E Street Nation: The Bruce Springsteen Thread

Yes, he is. While I was exercising, I was listening to the recording of the 10 / 17 / 2007 show from the Magic tour at MSG. And of course, Live In New York City is incredible. I always show that dvd to the people I try to convert.

I was at the 10/18 show at MSG. A friend got tickets from a friend who works for Bruce. We found out later that the friend tunes the guitars before the shows. :wow:

But we wound up with great seats just a few rows behind the pit. It was great. And he did Jungleland that night, which was an audible that night, I believe.

Definitely see him in Philly if you get a chance, too. He does lots of classic stuff - when I saw him in 2002 during The Rising tour, he did a solo Incident on 57th St on the piano. The djs on the Philly rock station we listened to on the way home were practically sputtering over that one.

I believe that was also the debut of the green Philly shirt. He also forgot the words to "You're Missing" and needed to regroup with the band on stage for a few minutes - he walked back to the mike and told everyone "I knew I shouldn't have taken that LSD before I came on stage!!" :oldrazz:

I have both of those shows. "Jungleland" actually was planned that night, the audible was "Meeting Across The River," which came before it, as a dedication to their late friend Peter Boyle, whose wife had visited them backstage before the show, and whose birthday would have been that night.

I'm well aware of Bruce's history with Philly, dating back to the late DJ Ed Sciaky, who made Bruce (as well as Billy Joel) well known in Philly before anyone else had heard of him, as well as his legendary appearances at venues like the Main Point and numerous appearances at The Spectrum.

Oh, and speaking of "Incident On 57th Street" in Philly, have you heard the 1975 version from Philly at The Main Point. It's just Bruce, the piano player (not sure if it was Roy at the time), and Suki Lahav (the Israeli violinist who played on the original studio take of "Jungleland")? Quite possibly the most beautiful performance of "Incident" ever. You can hear a police siren wailing in the background that only compounds the beauty of the performance.

Giving this a bump for Patti's birthday. Here's them performing "Rendezvous" at Nassau Colisuem this past May:

Also, Bruce added two more dates at The Spectrum this October, the 19th and the 20th.

Cool. I'm going to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next month, which currently has a Springsteen exhibit. Looking forward to seeing it.

So I was at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland this past weekend, and checked the new Bruce Springsteen exhibit. It was really cool! It was two floors of nothing but Bruce stuff - lots of handwritten lyrics and one of his writing tables, his Oscar for "Streets of Philadelphia", they had one of his cars and one of his motorcycles.

They also had the white t-shirt, jeans and red baseball hat that he wore on the cover of "Born in the USA", as well as the shirt he wore on the cover to "The River."

My favorite part was seeing his Fender guitar on display - it's the old one that sort of chipped at the top. You can see him playing it here (and I've seen him playing it in concert plenty of times):

(unfortunately, it's not the whole song, but you get the idea)

I was less than 2 feet from that guitar. It made my weekend.

But it was great exhibit and the Rock Hall is really cool!

Heard U2 dedicated a song to Bruce during their show at Giants Stadium tonight.

I'm seeing them tomorrow, maybe he'll do it again??? :oldrazz:

They played a little bit of "She's the One" (Bono sang "He's the One" :oldrazz:) as an intro to "Desire."

Cool! Were you at the show?

I just got back from tonight's U2 concert - they were amazing as always. They announced at the end of the show that they'd broken the Giants Stadium attendance record. Bono said "Sorry Bruce!!"

It seemed like nearly everyone we spoke to tonight has got tickets for one of Bruce's shows next week. I'm heading back on Wednesday. :woot:

I was not there, but they were all talking about it on BTX (the forum over at Backstreets.)

I didn't manage to get tickets to GS. I will hopefully be at Madison Square Garden in November. I'm desparate to see them again, not just Bruce and the boys are still awesome, but also because

there are very strong rumors about this being Clarence's final E Street Band tour.

One of my favorite videos. Springsteen and Tom Morello singing "The Ghost of Tom Joad."

Another favorite. Springsteen and Eddie Vedder singing Pearl Jam's "Betterman."

It's sad but it's true. Clarence's health has slowly been going downhill since the Rising tour due to his arthritis and the last year and a half has been a mess for him. He can barely move, he sits down for most of the show, he misses his cues and his overall playing in general has been sapped of a lot of its power. On this tour, they had to replace his solo on "Sherry Darling" with an accordian trio of Roy, Nils and Charlie Giordano because Clarence continually blows his parts on the song. Last year's St. Louis show was almost cancelled due to his health issues (he wound up making it, and that show is now considered by most fans to be the absolute best show of the Magic tour). Word is at the last few shows he's been looking slimmer and is a bit more mobile, so who knows what the future brings (he's having back surgery in January of 2010, in the midst of the two year E Street Band hiatus Steve mentioned recently, so that might do him some good), but word from his camp is that things don't look good.

There's some talk this might be the last tour for E Street as a whole, between Clarence's health problems and the increasingly irksome schedule conflicts with Max over at Conan. If this is true, it's the end of an era and it marks an uncertainty for Bruce's career. Other than the Seeger Sessions Band, which is a completely different animal from anything he's ever done, Bruce has only regularly performed with one other band in his life - the much ridiculed "Other Band" from the 1992 tour. I have the Plugged dvd and a few other shows from that tour. There's a clear difference between that band and E Street. With The E Street Band, there's an extra sense of community, history and brotherhood, and that adds a lot to the sound and passion of the music. The Other Band didn't have that. That tour just felt awkward to me (well, in retrospect: I was only 2 at the time). Listening to it, there's a very synthetic, hollow vibe to it.

This could partially be because I got into Bruce in the post-Reunion era, where there's been extra emphasis put on the E Street Band as opposed to earlier in his career when he stressed that they were a backing band and he was a solo artist. I think it's become very clear to him over the last ten years just how important they are to him, both musically, and professionally. The kiss Bruce gives to Clarence at the end of the night when he gets offstage (Clarence needs an elevator to exit nowadays) is very moving.

Well, that news is totally killing my post-U2 show high. :csad:

Just reminds me why I don't read BTX anymore. :cwink:
