Sci-Fi Dune

No, I get that it is a more expedient explanation, I just think it loses a lot of thematic subtext and doesn't quite work in the context of the story. I think there is a way of balancing simplifying it for the general audience without losing the great gotcha moment from the book.

I'm not a purist by any means, I think the novel needed to be updated to give the female characters more agency and similar things. I'm also a guy who did an undergraduate degree in political history and international relations, so I really love the book's commentary on imperialism, colonialism, demagoguery, organized religion, etc. and it bums me out that those elements got cut a ton in this adaptation.
Simple give and take. I’m fine with the neutered politics, for stronger character moments.

Wonder where he got the idea of the whole North vs South on the fundamentalist divide....

Yeah, I think that came off a bit hamfisted and I found the portrayal of the fundamentalists a bit unsettling given the Fremen being representative of people of colour in the developing world in human history.

Honestly, now that I think of it, given that Villeneuve is Quebecois, I am getting some concerning Islamophobic vibes from the movie. (If you are wondering about that context just read about the discriminatory Quebec law, the Quebec Court of Appeal just upheld today).

Finally watching this tonight. Honestly, a bit nervous with how much I loved the first one. The bar has been set high, but I'm really happy we get to spend more time in this world.

The fact that Denis is 2/2 on ending his DUNE films on the face of an important woman coming to a realization about Paul is tremendous.

Part One has Jessica contemplating the path her son is about to take… and the actions she affected upon him.

Part Two has Chani questioning the power her love has now grasped…

$100, Messiah closes on Alia’s face understanding where the future lies with Leto II and Ghanima.

Made the decision to go see this yesterday with a busted ear drum and middle ear infection so I was a bit concerned about the noise (yeah I know, but it worked out, just couldn't hear bass scenes in that ear well), but overall I gotta say the movie was pretty darn fantastic. Especially on a technical level, from the cinematography to the sound, the designs, etc and I thought the cast and actions scenes were excellent.

I do think I need to see it again before I properly review it simply because I think I owe it to the movie, but didn't want to wait for my ear to heal to check it out haha. One thing I will say though is I still feel a coldness to Paul and his story and I can't really put my finger on why. Everything else is magnificent, but like with Dune part 1, my investment in him is more casual than "I need to see what's next!" But maybe it's because I never read the books. I'm not ready to put these on the level of Lord of The Rings just yet, but again, rewatches, along with rewatches of part 1 and part 2 back to back could bring it there for me eventually. But as of now there's a coldness to the Dune films that kinda make me more in awe of the technical aspects and acting than the actual story itself. Overall though, if you're not even a dune fan, I still highly recommend this movie. All movies should aspire to look as good as this.

I know everyone's all about Austin Butler here (and this was the first time I've actually enjoyed him in something, to be fair), but Rebecca was easily the MVP of this for me.
The cast all around were amazing. Several stand out performances in this one. I don't think there was a weak link here.

I like his Dune films a lot, but I can't even call Dune: Part One a masterpiece. It doesn't even have an actual ending. It just abruptly stops.
I dont disagree with that, but I look at Dune and Dune Part Two as 1 story. So collectively, I think the 2 films are a masterpiece. But if you examine Part One as a movie, then yes it doesn't conclude. It just ends

How is the pace in this one compared to the first? I found the first one to be glacial.

Fellowship of the Ring doesn’t have an ending, but it’s a masterpiece on its own. I don’t think that makes or breaks a film if everything else is working IMO

I still think Fellowship is a far more satisfying standalone experience than Dune part 1 is though, personally.

I think Fellowship's ending is a more satisfactory jumping off point overall, but I agree with this in principle. Part One was just that, Part One of a longer story. I don't so much mind things like ending on Voldemort finding the Elderwand or whatever when it's a story cut into multiple parts. I would have minded what they did with Part One had it flopped and Part Two never been made, but Part Two was made. So I don't see this as an issue anymore

Seeing this in 2 hours. Beyond hyped.

Steelbook just pre-ordered as well:

The Empire Strikes Back pretty much has even less of an ending than FotR and Dune part One as well, seeing how the latter two at least end with a major shift in the story (Fellowship breaks up and Paul embracing change and going with the firemen).

With ESB you have the rebels barely escaping but still just going on as before and the Empire didn't really achieve much either. The only big thing is Luke finding out about his father. Still it's the best SW film.
