

Finally finished this yesterday. It took me a few days to get through it, not because it wasn’t good but as I’ve already mentioned in this thread, some other responsibilities have kept me from it and I wanted to really be able to focus on this movie as I watched it.

All in all, I think it’s pretty great. It is a bit choppy at times and some characters unfortunately get the short end of the stick but it’s a very solid adaptation of the book; certainly a million times better than the garbage Lynch version. As many have said, it’s a difficult property to adapt but I think Denis did a stellar job here. The action sequences, particularly the attack on House Atreides, are fantastic, as are all the visuals of Arrakis, deep space and Caladan. I’m not sure I’m crazy about the Harkonnens looking like Cenobites; not really because it looks bad but more because it makes them look like villains I’ve already seen in a dozen of so other movies. But it’s fine. Hopefully at least Feyd will look more human than the rest of his family.

Standouts: Chalamet and Ferguson have the largest and probably most difficult roles in that they have to carry most of the film. And when you consider that Paul isn’t the most engaging character to begin with (at least not in this part of the book), it’s admirable that Chalamet managed to give him a bit of depth. Though he does get a bit too “Jon Snow” in his brooding. Ferguson adds more warmth to Jessica than I was expecting, and I like that. Because she still comes off like a capable badass and leader.

I’ll also give shoutouts to Momoa, Rampling and Duncan-Brewster; their roles are fairly small but they shine in what they are given. Momoa in particular surprised me; he was a lot less bro-ish than I expected. I would have loved to see a prologue sequence where he finds and bonds with the Fremen.

Lastly, it’s funny that Bautista felt a need to call out Marvel for having him act like an idiot for most of his MCU appearances when all he does here is come off like a moron. He really didn’t do anything of significance (which is pretty much in line with Rabban in the book, lol) so either a lot of stuff was left on the cutting room floor or else he’s just overrating his own performance.

I’m glad the box office has been stronger than expected. A sequel is pretty much guaranteed now but if it was rapidly tanking they might back off of it. Looks like we don’t have anything to worry about.

I think at this point, I hope it does well and the sequel does even better, so they greenlight Dune Messiah and we can have his “trilogy”.
