Warners Makes 7-Figure Spec Deal For Japanese Novel 'All You Need Is Kill'

EXCLUSIVE: In a deal that might get writers and their reps to reconsider the value of writing on spec, Warner Bros paid low-seven figures against a purchase price near $3 million for a Dante Harper-scripted adaptation of All You Need Is Kill, a Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Warners execs Jon Berg and production president Greg Silverman moved preemptively for the property and made a deal late Friday that has an aggressive progress to production clause that will likely get the film before the cameras within 12 months.

The book was published originally in Japan by Shueisha and its English language translation was published by VIZ Media. Jason Hoffs, the former DreamWorks exec who is head of production at VIZ Media, got the project to 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff and Tom Lassally. They optioned the book last fall and involved the writer. Harper and his reps at CAA and Management 360 decided he should do it on spec, instead of pitching it. Pitching is the most common tactic in this sluggish material market, because writers and producers only go forward if studios bite. Because there is little more than an idea at that point, deals are usually low six-figures, unless there is an attachment by a big star or director. Some pitches don't sell at all, because studios have cut back so drastically on development deals or don't have money to spend.

By putting in the work and writing several drafts he honed with the producers, Harper--who most recently wrote the Paramount project Black Hole for Plan B and David Fincher to produce--bypassed the pitch morass, made his first seven-figure payday, and has likely improved his six-figure quote by presenting Warners with a movie that can be made quickly. Harper has several other scripts percolating including Dreamland, a drama he hopes to direct about domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh, and The Immortalist for director Bennett Miller, the latter for Paramount. He also wrote with Rupert Sanders The Wild Geese, the latter of which was done for Warners' Silverman, who made the new deal.

The storyline puts a Groundhog Day plot device into a futuristic alien invasion storyline. A raw recruit, pressed into battle against an alien species, gets killed in action. But he is reborn each day to suffer the same fate. Eventually, he notices that he is becoming a better warrior and that other circumstances are changing, which might be the key to altering the outcome.

The film will be produced by Stoff, Lassally and Hoffs, with Hidemi Fukuhara executive producer.

Sounds like an interesting movie. If it is true that the movie will be made within the next 12 months , i think the earliest we'll see this will be in 2012

http://www.deadline.com/2010/06/doug-liman-eyes-kill-zone-is-three-musketeers-fading/#more-47261

Fair Game director Doug Liman is circling All You Need Is Kill, the Dante Harper-scripted adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka drama which Warner Bros acquired in a 7-figure spec deal this spring. The rumors of this pending deal come as suspicion builds that Warner Bros might well be cooling on its The Three Musketeers project, which will get beaten to the start line by rival The Three Musketeers project that Paul W. S. Anderson will direct this summer in 3D for Summit Entertainment. Meetings are happening this week between Liman and Warner Bros.

In All You Need is Kill, a soldier pressed into battle against a superior alien species, gets killed in action, and relives his last day alive over and over. Eventually, he sees things change, he becomes a better warrior and discovers hints that might be the key to altering the outcome. Numerous directors have met on the project recently, including Sam Raimi before he landed on Disney's The Great and Powerful Oz.

I like Liman but the story does not pique my interest.

Doug Liman Signs on for All You Need is Kill

Source: Variety

Doug Liman has officially signed on to direct All You Need is Kill for Warner Bros. Pictures, reports Variety.

Liman was rumored to be the frontrunner for the project two months ago following the delay and possible cancellation of his Three Musketeers adaptation.

All You Need is Kill will be based on the Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, which is officially described as follows:

There's one thing worse than dying. It's coming back to do it again and again... When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the B*tch of War. Is the B*tch the key to Keiji's escape, or to his final death?

Previous reports suggested that part of the deal on the Kill script adaptation requires filming to start immediately and cameras could roll before next spring.

It could be interesting but it sounds too much like Groundhog Day.

I wonder which 'time loop' movie come out first, this or Duncan Jones' 'Source Code'?

This concept will either be really good or really bad.

But Liman is a great action director. I wish he was doing Avengers instead of this.

chances of actually getting an asian lead?

not holding my breathe lol

character's name is Keiji Kiriya

The best you can hope for is a white actor who looks asian or white mixed with asian.

Hopefully they'll get a better actor than that kid from the Last Airbender.

well never mind just read script review guys name is now billy cage lol

expect him to not be Asian lol

Isn't this similar to Gantz? Gantz would've made a better Hollywood movie adaptation IMO.

They'll need to change the title though, it screams internet meme.

Slightly off-topic but I think sticking with "Gantz" would work though. Do you know about the Japanese live-action movie coming out this Nov?

Back on topic, I'd be interested in seeing this. I was sold the moment I read "***** of War".:awesome:

I hope that there was some revisions, but this review says it's decent but it's not worthy of the prince range that the writer got for the gig. In the draft reviewed, the girl is not the Beech of War but rather...THE FULL METAL BEE-ACH. HAHA.

I can't comment too much on the project since I don't know enough about it, but the review says it feels like a video game. In a bad way.

the title is so contrived. All you need is Kill.......Kill...Kill...Kill.

Warner Bros. Want Brad Pitt For ‘All You Need Is Kill’

An adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel—and sounding not unlike “Source Code”—the story follows a soldier in an alien war who finds himself living his last day in battle over and over again after being caught in a time loop, becoming a better soldier along the way. Warner Bros. want Brad Pitt to take the lead role in the film, re-teaming with the actor with his “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” director, especially now that they have a script from Dante Harper (”Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”) that apparently resolves some third act issues it had. We can see why WB want to move on this project—they shelled out seven figures for the rights and you don’t want something like that languishing on a shelf—but everybody wants Brad Pitt and as usual he’s been linked to about a zillion over projects in the past little while.

This might be interesting to see,as it's a soldier improving on an outcome of an alien battle.

Good director.
Interesting premise (But then again, I'm a sucker for alien films).
Terrible title.

And I'm sorry, but Brad Pitt doesn't feel right to me. He's in his fifties, and I'm supposed to buy him as a recruit?

Yes not in his 50's but he getting close to it.

But the dude is aging pretty gracefully because he doesn't look 47 at all. But they'll have to rework the script.

Tom Cruise In We Are Mortals
Warner Bros. is in search of a major star to topline their adaptation of All You Need Is Kill, now going by the title We Are Mortals. The studio first wanted Brad Pitt, a natural choice since his Mr. and Mrs. Smith director Doug Liman is the man in charge of Mortals. Pitt must not have jumped at the chance to reunite with Liman, because according to THR, Warner Bros. is in talks with Tom Cruise for the starring role. The news is briefly mentioned in one of those “Tom Cruise Is Back!” features the trades are fond of. (It’s worth a read if you can stomach revelations like, “[Cruise is] working cheaper at times—sources say he’s getting just $5 million for Ages.” In other words: not worth a read.)
The premise of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel is an eye-catcher: “A young Army recruit who, despite being killed in the first day of intergalactic alien invasion of Earth, is continually resurrected Groundhog Day–style to the day before he was killed.”

collider suggests pitt and now crusie were likely the platoon leader Ferrell Bartolome who is described as An overly fitness-conscious man who takes care of his subordinates

unless they altered the script so who knows

I doubt he'll be interested in this with Horizons already on his plate. Careful with the young stuff Boom, you'll end up with Lautner or Pattinson.
