Mystery/Thriller Elementary - CBS's Modern Take on Sherlock

It's too bad. They could have tried a new angle. Heck, do a modern young Sherlock Holmes. Imagine what a college age Sherlock Holmes would have been like. Heck, imagine trying to dorm with him. That would be hell.
Spielberg produced YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES 25 or so years ago....it wasn't a modern setting, but a teenage Holmes....

I'd prefer Sherlock Holmes in the Old West. That would at least make sense, given the time period the character existed in (late 19th century).

Well, the only interesting thing now is to see how they Americanize it.

Yeah I know, but it would still be more original to take that idea and put it in the modern day then simply copying Sherlock.

Still, it is what it is. If it's good, I'll probably still watch it, but it is rather annoying. Like I said before, I'd rather CBS cut a deal with BBC and help fund Sherlock so they could produce more episodes of it.

So it takes place in NY. But will Holmes be American? Ironic if JLM (who is British) has to affect an American accent for a character who's originally British. :woot:

Doesn't this show already exist on CBS? It's called The Mentalist.

Which would turn this series into "House" if he became a detective.

I say let Miller keep his accent.

Well, wasn't House a modern take on Sherlock, albeit in a medical setting? I'm not really sold on this series yet.

No one loves to crap on CBS more than I do (though my hatred has lessened since they brought Hawaii Five-0 and Person of Interest into my life), but I'm going to at least give this a shot, if it goes to air. If the pilot doesn't impress me, then yeah, I'm probably out. But I'm not going to write it off just because there happens to already be a fantastic modern Sherlock.

House is based on Sherlock already anyway although that show is coming to a end.
Yeah, to be honest I'm fairly annoyed CBS is so blatantly ripping off Sherlock. And to be honest, I really doubt this TV show will be as good as Sherlock, because that TV series is one of the best I've seen in a long time. I'll probably still catch a few episodes of this, because I love Holmes as a character, but it's just annoying.

I would have much preferred it had CBS struck a deal with BBC so they could air Sherlock, and possibly pitch in to produce more episodes. And honestly, we already have an American Sherlock. It's call House.
Thats kind of what happened.

CBS went to the BBC and asked if they could remake their version on Sherlock and the BBC said no because the UK version already airs on PBS in the states.

You Should check out the "HOLMES ON THE RANGE" series of books by
Steven Hockensmith.
Its not Holmes out west but features two cowboy brothers who read
about Holmes and decided to deploy the great detective methods to the
mysteries they find on the frontier.
Very good reading.

It being Americanized is fine. The blatant copying of Sherlock is what annoys me. I enjoy seeing new spins on Holmes. I love House, I love the RDJ interpretation, I loved Monk (more inspired by Holmes then a direct interpretation), but this is quite clearly copying Sherlock because Sherlock is doing well. And it is somewhat annoying. Especially since I have very little faith it can do the Modern Holmes interpretation as well as Sherlock.

So basically, why would I want to watch a show with the same concept as another, if there's already a show that's currently running that will probably be better?

Now, if they decide to add their own element to it, that's fine. I personally hope that they try something different from Sherlock.

I understand your concern. And since we've seen nothing of it, give it a chance first. Who knows, there could be something very cool here that we haven't seen before. The NYC setting is one of them. I do hope they make it so that it stands on its own as well. The BBC version is popular over there and is having success. CBS sees this potential so they are making it Americanized and broadening out the concept. Sounds pretty natural of a network or studio to do so. I wish they would strike a deal with BBC too, but let's give this a chance first. Perhaps it just works better as a three episode season. The two main actors are pretty busy in the film world anyway. Making it a fully fledged tv show would complicate their schedules.

But the problem is that people are dismissing this because they for some reason have all the answers and that this will suck.

Oh, I'll give it a chance. But honestly, I wouldn't say BBC is broadening the concept, they're copying because it's obviously popular. They're far the first to do this though. It's literally been happening since TV has become popular. Lassie's popular? Let's make her a dolphin. Call it Skipper. People like Law and Order? Make five of them. CSI? Let's do five versions of that too. It's the nature of the thing.

I'm a fan of the Sherlock character. I have since I read Hound of the Baskervilles as a kid (and then most of the other stories) So I'll check this show out. However, what would be annoying to me is if this show pretty much all out copies Sherlock, but is a mediocre version. And a mediocre version would still be good enough to run for a long while. And then we'd have a Sherlock tv series that would be more popular then the BBC version when it's just a less quality knock-off.

I'm not saying that will happen, but it's what I'm afraid will happen. And that would be all kinds of frustrating. But if it's good and shows us another interpretation of Sherlock in it's own way, then I'll be okay with it.

All joking aside, who would you guys like to see cast as Watson? Moriarty?

If you thought you hated this idea before......

TV Line:
Scoop: Lucy Liu Cast as Watson in CBS' Modern Day Sherlock Holmes Pilot Elementary

Further proof that CBS’ in-the-works Sherlock Holmes reboot will take the iconic franchise in a radical new direction: The network has cast Lucy Liu as Watson!

TVLine has learned that Liu has been tapped to play Watson to Jonny Lee Miller‘s Sherlock in Elementary, the network’s modern-day take on the famed detective saga.

Another key change: Sherlock and Watson now live in New York City.

Rob Doherty (Medium) penned the script and Michael Cuesta (Homeland) will direct the pilot. Both will serve as EPs alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.

Liu is currently in the midst of a season-long arc on Southland.

I... This... B-but...

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, **** this show!

You know that, if this goes forward, Holmes and Watson are gonna end up ****ing. :csad:

Good lord....

Yikes, I know. Also, her name'll be Joanne or something.

I was always against this idea, but until this news I still probably woulda checked out the pilot but now? Nah, thanks but I'm done with this.

If they had changed ethnicity and kept Watson male, I wouldn't be too put off. But they just had to change ethnicity and gender, didn't they?

That sucks. I really like Lucy in Southland.

As for her as Watson...eh...I mean its...something I guess? Im planning to watch the show so I hope she does a good job.

Is this the biggest departure ever in a Sherlock Holmes adaptation? I think it is but Im not as well versed in Sherlock Holmes adaptations.

I don't see the problem. People were ****ing and moaning about Elementary being close to Sherlock. This casting news set this show apart from that. Gender changes have been done before on remakes/reimaginings/whatever this show is considered. Look at Hawaii Five-O...

What about BattleStar Galactica? Now there was some serious fan outrage...

It would be like Luke Skywalker being a woman

I'm sure this casting of Liu will add

Sex appeal

Sexual Tension

They're probably worried two guys wouldn't be enough to bring in demographics.

Its certainly interesting...I just hope this doesnt lead to S/W getting romantically involved with one another. If this show gets picked up for series and manages to be a hit, I will respect them all the more if they never go down that route.

Thats why you add whats her name, Sherlocks main girl who loves to do wrong things to the main cast.

Interesting, by making her female all the bromantic tension built up over decades between these can actually be acted upon now. I like Lucy Liu but not sure about this. It could be inventive but also fall flat on its face.
