I thought F Murray Abrahams might've been Moriarty. He would've been a decent choice for the role. Better not be someone too young but older to give him more gravitas.

I also enjoy Elementary and think its nothing special.

I think my problem is though, the show is spread thin with so many episodes. I think Holmes should be involved with some really bizarre and hard to solve cases. Most of these cases seem pretty open and shut that even the less intellectual NYPD detectives could solve easily.

I agree with this. I wish they would do more multiple episode cases to get a really complex case in there. As you say, many of these cases leave me wondering why the NYPD need to consult with Holmes at all.

I actually prefer the episodes where the NYPD barely feature, like this week's one. It makes it less of a standard procedural show and more in line with the Holmes mythology.

Yep. And it's nice because this is a case that's been stretched out over episodes.

That's the one thing I really prefer with Sherlock's format. The shorter number of episodes but longer run time allow for the writers to come up with some very complex mysteries. Elementary could do that, they would just have to be okay with extending some mysteries over a few episodes. And I honestly think that would be a cool thing to do. It would allow them to really show off Sherlock's genius a bit more. Something they haven't really done all that much thus far, compared to other Sherlocks.

I also like it a lot better now that Watson is Holmes's assistant and detective in training. The show suddenly felt like it had a needed injection when that happened. The episode where Joan tried to solve that case on her own was more interesting than some of what had gone before.

I didn't really like the whole sober companion thing going on so long, but I guess it wouldn't have been realistic for him to just recover quickly either.

Finale just aired. I loved it.

I especially liked how they planted clues as to Moriarty's identity and Holme's eventual strategy in the first part only to execute the endgame effectively in part two. Anybody else catch how the first part hinted at Moriarty's identity with the publicly displayed stolen masterpiece that Holmes observed in the first flashback? Or how once Holmes realized which of his weaknesses Moriarty was exploiting, he then turned around and used the same tactics to catch Moriarty?

And Moriarty's still alive, so we probably still have a Final Problem style plotline coming up.

I liked the finale a lot I didn't expect the Irene is Moriarty plot. The twist wasn't surprising I would say but definatley unexpected only because to my knowledge M has always been a man. It was a brilliant ploy by M to satisfy his curiosity for of Sherlock by sleeping with him.

Definitely didn't expect that. Also didn't expect them to not have a cliffhanger to close out the season. I do expect Moriarty/Adler to come back in some way next season. Lucy Liu did say they'd be filming in London next year so it'll be interesting to see what they do there.

I really loved the twist. At the first half hour or so, I was getting pissed at how boring they'd made Irene and how they just made her a straight up love interest. Then they proved me wrong.

Well that was certainly an unexpected twist. In a way though i would've preferred they kept them two separate characters and that we didn't meet Moriarty until later. I thought at first that Irene was a double because the birth mark on her back wasn't there and that maybe the real Irene was actually dead and M was using this double to mess with Sherlock's head. Didn't expect Irene to be M.

Was also hoping for a cliffhanger ending. They had several opportunities to do so like when Holmes OD'd or when Moriarty revealed herself. Didn't expect her to get caught so quickly. But overall a good finale.

Totally did not see that coming. Going into the finale I had the typical Sherlock fan way of thinking. Moriarty reveal, which male actor they got, Napoleon of crime, etc. Then WHAM! That twist. Probably the twists of twists. But really, Watson as a female, the setting in NY...it was obvious this was going to be different in some capacity.

At first I was in "meh" mode. But thinking about it as the finale went on I ended being ok with it. Making M a woman and using the name Irene Idler as a cover is something literally no one ever thought of. And that's what made it great in a way. Plus it makes the relationship between Sherlock and M much more personal as Sherlock was so emotionally invested in "Irene".

Enjoyed it, can't wait for season two.

I agree making M a female was brilliant it makes their relationship so much more interesting. It makes more sense why M didn't give Sherlock that hot shot not because of him being a worthy adversary but because she loves him. What's great about love between two characters like this is you don't know hate til you hate someone you love. That is true hate that burns like a inferno in your gut that can not be extinquished. M is going to hurt him in so many ways can't wait to see what happens. I also hope this isn't the end of their intimate relationship I'd like to see them have love hate relationship mostly hate.

They couldn't do that though, because we've already seen Watson in her own time with her family or therapist, and she's still the same person with the same worries and concerns. It would have to be Irene, because we don't know what she's been like off screen where she drops the persona.

And yes, it does make it more personal and would also explain why it wasn't Sebastian Moran who "killed" her but Moriarty personally. Here M has done more damage to Holmes than in possibly any other incarnation because not only has he had sex and fallen in love with M, but then has thought that she (as Irene) has been dead for the past year and has been wracked with guilt and sent spiralling into depression and heroin addiction.

I wonder if Moriarty will be her real name. Could she be an actual professor (maybe a university professor in England - eg Oxford)? And if it is her real name, maybe her first name is Jaime instead of James? But then Moriarity could be the alias and Irene Adler could be the real name. Or neither of them. Who knows?

I totally hated the twist. Using a comic book example, it was like making Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin the same person, WTF. So now both Watson and Moriarty are women...
