E3 2010

I agree. 2D seems to be making a comeback. Instead of trying to force the game into a format in which it does not really fit, play to its strengths. The notion of a proper Street Fighter IV-esque 2D Castlevania on Wii, using the Wiimote as the whip, is absolutely awesome. At any rate, Konami needs to get their heads out of their asses. Stop trying to be "dark," for the sake of being "dark," with **** like 3D uber-gothic Castlevanias, Saw games, and Silent Hills that are focused on over the top violence as opposed to being focused on geniune scares and tense atmospheres. They need to realize they are not above making niche games like Suikoden and Vandal Hearts. Konami needs to start playing to their strengths again because right now, the only thing that they have right is MGS, and that's not even their doing. Its Kojima's doing.

Huh? Even the later and weaker games in the SH series haven't been about over the top violence. They've tried to stick to exactly what you said (though the success has obviously wavered). Unless you're just referring to the latest one that just got announced, but I didn't know there was enough footage out there to judge it's direction as of yet.

Genres seem to be akin to fads when it comes to gaming. When the PS1, Saturn, and N64 came out they wanted to be seen as a huge leap in gaming. Which to them meant dumping the old 2D style and making 3D games. However that was a long time ago, and 3D models, cameras, and everything else is present in pretty much every game. On top of that half the games out there are cheap clones of something else. So 2D gaming is coming back as retro and a fun throw back in a sea of been there done that titles. Eventually 2D retro games will be seen as boring again, and be left behind again.

Such a vicious back and forth cycle, I like my 2D games :(. Castlevania SOTN is still the best Castlevania (IMO), especially considering it's 3D counterparts thus far, and it's yet to see a true and proper sequel on home consoles (yes I know the DS has seen sequels). Personally I don't care what camera orientation it has, if it's fun, it's fun. Megaman 2D games can give me every bit the same amount of fun as an FPS game.

Thats so true. That reminds me that Sony of America had a no 2D policy on the PS1 that pissed me off. There werent that many bc they wanted the system to be known for its 3d capabilities. Many stuff from Japan didnt get ported over bc of this Thankfully they were lenient on some titles like Castlevania SOTN, which like you remains the best in the series. There was aso the issue that 2D games used sprites which was problematic, mainly bc the system had terrible ram and that stuff used up quite a bit of memory.

Hey Matt, here's what you missed from Konami's Conference.

HAHAHA

The Konami Press conference has to be one of the funniest things I've seen lately. I was literally shedding tears when I first saw this.

Tears of comical joy of course. People need to put on the transcribed audio, it makes this even more funny.

Asian Ray Romano explaining the mechanics of the game while Naoki (second Japanese guy) keeps dancing in the background is so comically awkward.

The transcribe is the cherry on top by putting "the aids virus" when Naoki says he is "very excite" when playing Drance Musturd. :lmao:

Here's one way you can make Konami's disaster of a conference more entertaining: turn on the closed captioning. :lmao:

Seriously Konami, you almost made Microsoft's presentation not seem so bad.

"if you press XXX YYYY you get sucked"

Ill be right back let me run out and get this real quick. :awesome:

Konami broke just about every rule there is about making a compelling presentation, the chiefest of which is "show, don't tell." Seriously, this made James Cameron's Avatar presentation at Ubisoft's conference last year seem absolutely spellbinding by comparison.

"I'm not going to actually show you any footage of the game OR the movie, but you can hear me prattle on for 30 minutes about how AWESOME it's going to be when I actually let you look at it and use tons of techno-jargon and in-universe terms that will bore you to sleep!"

compare to

"One mirion troops, pless XXX YYY you suck EXTREME! whoawhoawhoawhoawhoa, not extreme, EXTREEEEEEEEEEEME!"

Engrish is a great source of lulz, but after listening to a guy talk in it for 30 minutes it starts getting quite annoying, and stops being funny.
