It is Burton's masterpiece. It takes all Burton's themes and trademarks and elevates them to the highest level.

I'd say Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas are equally his masterpiece.

Bring me to tears nearly every time.
But he didn't direct The Nightmare Before Christmas. You have to give equal credit to Henry Selick.
I would give Johnny Depp and Danny Elfman credit for that.
I give Selick as well as Danny Elfman credit, but Burton was very much involved with the film. The film is his baby. He developed the project while working at Disney during the early `80s. It took him 10 years to finally get it greenlit. And, the only reason it got greenlit was because of the success of Batman.
Oh, of course Burton was heavily involved. You only need to see a second of the movie to know that. But the fact remains that he was not the director.
So, just cause he didn't direct it can't count as a Burton masterpiece. The man wrote, produced, designed characters, and helped Elfman with the music. This film was his baby and I think it should count as a Burton masterpiece.

It's not the ultimate Burton masterpiece because he didn't direct the damn thing.
It IS a Burton masterpiece
but not like Eddy Scissorhands.
Plus, you could say that Burton has the same input on Edward Scissorhands as he did on TNBC, with the addition of his direction.

4/4 Stars: One of Tim Burton's masterpieces
And Nightmare before X-Mas is definitely a BURTON masterpiece. He created it before it was even on film. It has his signature all over it. It's called "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" for a reason. It's a Tim Burton film, he just didn't direct it.
'Just' didn't direct it.
Err....What are you getting it?
