Sci-Fi Dune

Oh, I understand the preference, but I think realistically we would've ended up with four pretty interchangeable Harkonnen characters if he was in there. I'm just curious at this point who they'll cast and we'll see what they do with him in part 2. The ink is already dry anyway. :yay:

Possibly, or it could've set up a younger rival for Paul on the Harkonnen side to help build that character up more. It's all about execution. Also, it's about narrative and execution. The very first chapter of the book occurs like 20 minutes into the film. Which is fine and all. You have to ease an audience into this wacky sci-fi future and world. I don't think it would've made four interchangeable Harkonnens though.

Rabban = big, dumb, aggressive. All brawn and no brain. Excessively cruel. Might makes right. No compassion. Wants to wear the big boy pants.
Feyd = cunning, ambitious, younger, devious. He's the golden boy and he knows it.
Baron = excess and greed incarnate. Seductive. Manipulative. Lugubrious. Knows he can't entrust the future of his house to Rabban.

Actually, the reason I like the Harkonnen clan is that they are NOT interchangeable as villains. They are all fairly distinct and unique. They are only interchangeable if they are interpreted on film that way.

Not including him in the first movie was a misstep.
Not how the film is structured, and I am guessing not on how the narrative flows over the two films. First one is all about the dirty work. That's the Baron's job, carried out by his evil mentat and rabid nephew. In the sequel we will get the Emperor and the Paul's doppelganger. The "presentable" ones. I could totally see a situation where the sequel starts with Feyd in combat, mirroring Paul's final scene in the first film.

I think the parallels with Paul and Fayd will be even stronger now that we've seen a bigger part of Paul's journey though.

Well it's honestly a matter of screen time, right? The movie was never going to be longer than it is now, so any additional minute we spend with the Harkonnen has to come from somewhere else. I know you already suggested they should've taken that time from Duncan, but ultimately it seems unlikely they would've made a call like that.

That's again the main reason why I personally support moving the character to part two. I also think when viewed back-to-back eventually his absence in part one will barely stand out. Especially if his role in part two feels beefy.

Well again, I feel like Dude Bro Duncan came at the cost of Feyd. Some of the extra stuff with Duncan felt forced and contrived to me. They need to give Duncan a bigger role to justify Jason Momoa's casting. Plus more action and fighting with Duncan and give the audience a cooler, muscle bound action hero on the side of the good guys.

This also results in less time for Yui and Paul. Also, Gurney never plays his baliset. Would've been nice to see that Gurney has a softer side as well and likes music and songs.

I would've rather have had Feyd in the film than all the extra material they gave dude bro Duncan.
I'm glad they broadened Duncan's role. Feyd is absolutely unnecessary in part 1. Duncan is, though, considering where the story goes. Besides, what dude bro scenes are you talking about?

Especially since they cut one of his biggest parts from the book.

I have a feeling Feyds role will me minimal. Reduced to some visions of Pauls, some interaction with the Baron and then the end fight. There's really not a big need to give him a character arc, seriously he's mostly there for the Barons exposition.
I doubt we get his attempt on the Baron in the movie

Im much more concerned as to what Denis does with Irulan who going forward actually matters to the story.

Probably Duncan' scene on Caladan when he lands his ship and talk to Paul, Duncan and company scene when he shows Fremen tech and Duncan speaking with Kynes after Arrakeen attack.

So good to hear that about Dune! Next week it will probably surpass Black Widow, a Marvel movie of all movies, and it's headed for 400m+ like it was predicted when it opened. It deserved better but WB was being WB.

I do think it's unfair to compare with Tenet, though. A movie that came out at the worst phase of the pandemic, with most cinemas closed. That film did exceptionally well outside the US, considering the circumstances.

Watching it one last time before it's off HBO Max. It's so good. I love how loud and quiet the film can be. Every moment is a treat. It's probably a good sign when the "best" attack against a film is that it ended in the wrong place.

4K disc will have combination of 2.39:1 and 16:9 aspect ratios. No fullscreen Snyder-style, sadly.

I’m happy with that. Better home viewing when you don’t have a screen the size of Imax lol

Supposedly the 4K and Blu-ray disc streets in the US on January 11th so we won't have to wait long to see it again once it leaves HBO Max.

I might wait for the inevitable two-movie set once Part 2 is released. You just know Villeneuve will pack that thing! And maybe all the deleted scenes people want to see (if not some are used for Part 2)

I've watched the movie twice now, both times in IMAX, and may go for a third.

Also planning to hit my local bookstore soon to buy copies of Dune Messiah, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. Having only read the first book, and hearing that the novels get weirder and weirder, I'm most excited about the fourth. Apparently some critics think God Emperor is even better than the original.

I think Herberts greatest mistakes with the last two books was not writing more Siona.
