i never watch VHS anymore. the last movie i saw on VHS was Mortal Kombat about 5 months ago.

I still use VHS,and i always will to a degree.Unless a DVD can rewind and pause at any point on the CD,and i could copy all of my VHS onto DVD`s.

Some movies just look better on VHS. While DVD has far superior sound and image, some movies just weren't meant for that kind of "upgrade". Exploitations look far superior on VHS as well. The movie seems to keep it's original image and sound with the scratches and pops in the sound and image. And when watching it in surround sound, it feels just like watching it at an old grindhouse theatre.

There actually are DVDs out there (From flea-market companies like Diamond,Brentwood,Substance,and a few others) where the transfer IS taken from a VHS source. So I guess that means you can have the best of both worlds.

Anyone else still watch movies on VHS?

I still enjoy my VCR, but I think DVD quality has its advantages. What I don't like is how DVD has made my viewing pleasure more lazy. I can just skip through scenes and not care about the whole film.

While VHS was the mass market favorite, Laserdisc was the better one.

Though Laserdisc had a few drawbacks: the actual unit was about double the price of a VCR, the movies were more expensive than the VHS version, and the discs were a bit heavier. However, the sound quality was far better, the picture quality is comparable to DVD, and you see the movie in the original aspect ratio that the director intended

Some films simply don't turn up on DVD anywhere, thus requiring people to stick with their VHS copies of it.

Yeah, that's the only reason I still use some old VHS tapes...I have hordes of old B-movies that never have, and probably never will be brought over to DVD.

Screw VHS, LaserDisc was so much better. You can fast forward through the FBI warning, it has a 60% better picture than VHS, and it's the only way to listen to a digital soundtrack umcompressed (other than Blu-Ray or HD-DVD). I collect LD's because I prefer the uncompressed PCM digital tracks on them instead of the compressed sound of DVD's. The Jurassic Park CAV LaserDisc is definitley comparable to the DVD.

Ahhhhhhhhhh VHS .... brings back memories.

Having the title of this thread as DVD vs VHS is pointless because there is no fight in terms of quality, picture, sound and value for money .... but for people around my age group (31) I'm sure they can remember many wonderful times watching the big 80s movies on VHS.

Can still remember my Dad wanting a copy of Rambo so badly that he paid our local video rental store £80 to purchase him one direct from the suppliers!

Only reason I still have a VHS player is that I have tapes from when my dad recording some of my sporting events and other family events when I was a kid. Eventually I would like to convert them to DVD.

Nope, Wal-mart got rid of them sometime in 2006. Though you might run into some VHS at a Suncoast.

Both are good.

DVD is great for being a film fan and getting all the extras and junk but VHS is great cuz you can just come home drunk as all hell and throw a movie in and not worry about damaging the disc.

Also as some have pointed out there are some things that probably never will come out on dvd.
